A cockatoo using a touch-screen speech board demonstrates a constraint that applies just as strongly to artificial intelligence: a system can reason only over the signals its interface and data pipeline allow it to capture. Ellie’s selections were meaningful evidence of intentional communication under tested conditions, but the tablet also defined which words, outcomes, and records could exist. AI systems face the same boundary: information excluded during collection cannot be reliably recovered by a reviewer at the end.
What Ellie’s speech board actually showed
A three-month, single-bird study
Cunha, Renguette, Stella, and Mancini’s 2024 paper in the ACM Interaction Design and Children community examined Ellie, one Goffin’s cockatoo. The team analyzed more than 2,600 speech-board selections gathered over three months. The dataset included 477 persistence trials, in which a requested outcome was not provided; 30 trials in which menu representations were randomly rearranged; and nine trials in which researchers deliberately supplied an unwanted or different item or activity.

Ellie used a touch interface containing more than 200 representations. Through positive-reinforcement training, she learned associations between representations and outcomes. Menus could include foods, toys, people, activities, perceptions, emotions, and action or preference terms. Selecting items in sequence could produce simple utterances, with the system speaking the associated words.
Persistence and changed outcomes
The strongest evidence was not that Ellie touched symbols, but how her behavior changed when the expected result changed. She continued seeking requested outcomes when they were withheld and responded differently when researchers delivered the wrong item or activity. In the randomized-menu task, she selected “sunflower seed” in 20 of 30 trials and corroborated 76.6% of the selections. The paper also reports a 92% corroboration rate for fulfilled selections in the analyzed dataset.

Those figures describe performance within particular tasks and definitions of corroboration; they are not a general accuracy score for cockatoo communication. The authors concluded that Ellie’s interactions aligned with recognized linguistic and biological communication functions and indicated intentional communication.
What the result does not prove
This was a single-animal case study, not evidence that cockatoos generally use human language. Ellie’s training history, living environment, caregivers, vocabulary, and repeated experience with the interface all shaped the observations. The findings support intentional, functional use of this speech board under the tested conditions. They do not establish human-like semantics, unrestricted conversation, or generalization to other birds.
The paper also notes that Ellie could choose only from menus and destination options created for her. A different vocabulary, layout, or interaction method could have produced different selections. That qualification is central rather than incidental: the measurement system helped determine what counted as observable evidence.

How an interface determines what an AI can know
AI systems do not inspect reality directly. They operate on representations such as database fields, sensor readings, documents, labels, images, and interface events. Every stage before model inference can remove information.

A human reviewer added at the end of an AI workflow cannot necessarily recover evidence that was filtered out at the beginning. For example, a support form that offers only preset reasons may make unusual failures invisible; a sensor system that stores averages but not spikes cannot later reconstruct an individual event; and a moderation pipeline that discards uncertain cases leaves no record for a model to reconsider. The model may be accurate relative to its inputs while still missing the situation that matters.
Can a cockatoo communicate with a tablet?
Yes, a cockatoo can learn to use a tablet-based speech-board interface when symbols are associated with outcomes through training. In Ellie’s case, the tablet was the host for a deliberately designed communication system, not a magic translator. The device presented choices, spoke associated words, and recorded selections; caregivers supplied the training and interpreted outcomes.

- Whether the app supports a vocabulary and menu structure appropriate for the individual bird.
- Whether the screen, enclosure, mounting position, and touch sensitivity are safe and usable for a beak or foot.
- Whether selections can be logged with timestamps and the resulting item or activity, so requests can be checked rather than guessed.
- Whether training uses positive reinforcement and allows the bird to stop, rather than treating interaction as a performance obligation.
- Whether caregivers can distinguish a deliberate selection from exploratory touches, accidental contact, or a response to the device’s layout.
The goal should be compatible communication and welfare-aware enrichment. A speech board can expand opportunities for choice and observation, but it should not be presented as proof that a bird has acquired human language.
What vocal-learning evidence adds
A separate 2021 PLOS ONE study examined three male cockatiels exposed to a human-whistled melody. The birds learned to imitate a 22-note sequence. Two produced singing that synchronized with playback under the study’s recording conditions. Researchers exposed the birds to the sequence up to 30 times per day and recorded playback and bird vocalizations on separate channels.

The imitation developed gradually. By fewer than 220 days post-hatch, human observers could recognize the vocalizations as imitations of the model melody. The experiment used hand-raised birds and one specific whistle stimulus, so it should not be generalized to all cockatoos, cockatiels, or parrots.
A comparative review also notes that vocal-learning research is heavily weighted toward oscine songbirds, even though extensive vocal-learning abilities are documented in parrots and cockatoos. Vocal imitation demonstrates learning and control of sound; it does not, by itself, demonstrate human-like words, grammar, or unrestricted meaning.

The cockatoo example provides a practical evaluation sequence for any AI workflow.

- Inventory admitted signals. List every field, event, document type, sensor channel, and user action the system can receive. Mark information that is blocked by the interface, omitted from logs, compressed into summaries, or discarded as “unknown.”
- Inspect the representation choices. Record who created the labels, categories, menus, thresholds, and defaults. Ask which legitimate states have no representation and which categories force different situations into one bucket.
- Separate selection from outcome. Store what a user or model selected and what actually happened. Without the outcome, a high selection rate can reflect habit, interface bias, or chance rather than a successful decision.
- Test changed and missing outcomes. Include delayed fulfillment, rejected requests, substitutions, and deliberately altered results. Observe whether users or downstream systems persist, revise, or abandon their original signal.
- Check reproducibility. Repeat the evaluation with different users, sites, devices, and operating conditions. A result confined to one trained workflow should be labeled that way.
- Preserve uncertainty and raw events. Keep the original timestamped signal alongside any cleaned label or summary. Future reviewers cannot recover distinctions that preprocessing erased.
The limits of the analogy
Ellie is not an AI model, and a speech board is not a data warehouse. The comparison is about evidence architecture: both cases involve an observer acting through a designed interface, with interpretation constrained by the available representations and records. Animal behavior also includes motivation, learning history, social relationships, and welfare considerations that do not map neatly onto software metrics.
For that reason, the responsible conclusion is narrow. Ellie’s study supports intentional communication through one tested interface, while the cockatiel study supports vocal imitation under specific exposure and recording conditions. Together they show why the design of a measurement system must be treated as part of the claim—not as a neutral window onto reality.
