A partial lower jaw found in Ethiopia’s Afar region is the first identified Paranthropus fossil from the area. Dated to about 2.6 million years ago, it extends the genus’s known range roughly 1,000 km north and challenges the assumption that its distinctive chewing anatomy kept it to a narrow set of habitats. The fossil does not, however, reveal a precise diet or prove that it competed with other hominins.
What is the fossil, and where was it found?
The specimen, catalogued as MLP-3000, is a partial lower jaw discovered at Mille-Logya in Ethiopia’s Afar region. The University of Chicago identifies it as the first known Paranthropus specimen from Afar. The Natural History Museum describes the find as extending the genus’s known occurrence about 1,000 km farther north than previously documented.

It is commonly described as about 2.6 million years old. The study authors give a more precise estimated age interval of 2.5–2.9 million years in the abstract of their 2026 paper. The shorter figure is a useful approximation; the interval conveys the study’s dating estimate without implying a single exact year.

Why does a jaw challenge ideas about Paranthropus?
Paranthropus is often associated with a robust chewing apparatus: large jaws and molars that inspired the nickname “Nutcracker Man.” Such anatomy has contributed to the idea that the genus was a highly specialized eater, potentially tied to a narrower range of environments.

MLP-3000 changes the geographic picture. Its presence in Afar suggests that Paranthropus occupied a broader area than the known fossils had indicated, and that its chewing specialization did not necessarily prevent it from dispersing across varied eastern African habitats. As the study’s authors frame the finding, the genus’s distribution and versatility were broader than the earlier record suggested. [Natural History Museum; Nature study abstract]

It documents a northern occurrence
The jaw provides evidence that Paranthropus was present in Afar during the period represented by the fossil. Its absence from earlier discoveries in the region was not proof that the genus had never lived there; the new find shows how an incomplete fossil record can shape assumptions about where a group occurred.

- Fossil replica of a Mesozoic echinoderm measuring approximately 4cm (1.25")
- Sturdy fossil replica made from resin is designed to last through heavy classroom and laboratory use
- This echinoderm is related to the sea urchins and starfish of today
- Perfect for use in the classroom during lessons on fossils and paleontology
- hough the echinoderm's durable test, or shell, is often preserved, the more fragile spines are rarely preserved
It does not reveal an exact menu
Large molars and a robust jaw are anatomical evidence, not a direct record of every food an individual ate. The discovery challenges the idea that a presumed dietary specialization necessarily confined Paranthropus to a small geographic or ecological range, but it does not establish a precise menu.
It does not prove competition
Australopithecus garhi, from the same broad period, also had large molars. The Natural History Museum cautions that tooth size alone is too crude a basis for concluding that the two groups competed for the same resources. The fossil therefore cannot settle whether competition shaped their presence or absence in Afar. [Natural History Museum]

How was the jaw studied?
The University of Chicago says the team used micro-CT scanning to examine internal anatomy and morphology, alongside comparisons with fossils from other parts of Africa. Digital imaging let researchers view internal features, including tooth roots, without relying only on the fossil’s visible outer surface. These analyses support the identification and interpretation of the specimen; they do not turn the jaw into direct evidence of a specific diet or social interaction. Why this discovery matters
The central change is not that scientists now know exactly what Paranthropus ate or how it interacted with other hominins. It is that the genus’s documented range now reaches into Afar, making a narrow distribution less tenable and showing that absence from a region’s fossil record can reflect missing evidence rather than true absence.
Zeresenay Alemseged, a University of Chicago professor and co-author of the study, said: “This discovery is so much more than a simple snapshot of Paranthropus’ occurrence: It sheds fresh light on the driving forces behind the evolution of the genus.” [University of Chicago]
