Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA docking station’s control dial has no universal job. Depending on the model, it may change system volume, launch shortcuts, navigate the dock’s own status screen, adjust a setting such as screen brightness, or control an audio application. Before buying, identify exactly what the dial changes, which operating systems support it, how displays and bandwidth are handled, and whether a power adapter is included.
What is a control dial on a docking station?
A control dial is a physical rotary input built into a dock or dock-like control surface. Turning it sends commands to the dock, the host computer, or supported software; pressing it may select an option or trigger a second action. The word “dial” describes the hardware, not a guaranteed feature.

Two docks that look similar can therefore behave very differently. One may act like a desktop volume knob, another may expose port information on a small display, and a third may control a software mixer. Basic USB, video, networking and charging functions can continue to work even when the dial’s advanced features are unavailable, but that depends on the design.

System volume and media control
Some consumer docks map the dial to the computer’s audio volume. Turning it raises or lowers the selected output level; pressing it may mute or unmute. A manufacturer can also assign the press or nearby buttons to play, pause, skip, or other media commands. This is convenient when the dock sits beside a keyboard, but it is not proof that the dial changes the monitor’s built-in amplifier or the volume inside every application.

Programmable shortcuts
A dial can be part of a configurable shortcut system rather than a fixed volume control. TechRadar’s review of the TobenONE UDS060 11-in-1 USB-C docking station describes four programmable shortcut keys and a rotary volume knob with a press function. With the companion TobenONE software, controls can be assigned to launch applications, take screenshots, control media, mute audio, or send key combinations.
That flexibility is useful if you repeatedly perform the same desktop action. It also creates a compatibility dependency: the dock must be recognized by the companion software, and the software must support your operating system. The UDS060’s basic docking functions do not require the software, but the review reports that customization is Windows-only. A Mac can still use the dock’s ordinary ports while losing the programmable layer.
Dock status and settings navigation
Some dials operate the dock itself. The Anker Prime dock manual describes turning its knob to inspect port details and move through settings, including screen-brightness and screen-saver options on the dock’s display. In this design, the dial is a navigation control for device information, not necessarily a global computer-volume wheel.
A status-oriented dial is valuable when the dock exposes temperatures, connection states, power information or display settings without requiring an application. It may have little effect on the operating system once you leave the dock’s menu. Read the manual’s control map instead of inferring behavior from the shape of the knob.
Application-specific audio control
Professional control surfaces can assign a dial to a particular audio application. Avid’s Dock guide says its Control Room/Monitor encoder defaults to Control Room level and uses a SHIFT function for Monitor level in supported applications. The assignment can be changed in EuControl settings.
This is a different category from a general laptop dock. The encoder’s behavior depends on the application, its integration, the active control-room configuration and the software settings. It should be evaluated as part of an audio-production workflow, not as evidence that an ordinary USB-C dock will control every monitor or conferencing app.
Dial functions that are often confused
| What you want to change | What the dial may actually change | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Computer speaker or headset volume | Operating-system volume commands | Which output device is selected and whether mute is supported |
| Monitor speaker volume | Software volume, monitor controls, or nothing | Whether audio travels through the monitor and whether the monitor accepts the command |
| Monitor brightness | Dock-menu setting, software slider, or DDC command | Monitor DDC support, connection path and visible brightness change |
| Dock information | Port, power, display or firmware menu navigation | Which screens the dial can open and whether pressing selects an item |
| Audio-production level | Control Room, Monitor or another software-defined bus | Supported application, integration and remapping settings |
| Repeated desktop tasks | Programmable shortcuts or key combinations | Companion software, operating-system support and profile behavior |
A slider moving on screen is not sufficient evidence that hardware changed. The signal path, selected output and monitor electronics determine the result.

What to check before buying a dock with a dial
1. Define the exact action
Write down the result you expect: “turning the dial changes Windows volume,” “pressing the dial mutes,” “the dial opens port status,” or “the dial controls a supported mixer.” Then match that statement to the manufacturer’s manual or control list.
- Look for separate descriptions of turn, press, and modifier-button actions.
- Check whether the control is fixed or programmable.
- Confirm whether profiles can be saved for different applications.
- Check what happens when the companion utility is not running.
“Rotary knob” by itself does not establish any of these behaviors.
2. Check software and operating-system support
Advanced controls frequently require a utility, driver or integration service. The UDS060 review reports that its programmable shortcuts and knob customization require TobenONE software and that this customization is Windows-only. That means a Mac user should not assume that a USB-C connection makes the same dial features available.
Separate the requirements into two rows when comparing products:
Recommended Free Tools
| Function | Possible requirement | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Basic docking | Standard USB-C display and USB support | Will the host enumerate the dock’s ports without extra software? |
| Dial customization | Vendor utility or driver | Does the utility support this operating-system version? |
| Application control | Integration such as EuControl | Is the intended application explicitly supported? |
| Firmware or menu features | Dock firmware and on-device interface | Can settings be accessed without a computer utility? |
Confirm current software availability and operating-system support before purchase; utilities and firmware can change after a product review.
3. Match the host port to the display requirement
Display capability is determined by the host computer, the dock, the cable and the operating system together. The UDS060 coverage says two independent 4K displays at 60 Hz require a compatible Windows laptop with DisplayPort 1.4 Multi-Stream Transport (MST). The same coverage reports mirrored output across two external HDMI displays on macOS.
Do not treat “two HDMI ports” as a promise of two independent desktops. Check:

- The host computer’s USB-C or Thunderbolt port mode and DisplayPort capabilities.
- Whether the dock requires DisplayPort 1.4 MST, a driver, or another display technology.
- The maximum resolution and refresh rate for each output when other outputs are active.
- The operating system’s rules for extending versus mirroring displays.
- Whether the laptop maker limits external displays on that particular model.
Use the vendor’s current compatibility chart for the exact laptop model. A port that physically fits is not enough.
4. Calculate bandwidth for simultaneous devices
The reviewed UDS060 shares up to a 10Gbps host connection across its ports. Its review reports USB ports rated up to 5Gbps, with potentially lower performance when multiple ports are in use. Those are dock limits, not guarantees that every connected device receives the headline rate.
For a realistic workload, list every high-throughput device you will use at once: external SSD, webcam, audio interface, card reader and network adapter. The host link and the dock’s internal hub must carry their traffic together. A USB4 or Thunderbolt host does not automatically raise the dock’s own port limits.
- For occasional keyboard, mouse and printer use, shared bandwidth is usually less significant.
- For simultaneous storage transfers and video capture, leave headroom and check independent controller specifications.
- Expect measured throughput to vary with protocol overhead, cable quality and other active ports.
5. Confirm the power supply arrangement
TechRadar reports that the UDS060 does not include a power supply or power adapter. If the dock is expected to charge a laptop or run several bus-powered peripherals, determine whether you already own a suitable adapter and whether its output meets the dock’s requirements.
Check three separate power questions:
- Is an adapter included in the box?
- How much power can the dock deliver to the host computer?
- How much power remains for attached USB devices after host charging?
A dock that works from the laptop’s USB-C power may still be unsuitable for a setup that needs reliable laptop charging and multiple peripherals.
6. Treat brightness and volume as separate compatibility tests
BetterDisplay’s guide explains that monitor control depends on the monitor, Display Data Channel (DDC) support, the audio path and the dock. A dock dial or an on-screen slider may send a command without producing a visible or audible change.
For brightness, verify that the monitor supports the required DDC commands through the chosen connection. For volume, identify whether sound is produced by the monitor, a headset connected to the dock, the laptop, or another output. The same dial may affect one path and not another.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
When possible, compare the display connected directly to the computer with the same display connected through the dock. Change the setting, observe the screen’s actual brightness, and listen for the actual volume change. Do not use the presence of a slider as the test result.
How to evaluate a dock dial before committing
- Write the required outcome. Specify the device and function: system volume, monitor volume, brightness, dock menu, shortcut or application level.
- Download or read the control documentation. Find the turn, press and modifier assignments, not just the product photograph.
- Separate fixed functions from programmable ones. Note whether customization requires a utility, driver, profile or application integration.
- Verify your operating system. Check the exact version and whether the advanced controls, not merely the ports, are supported.
- Map your display setup. Record the number of screens, resolution, refresh rate and whether you need independent desktops or mirroring.
- Check the host port. Confirm DisplayPort capability, MST requirements and any laptop-specific display limits.
- Inventory bandwidth-heavy devices. Add storage, cameras, interfaces and network adapters that will operate simultaneously.
- Confirm power equipment. Check the included contents, required adapter and host-charging target.
- Validate the signal path. For brightness and volume, identify the actual monitor and audio endpoint and confirm support for the relevant commands.
- Read current compatibility information. Product listings, utilities, firmware and support matrices can change; verify them immediately before buying.
Product examples: similar-looking dials, different purposes
| Example | Dial role | Important limitation or dependency |
|---|---|---|
| TobenONE UDS060 11-in-1 USB-C docking station | Rotary volume knob with press function plus four programmable shortcut keys | Customization requires TobenONE software and is reported as Windows-only; basic docking works without it |
| Anker Prime dock | On-device status and settings navigation, including screen-brightness and screen-saver options described in its manual | The knob’s menu function should not be assumed to be a general computer-volume control |
| Avid Dock control surface | Control Room/Monitor encoder for supported audio applications | Default assignment and SHIFT behavior depend on supported software; mapping can be changed in EuControl |
These examples illustrate categories rather than a universal standard. A consumer dock, a display-equipped desktop dock and a professional audio surface can all advertise a “dial” while exposing entirely different commands.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every knob is a volume control
Read the control table and manual. A knob may navigate status pages or send application commands instead. If system volume is essential, look for explicit operating-system volume support and a mute action.
Assuming macOS and Windows behave alike
Port compatibility does not imply utility compatibility. The UDS060 example retains basic docking on systems where its Windows customization is unavailable, so evaluate the dial and the ports independently.
Confusing mirrored displays with extended desktops
Two outputs can show the same image while failing to provide two independent workspaces. Check host DisplayPort capabilities, MST requirements and the operating system’s display mode before buying.
Reading the fastest port label as a guaranteed throughput
A 10Gbps host connection and 5Gbps USB ports are shared resources in the reviewed UDS060. Multiple active devices can reduce the bandwidth available to each one.

Forgetting the adapter
A missing power supply can turn a planned single-cable desk into a setup that cannot charge the laptop or power peripherals reliably. Confirm box contents and budget for a suitable adapter if needed.

Trusting a software slider instead of the hardware result
Brightness and volume commands can be blocked or redirected by the monitor, DDC support, audio endpoint or dock. Test the actual visible brightness and audible output through the intended path.
Troubleshooting a dial that does not work
The dial does nothing
- Check whether the dock utility or required integration is installed and running.
- Confirm that your operating system is supported for the advanced control.
- Reconnect the dock directly to the host and remove adapters that may interrupt its data connection.
- Test the dial in the documented default mode before trying a custom assignment.
Turning works but pressing does not
Turn and press may be separate commands. Review the manual for a press action, mute behavior or modifier requirement. In a programmable design, restore the default profile and assign the press function again.
The dial changes the wrong level
Identify the selected operating-system output and the physical audio endpoint. A dock may be changing laptop or headset volume while the monitor’s own speakers remain unchanged. In a professional application, check the active Control Room or Monitor assignment and any SHIFT state.
Brightness appears to change on screen but the monitor does not
Check DDC support, cable path and monitor input. Compare a direct connection with the dock connection and judge the result by the panel’s actual luminance, not the slider position.
One of two displays is mirrored or absent
Verify the host’s DisplayPort version and MST support, the dock’s required mode, cable ratings and the operating system’s display settings. On macOS, the UDS060 coverage reports mirroring across two external HDMI displays rather than two independent outputs.
Storage or camera performance falls when more devices are connected
Shared host and hub bandwidth may be saturated. Disconnect lower-priority devices, move a high-throughput device to another host port, and check whether the dock’s rated limits match the workload.
A practical decision framework
Choose a dial-first dock when
- You regularly adjust the same system-level control and want a physical input.
- You will use the supported operating system and companion utility.
- The dock’s display and port requirements match your laptop and monitors.
- You have confirmed power and bandwidth for every simultaneous device.
Choose a simpler dock when
- You only need ports, charging and display output.
- Your operating system cannot use the dial’s customization software.
- The dial controls a function you do not use, such as an on-device status menu.
- Your display or audio path cannot respond to the command you expect.
A physical control is worthwhile only when it changes the thing you intend, on the computer and devices you actually own. Treat the dial as one feature in a compatibility system, not as a guarantee of desktop volume or monitor control.
