Yes—AI can estimate the first impressions people tend to form from a face, and it can alter an image to shift those impressions. But the model described in a 2022 PNAS study does not reveal someone’s real personality, competence, or character. It models shared human judgments, including stereotypes.
What the researchers built
The study, “Deep models of superficial face judgments,” combined deep generative image models with crowdsourced ratings. Its One Million Impressions dataset contains 1,020,000 human judgments of 1,000 synthetic, naturalistic face stimuli across 34 attributes. The attributes ranged from age and adiposity to trustworthiness, masculine or feminine appearance, and familiarity. The paper was published online in PNAS on April 21, 2022.

By learning how face representations relate to average ratings, the system can predict the impressions observers are likely to report, generate synthetic faces along modeled attribute dimensions, and modify a face image to raise or lower a perceived attribute. It is a model of observers’ responses—not a test that discovers whether the person pictured is trustworthy, familiar, competent, or anything else.

The phrase does not mean the researchers set out to build a discriminatory decision system. It refers to the dataset reflecting biases present in human judgments. Coauthor Joshua Peterson put it this way: “Our dataset not only contains bias, it deliberately reflects it,” as quoted in Futurism’s April 25, 2022 coverage.

That distinction matters because ratings such as trustworthiness are impressions, not objective properties visible in a face. The paper explicitly cautions that subjective and socially constructed inferences need not correspond to a person’s actual identity, attitudes, or competencies. An AI trained to reproduce those judgments can reproduce the stereotypes behind them, too.
How well did the model work?
The paper reports predictive accuracy approaching human interrater reliability: the level of agreement among people rating the same faces. The authors also tested image manipulation in 20 preregistered experiments involving more than 1,000 participants. In general, the edits shifted observers’ ratings in the intended direction. The reported significant positive linear trend had an exception: familiarity ratings for real faces.

These results show that the system could influence reported impressions under the study’s experimental conditions. They do not show that the edits changed the people depicted, or that every modeled attribute shifted reliably in every setting.
Whose impressions does the model represent?
The authors describe the judgments as systematic biases and stereotypes shared by raters, and say the model represents impressions in a general, mostly White North American population. That is an important boundary on claims about how “people” judge faces worldwide.

The paper also notes that Black faces may have been undersampled among the stimuli and that model performance and rating reliability differed for some racial or ethnic attributes. The authors caution that the available evidence does not establish why. The study therefore should not be treated as a universal account of face perception or as equally reliable across groups.

Conventional image manipulation can put someone into a different scene or context. This method instead targets the impressions people form from features within the face itself. The authors warn that automated edits could make targeted manipulation faster and more effective, and that subtle changes may be difficult to detect. An altered image could consequently boost or damage someone’s reputation without viewers realizing why their impression changed.

The concern is about manipulating perception, not uncovering a hidden truth about a person. Cognitive scientist and AI researcher Jordan W. Suchow warned that “we need to be careful about how this technology is used,” according to Futurism’s report. The PNAS authors argue that methods, implementations, and supporting data “should be made transparent from the start” to help develop detection and defense protocols.

What to take from the study
- The model predicts aggregated human impressions from facial images; it does not diagnose an individual’s real character or abilities.
- Its ratings encode social judgments and stereotypes, and its described population is mostly White and North American.
- Experiments found that model-based edits generally shifted impressions in the intended direction, with the stated exception for familiarity ratings of real faces.
- Because subtle changes may be hard to notice, transparency and safeguards matter when such tools are used.
