Short answer: A ChatGPT Dot is software inside ChatGPT, not a separately described physical listening gadget. It can use a connected computer’s microphone, camera, or screen only after you connect that computer and grant the ChatGPT app the matching operating-system permissions. A Dot can receive ChatGPT memories and recent conversation context, and conversations with it can add information to ChatGPT Memory. Turning Memory off stops future sharing but does not erase context already transferred. Deleting the Dot removes its own context, while files, conversations, Codex threads, and ChatGPT memories can remain in separate locations.
The privacy question therefore has three parts: what the Dot is allowed to access, what it keeps in its own context, and what is stored or controlled elsewhere in ChatGPT. The controls for those layers are different.

What a ChatGPT Dot actually is
OpenAI describes a Dot as an always-on agent in ChatGPT that operates with its own cloud computer. The official descriptions do not identify a dedicated physical ChatGPT Dot device with a built-in microphone or camera. “Always-on” describes the agent’s availability and ability to work proactively within the permissions and rules you grant; it does not mean a hardware unit is silently listening in your room.

The practical privacy model is permission based. You decide whether to connect a computer, which device capabilities the ChatGPT app may use, and which services are connected through ChatGPT’s Plugins tab. Availability of particular apps and features can vary by account, region and rollout stage.
What a Dot can hear, see and access
Microphone, camera and screen
A Dot cannot use your computer’s microphone, camera or screen simply because the agent exists. OpenAI’s FAQ states that before a Dot can access those devices, you must connect the computer to the Dot. You must then grant the ChatGPT app the corresponding permission in your operating system or device settings.
That means “hear” should be read as permission-gated microphone access to a connected computer, not as proof of an independent, always-listening hardware device. If the computer is not connected, or the relevant permission is denied or revoked, that access path is unavailable.

A Dot can use apps that you choose to connect, within the permissions those services provide. Review and manage those connections in ChatGPT’s Plugins tab. Disconnecting an app prevents new access from that service, but it does not automatically remove information the Dot already incorporated into its context.
Proactive research
OpenAI says a Dot may look for useful updates in permitted connected sources and save private notes, including when you have not made a specific request about the information. This proactive research is constrained:
- It can read permitted sources and form private notes.
- It cannot directly send messages through plugins.
- It cannot change app content through plugins.
- It cannot control your browser or computer.
- A later action, such as sending an email, follows the ordinary action rules, approvals and safety checks rather than happening automatically because research found something.
These limits reduce the consequences of an over-broad connection, but they do not make a Dot infallible. It can still misunderstand information or make a mistake when carrying out an allowed task.

What a Dot can remember
Memory flows in both directions
A Dot may receive memories already held by ChatGPT and recent conversation context. The reverse also occurs: conversations with the Dot can contribute information to ChatGPT Memory. OpenAI summarizes this relationship as: “Your dot can receive memories and recent conversation context from ChatGPT, and conversations with your dot can contribute to memory in ChatGPT.”

To remove existing material, you need the deletion controls for the relevant location.
How long Dot context lasts
OpenAI says a Dot can retain conversation and plugin information for as long as you keep the Dot. The Dot’s own context can be removed by deleting the Dot. The current controls do not let you inspect, correct or delete individual Dot memories one by one.
That retention statement applies to Dot context, not every piece of data produced during a Dot session. Files, ChatGPT conversations, Codex threads and memories stored in ChatGPT are managed separately. A file created or used in ChatGPT Library, on a computer or in connected storage follows the retention policy of that storage location.
What Dot context does not retain
OpenAI’s Dot FAQ says Dot context does not retain credentials, images or screenshots. That does not mean a credential is safe to paste into a chat or upload to a plugin: passwords and other secrets shared through chat, documents or connected services can be handled under those systems’ own retention and access rules.

What “share” means in practice
Sharing with ChatGPT Memory
When Memory is enabled, information can move from ChatGPT into the Dot and from Dot conversations back into ChatGPT Memory. Disabling Memory is a forward-looking control. It halts new sharing, but it is not an eraser for information already present in Dot context or already saved as a ChatGPT memory.

Sharing with connected services
A connected app receives only what its granted integration allows, but the Dot may use that app’s permitted information while the connection remains active. If you later disconnect the service, the Dot does not retroactively forget facts it already incorporated. Treat connection removal and data deletion as two separate tasks.
Sharing for model improvement
For personal ChatGPT plans, the Improve the model for everyone setting controls whether Dot conversations and work may be used to improve models. Business, Enterprise and Edu workspace data is not used for model training by default.
Model-improvement settings do not cover every form of operational access. OpenAI says limited human review may occur in some circumstances, including safety-related cases, even when model improvement is turned off. Training use, service operation, abuse prevention and human review are distinct questions; changing one setting should not be described as disabling all of the others.

Sharing does not mean unrestricted action
Proactive research can read permitted sources and make private notes, but it cannot directly message people, alter app content through plugins or operate your browser or computer. Other follow-up actions use normal action rules and safety checks. Use approval settings and Custom Rules for tasks that could affect an account or disclose information, while remembering that safeguards lower risk rather than guaranteeing perfect behavior.
How to limit what your Dot can access
- Do not connect a computer unless you need computer-level capabilities. A Dot has no microphone, camera or screen path to that computer until you connect it.
- Grant only the device permissions required for the task. In your operating-system privacy settings, review the ChatGPT app’s camera, microphone and screen-recording or screen-sharing permissions. Revoke each permission when it is no longer needed.
- Audit connected apps. Open ChatGPT’s Plugins tab, review every authorized service and disconnect integrations you no longer use. Remember that disconnection prevents new access but does not remove already incorporated context.
- Set boundaries for actions. Use Custom Rules and available approval prompts for activities that might send information, modify an account or trigger an external action. Read the proposed action before approving it.
- Keep sensitive material out of prompts and files. Do not paste passwords, recovery codes or other secrets into Dot conversations. Device and plugin safeguards do not protect a secret that you deliberately disclose in chat or a document.
- Secure the account. OpenAI recommends enabling multi-factor authentication in account security settings. Supported website sign-ins use a secure form so credentials are not exposed to the model; that protection does not cover passwords separately shared in chats, files or plugins.
How to stop memory sharing and remove existing context
Stop future Memory sharing
Turn off Memory in ChatGPT’s settings when you do not want new Dot conversations and ChatGPT memories to continue informing one another. This changes future behavior only. Review ChatGPT Memory separately if you need to remove memories that were already saved there.
Delete the Dot’s own context
Delete or reset the Dot using the Dot-management control available in your account. This removes the Dot’s own context, including the conversation and plugin context retained for that Dot. It is not a universal deletion command.

Check other data locations
After deleting a Dot, review the places where related information may still live:
- ChatGPT Memory, using ChatGPT’s Memory controls.
- ChatGPT conversations created with or by the Dot.
- Codex threads, if the Dot created or used them.
- Files in ChatGPT Library.
- Files on a connected computer or in connected storage.
- Records retained by a connected service under that service’s own policy.
Deleting the Dot does not automatically delete those separate items. Likewise, deleting a file does not necessarily remove a fact already saved as a ChatGPT memory.

How OpenAI describes protection and its limits
OpenAI says content is encrypted while stored and while traveling between you, OpenAI and service providers. Its documented safeguards include permission controls for plugins, Custom Rules, automatic review for some planned actions and safety monitoring.
Those are statements about OpenAI’s controls, not an independent security audit or a guarantee that a Dot will never expose or misinterpret information. The safest operating pattern is least privilege: connect only the services and devices needed, approve consequential actions, and avoid placing credentials or highly sensitive material in conversations.
Who can use a Dot and why availability may differ
Eligibility depends on account plan, region, age and rollout status. The Help Center guidance represented in the current rollout describes Pro availability as excluding the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom at that time. Business Premium was listed across supported regions. Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare beta access required an administrator and was off by default. A texting beta was limited to Pro users in the United States and could still be unavailable to some otherwise eligible users.
These launch conditions can change. Check your own account’s in-product notices and the current Help Center before assuming a feature, connected app or texting channel is available. An account’s inability to see a Dot does not indicate that the privacy controls are absent; it may simply reflect staged rollout, regional eligibility or an administrator’s policy.
Privacy decisions for common situations
You want a Dot to summarize information on your computer
Connect only the required computer, grant screen permission for the period needed, and revoke that permission afterward. Do not assume revoking access deletes any summary or fact already incorporated into the Dot or a ChatGPT conversation.
You want proactive updates from an app
Connect that app through the Plugins tab and confirm what its permissions allow. Proactive research can read permitted information and save private notes, but it cannot independently send messages or edit the app through a plugin. Disconnect the app when the monitoring task ends, then consider whether the Dot context or ChatGPT Memory needs separate cleanup.
You are concerned about model training
On a personal plan, review Improve the model for everyone in data controls. Understand that this setting addresses model-improvement use, not every operational process or the limited safety-related human review OpenAI says may occur. Business, Enterprise and Edu workspace data is not used for training by default.
You are leaving an account or handing over a computer
Revoke device permissions, disconnect apps, turn off Memory if desired, delete the Dot, and then inspect ChatGPT Memory, conversations, Codex threads and stored files individually. This sequence addresses both future access and data that lives outside the Dot.
The clearest way to think about a Dot’s privacy
A Dot has three separate privacy surfaces. Access covers the computer capabilities and connected apps you authorize. Context covers information the Dot retains while you keep it. Shared data covers ChatGPT Memory, model-improvement eligibility, conversations and files stored elsewhere. Each surface has its own control, and none of the individual switches is a universal erase button.
So, a Dot can hear through a permitted microphone connection, remember through its own context and ChatGPT Memory, and share through authorized apps and applicable ChatGPT data settings. It cannot do those things merely because the name “Dot” appears in your account: the connection, permission and retention choices determine the actual scope.
