A useful business website does three jobs immediately: it explains what the company offers and who it serves, gives visitors a clear way to take the next step, and provides trustworthy information they can use. The essentials are not an “AI page,” a special file, or a pile of automatically generated articles. They are a fast, accessible, secure, crawlable site with accurate, specific content.
Use the checklist below to build those foundations, then apply the final audit to find the gaps that could cost you enquiries, bookings, sales, or trust.

The essential checklist
Before choosing a platform or worrying about AI search, make sure the site can answer a visitor’s basic questions and support the action that matters to the business.

- A clear offer: State what you do, who you help, the problem you solve, and the main result a customer can expect.
- Relevant business details: Show service areas, opening hours, pricing approach, contact details, delivery limits, qualifications, or other facts that affect a buying decision.
- A visible next step: Let people call, email, book, request a quote, buy, visit, or start a support conversation without hunting through the site.
- Mobile and keyboard usability: Layouts, forms, menus, buttons, and media must work on small screens and with assistive technology.
- Readable structure: Use descriptive page titles, logical headings, meaningful links, semantic HTML, and important information in text that browsers and assistive tools can access.
- Trust and security: Explain policies and data use accurately, serve the site over HTTPS, and protect administrative accounts and software.
- Original, useful content: Answer real customer questions with details, evidence, examples, and policies specific to the business.
- Measurement: Track completed business goals, not just visits or search clicks.
Google’s Search Essentials describes people-first information and technical accessibility as the base for appearing in Search. It does not prescribe one universal set of pages or calls to action, so adapt this checklist to the customer task and the type of business.

Make the business and the next action obvious
Explain the offer in the first screen
A first-time visitor should understand the business without interpreting slogans. Put a plain-language description near the top of the home page: what is sold or provided, the audience, and the location or coverage area when geography affects service. A specialist plumber, for example, should identify the work performed and the towns served; an online software company should identify the type of customer and the job the product performs.
Use a specific primary heading rather than a generic “Welcome.” Follow it with evidence that supports the claim: service details, product specifications, an example outcome, credentials, or a concise explanation of the process. Avoid promises that cannot be verified.
Give visitors a complete route to action
Choose one primary action for each important page. A service page might invite a quote request; a clinic page might offer booking; a shop product page might provide purchase and delivery information. Keep the action visible on phones and repeat it after the decision-making information, not in place of that information.
Every form should identify required fields, explain what happens after submission, show an error in text, and provide a confirmation. Display a phone number, email address, physical address, or other contact method in a consistent location. If the business does not serve everyone, state eligibility, service boundaries, minimum order sizes, or appointment conditions before someone submits a request.
Publish the details that prevent bad surprises
Visitors need accurate information about prices or how estimates are calculated, cancellation and return rules, delivery or response times, payment methods, warranties, accessibility of the premises, and support hours when those facts affect the decision. Link to fuller policy pages from the relevant offer page instead of burying crucial restrictions in a footer.
Design for phones and assistive technology
Mobile is the indexing baseline
Google says it uses the mobile version of a site for indexing and ranking in its mobile-first indexing guidance. Build one responsive experience rather than a reduced mobile site that hides key content. Test at narrow and wide widths for clipped headings, horizontal scrolling, tiny controls, overlapping fixed banners, and forms that are difficult to complete with a thumb.
Keep navigation short and predictable. Make tap targets large enough to use without precision, keep important controls away from areas covered by browser or device UI, and compress images and scripts so the main content appears promptly on a typical mobile connection. Do not remove phone numbers, prices, specifications, or other decision-making content on small screens.
Use WCAG as the technical reference
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) provide the established technical framework for perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust content. A checklist alone does not prove conformance or determine legal obligations; requirements depend on jurisdiction, sector, and the facts of the service.
- Give informative images concise alternative text. Mark decorative images as decorative so they are not read aloud unnecessarily.
- Use real headings in order, labels connected to form fields, and link text that explains its destination. “Read the delivery policy” is more useful than “click here.”
- Make all functions available from a keyboard, with a visible focus indicator and no keyboard trap.
- Do not communicate meaning through color alone. Provide sufficient contrast and clear error and success states.
- Allow text to resize and reflow without losing information or controls.
- Caption prerecorded video and provide a transcript when the spoken or visual information is needed to understand the message.
- Respect reduced-motion preferences and avoid flashing content that could trigger a seizure.
Test with a keyboard and a screen reader in addition to automated scanning. An accessibility overlay cannot substitute for fixing the underlying HTML, content, focus order, or interaction design.

Build trust before asking for data or money
Make policies match reality
Publish privacy, cookie, terms, refund, shipping, cancellation, and accessibility information that describes what the business actually does. Identify the organization responsible for the site and provide a practical way to ask questions or make a rights request where applicable. Do not claim that data is never shared if a booking, payment, analytics, advertising, or support provider receives it.
Collect only the information needed for the stated purpose, explain retention and choices in plain language, and ensure the form, consent controls, and confirmation message follow the promises in the policy. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s consumer privacy guidance is a baseline resource, not a universal legal determination for every country or industry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Serve every page, including forms and checkout, over HTTPS with a valid TLS certificate. The FTC says in its 2019 web-host guidance that the service chosen should include TLS to help protect customer privacy. HTTPS does not make an unsafe application secure by itself, so also keep the content management system, plugins, themes, server components, and integrations updated.
Use strong, unique passwords stored in a password manager, enable multifactor authentication for hosting, domain, email, analytics, payment, and administrator accounts, and give each person only the access needed for their role. Keep tested backups that are separate from the production account. Remove former staff and unused integrations promptly. The FTC’s small-business cybersecurity guidance offers additional U.S. baseline practices.
Make pages understandable to visitors and crawlers
Give every important page a descriptive structure
Write a distinct title element and a useful meta description for each indexable page. Start with one descriptive main heading, then use headings that reflect the actual questions or steps on the page. Use semantic elements such as navigation, main content, sections, lists, tables, and buttons so browsers and assistive tools can interpret the page.
Link related pages with descriptive anchor text. A service page should lead to the relevant pricing approach, case evidence, policies, and contact or booking route. Keep important facts in accessible HTML text instead of placing them only inside an image, canvas, animation, or video.
Check crawlability and indexing
Google’s developer SEO guide explains the basics of making pages discoverable. Confirm that pages intended for search are not blocked by a mistaken noindex directive, robots rule, login wall, or broken internal link. Submit an accurate XML sitemap when it helps discovery, use canonical URLs consistently, and monitor indexing in Search Console.
Eligibility is not a guarantee: Google may choose not to crawl, index, rank, or display a page even when its technical requirements are met. Keep staging, duplicate, thin, and private material out of the index deliberately rather than relying on chance.
Rank #3
Publish information that earns confidence
Prefer specific expertise over commodity text
Explain how the business works, what a customer should prepare, which options suit different situations, common limitations, and what happens after purchase. Include original photographs, diagrams, demonstrations, documentation, or first-hand expertise when they genuinely help. Identify authors or reviewers for advice where credentials matter, and show dates or update notes when facts can change.
Do not create dozens of near-identical pages by swapping a town name or query variant. Google’s 2026 guidance emphasizes unique value and warns against mass-producing thin pages. A smaller set of detailed pages that serve real customers is safer and more useful than a large archive with no additional information.
Use media and structured data honestly
Relevant, high-quality images and video can clarify a product, process, place, or result. Give each asset an appropriate text alternative and provide captions or transcripts when needed. Keep file sizes reasonable and ensure the surrounding text explains what the media shows.
Structured data can help search systems understand a page and can qualify it for particular Search features. Markup must accurately match visible content; it cannot turn an unsupported claim into a fact. Use the schema types that describe the actual organization, product, service, article, event, or review, and validate changes before deploying them.
What AI search changes—and what it does not
The established foundations still determine eligibility
Google’s AI Features and Your Website guidance says AI Overviews and AI Mode use the normal Search systems. Pages need to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search snippets, and Google gives no guarantee that an eligible page will be included in an AI response. The page was last updated on December 10, 2025 UTC.
“There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”

That means the practical priorities remain accessible text, clear structure, useful internal links, accurate information, good mobile behavior, and a site Googlebot can crawl. Write for the person who needs the answer; do not hide essential context behind an interaction that search systems or assistive technology cannot access.
There is no Google-only AI shortcut
Google’s Guide to Optimizing for Generative AI Features on Google Search, introduced as a resource on May 15, 2026, says there is no special schema.org markup, AI text file, or extra technical requirement for these features. It also says there is no requirement to split pages into tiny “chunks,” no ideal page length, and no need to create llms.txt for Google Search. Those statements describe Google Search; another AI product may use different systems.
Rank #4
Do not manufacture mentions, reviews, or large numbers of near-duplicate pages to influence generated answers. Do not promise that a particular wording pattern will earn a citation, ranking, or AI Overview placement. Google’s own guide notes that you do not need to accomplish everything in it to succeed in Search.
Make answers easy to verify
Use question-and-answer sections when customers genuinely ask those questions, but answer in complete context rather than isolated fragments. State who a policy applies to, which location or product version it covers, and when a date or price was last checked. Link claims to the page where supporting details live. This helps a person, a crawler, and a generated answer reach the same interpretation without inventing missing conditions.

There is no universally best platform. Compare the options against the work the site must perform and the team maintaining it.
| Decision area | Hosted builder | Managed or custom site |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and updates | Usually quicker for a small team; editing, hosting, and routine updates may be in one interface. | May require a developer or agency; gives the team more control over release and content workflows. |
| Design and functionality | Templates and built-in features can limit unusual layouts or integrations. | More flexibility for bespoke workflows, booking, ecommerce, databases, or customer portals. |
| Portability | Moving designs, content, domains, or integrations may be constrained by the provider. | Source code and data arrangements can offer more control, but portability depends on the contract and architecture. |
| Security and TLS | Ask what the provider manages, how certificates and backups work, and how incidents are handled. | Confirm who patches the server, dependencies, certificates, monitoring, backups, and recovery process. |
| Accessibility and mobile quality | Test the actual templates and editor output; a platform label does not establish WCAG conformance. | Include WCAG testing in design, development, content entry, and future changes. |
| Support and maintenance | Support may be centralized, with less control over timing and roadmap. | Requires a maintenance agreement or internal expertise; clarify response times and ownership. |
For either route, verify domain ownership, data export, account recovery, TLS, backups, accessibility responsibilities, analytics ownership, and integration limits before committing. A low setup burden is not a saving if the site cannot support the booking, payment, lead-handling, or support process customers need.
Measure the business outcome
Define one or more conversions before installing analytics: a completed booking, qualified enquiry, quote request, sale, phone call, store visit, download, or support resolution. Record whether the action completed successfully, not merely whether a button was viewed.
Google’s May 21, 2025 Search Central post, “Succeeding in AI Search,” advises site owners to consider conversions and visit value instead of focusing only on clicks. Google’s later AI Search guide notes that Search Console has a generative AI performance report; availability and reporting details can change, so document the date and property settings when reviewing it.

A prioritized website audit
Run this sequence with a real phone and a test customer task, not just a desktop preview.
- State the offer: Read the home page title and first screen. Can a stranger identify the business, audience, service area, and outcome in a few seconds?
- Complete the main task: On a phone, try to call, book, request a quote, buy, or contact support. Record every unclear label, unnecessary field, error, and dead end.
- Check mobile behavior: Test narrow widths, orientation changes, slow loading, menus, pop-ups, forms, and checkout. Confirm that no essential information disappears.
- Check accessibility: Navigate with a keyboard, inspect focus order, test headings and labels with a screen reader, verify contrast, and review image alternatives, captions, and error messages against WCAG.
- Check trust: Open privacy, terms, refund, delivery, cancellation, contact, and accessibility pages. Confirm that each promise matches the actual process and that dates, addresses, prices, and hours are current.
- Check security: Verify HTTPS and certificate validity, update software, test a backup restoration, enable multifactor authentication, remove unused accounts, and review administrator permissions.
- Check indexing: Inspect important URLs for accidental
noindex, blocked resources, login requirements, broken links, duplicate canonicals, and missing internal links. Review Search Console coverage and sitemap status. - Check content quality: Remove placeholder, duplicate, outdated, or location-swapped pages. Add the specific evidence and explanations a customer needs to decide.
- Check measurement: Test conversion events from start to finish and assign a business value where practical. Review outcomes by landing page and device, then prioritize the largest obstacle.
Keep the essentials working
Assign an owner for content, security, accessibility, analytics, and domain administration. Review contact details, service areas, policies, prices, opening hours, forms, integrations, and staff access whenever the business changes. Schedule software and dependency updates, backup-restoration tests, accessibility checks after design changes, and a real mobile conversion test at regular intervals.
The durable strategy for an AI-shaped search environment is straightforward: make the business understandable, make the next action easy, publish information worth trusting, and maintain the technical conditions that let people and search systems access it. AI features may change how visitors discover and summarize pages, but they do not remove the need for a website that works when the visitor arrives.
