What a 10mm Fisheye Lens Looks Like on APS-C vs Full-Frame Cameras

A 10mm fisheye lens does not produce one universal image on every camera. The result depends on the lens’s sensor coverage, the lens’s projection (diagonal or circular), how much of its image circle reaches the sensor, and whether the camera is recording its full sensor or an APS-C crop.

On an APS-C camera with an APS-C fisheye, 10mm normally fills the frame with an extremely wide, deliberately curved view. On a full-frame camera, a full-frame fisheye records a wider portion of its projection, while an APS-C 10mm lens may leave dark corners, show a nearly circular image in a special lens-and-body combination, or produce poor edges. The physical focal length remains 10mm in every case; only the recorded portion and angle of view change.

What changes when the same 10mm fisheye is used on different sensors?

Focal length and coverage are separate specifications. “10mm” describes the lens’s optical focal length, not the size of the sensor it covers. A smaller APS-C sensor records a smaller portion of the lens’s projected image. A larger full-frame sensor records more of that projection if the lens’s image circle is large enough.

That is why two photographs taken at 10mm can look very different. The camera may be using a different sensor area, the lens may be designed for a different format, and the image may be frame-filling or circular. Crop-factor language such as “10mm looks like 15mm” describes an angle-of-view comparison, not a change in the lens’s physical focal length.

Fisheye projection versus ordinary wide-angle perspective

A fisheye lens intentionally bends straight lines, especially near the edges, to achieve a very wide field of view. The amount and distribution of that curvature are determined by the lens design. A 180-degree specification also needs a direction attached to it: horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. A manufacturer’s 180-degree diagonal figure does not mean 180 degrees in every direction.

Diagonal and circular fisheye images

A diagonal, or frame-filling, fisheye uses the sensor area to make a rectangular photograph that reaches the corners or edges. A circular fisheye projects a visible circle surrounded by black. The same nominal focal length can produce either style on different formats, depending on the image circle and the camera body.

How 10mm looks on APS-C

APS-C lens on an APS-C camera

This is the combination for which most APS-C 10mm fisheyes are designed. The lens’s image circle is sized around the smaller sensor, so the camera records the intended wide, curved frame rather than the black border that can appear when the lens is placed on a larger sensor.

At 10mm, named APS-C examples specify a 180-degree diagonal view. Sigma lists 180 degrees for its 10mm F2.8 EX DC Fisheye HSM, and the HD PENTAX-DA FISH-EYE 10–17mm specification lists 180 degrees diagonally at 10mm on APS-C. Those are manufacturer figures for those products, not a promise that every 10mm fisheye has the same coverage.

In a photograph, the near foreground can appear dramatically enlarged while distant subjects recede quickly. Lines that are straight in the scene can curve strongly toward the edges. The frame is usually filled, so you see the fisheye effect without a circular black surround.

Full-frame fisheye lens on an APS-C camera

An APS-C sensor samples the central part of a full-frame fisheye’s projection. The result is a tighter composition than the same lens on a full-frame body, with less of the extreme edge area visible. The lens has not become a longer focal length; the camera is simply recording a smaller central region.

This combination can be useful when you want a less extreme-looking fisheye frame or need to avoid the most distorted outer edges. Do not compare it directly with a full-frame sample unless the focal length, crop mode and projection type are also matched.

How 10mm looks on full-frame

Full-frame fisheye on a full-frame camera

A full-frame fisheye is designed to cover the larger sensor. At 10mm, the camera records more of the lens’s image than an APS-C body would. Whether the result is a rectangular, frame-filling fisheye or a circle depends on that specific lens’s projection and image-circle design.

“Full-frame fisheye” commonly means a diagonal fisheye that fills the frame, but the label alone does not tell you the exact horizontal, vertical or diagonal angles. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the particular lens and camera format.

APS-C fisheye lens on a full-frame camera

This is the combination most likely to surprise photographers. An APS-C lens may not project a large enough image circle to cover a full-frame sensor. The usual symptoms are heavy darkening at the corners or edges, and sometimes a visibly clipped image circle. Sigma explicitly warns that its DC-design 10mm fisheye is intended for APS-C sensors and will vignette on sensors larger than APS-C.

Some lenses have enough peripheral projection to create an unusual full-frame result. Pentax documents a special use of its APS-C HD PENTAX-DA FISH-EYE 10–17mm on compatible full-frame K-1-series bodies: remove the hood and select full-frame capture, and the wide end can produce an image close to circular. Pentax also cautions that areas beyond the intended image circle can show vignetting or reduced peripheral imaging performance. This is a lens-and-body-specific creative option, not evidence that APS-C fisheyes generally cover full-frame.

A direct specification comparison: the PENTAX 10–17mm

The HD PENTAX-DA FISH-EYE 10–17mm provides a useful same-lens comparison because Ricoh Imaging publishes angles for both capture formats. At 10mm, its full-frame figures are approximately 180 degrees horizontal, 139 degrees vertical and 180 degrees diagonal. On APS-C at 10mm, the figures are approximately 137 degrees horizontal, 89 degrees vertical and 180 degrees diagonal.

Capture format and setting Horizontal angle Vertical angle Diagonal angle What the specification represents
Full-frame body, 10mm Approximately 180° Approximately 139° Approximately 180° Ricoh Imaging/PENTAX manufacturer comparison for this lens
APS-C body, 10mm Approximately 137° Approximately 89° Approximately 180° Ricoh Imaging/PENTAX manufacturer comparison for this lens
APS-C body, 17mm Not stated in the cited comparison Not stated in the cited comparison 100° PENTAX product specification

The identical 180-degree diagonal figure at 10mm does not mean the two rectangular frames are identical. The horizontal and vertical coverage changes substantially because the full-frame sensor has different dimensions and records a different part of the projection. Pentax’s near-circular full-frame mode also requires the specified K-1-series compatibility and hoodless setup.

What you will actually see in sample photos

Frame edges

On APS-C with an APS-C fisheye, the image normally reaches the frame edges as intended. On full-frame with that same lens, inspect all four corners first: black crescents, dark corners or a circular boundary indicate that the lens’s image circle does not cover the sensor.

Curvature and composition

The central subject can look relatively stable while the edges bend and stretch. Moving the camera changes the effect dramatically: placing a person or architectural line near an edge exaggerates curvature, while keeping the subject near the center gives a more controlled appearance. These visual differences are consequences of composition and projection as well as sensor format, so two samples at “10mm” are not automatically comparable.

Edge sharpness and illumination

When a lens is used outside its designed image circle, the outer area can lose illumination or imaging quality. Pentax specifically warns of vignetting and reduced peripheral performance in its special full-frame use. A dark edge is therefore not always an artistic circular-fisheye effect; it may be optical coverage failure.

Crop-factor language: useful, but easy to misuse

Manufacturers sometimes provide crop-factor equivalence to help photographers compare framing between formats. A common APS-C comparison is roughly 1.5 times the focal length used as a field-of-view reference, so a 10mm lens may be described as having an angle of view similar to a 15mm lens on full-frame. That statement is an equivalence convention. The lens remains 10mm, and its fisheye projection does not turn into a conventional 15mm lens.

Do not use a crop-factor number to predict whether a lens will cover a sensor. Coverage is determined by the lens’s image circle and design. A lens can have a familiar crop-equivalent framing on APS-C yet vignette badly when mounted on full-frame.

Sigma 10mm F2.8 EX DC Fisheye HSM

Sigma identifies this model as a DC lens for APS-C sensors, specifies a 180-degree angle of view and warns that larger sensors will vignette. Sigma also marks the model discontinued. Treat it as a used-market example: verify the camera mount, mechanical condition and current availability rather than assuming it is a current product.

HD PENTAX-DA FISH-EYE 10–17mm F3.5–4.5 ED

Pentax lists this as an APS-C 10–17mm fisheye zoom with a 180–100-degree diagonal range on APS-C. Its documented hoodless, near-circular full-frame behavior on compatible K-1-series bodies makes it a useful illustration of how a lens can have an unusual format-specific result. Check K-mount compatibility and current stock before purchase.

Laowa 4.5–10mm f/2.8 CF Zoom Fisheye

Laowa describes the 10mm setting as a frame-filling diagonal fisheye. Because exact mount and sensor-coverage details must be confirmed for the particular version, use that statement as a starting point and check the current product specification before relying on it for a camera body.

How to compare two 10mm fisheye images correctly

  1. Identify the lens format. Check whether it is marked for APS-C, full-frame, or another sensor size.
  2. Identify the camera capture area. Confirm whether the body recorded its full-frame sensor or an APS-C crop mode.
  3. Check the projection type. Determine whether the sample is diagonal/frame-filling or circular.
  4. Match the angle measurement. A horizontal figure cannot be compared directly with a diagonal figure.
  5. Note accessories and setup. Record the lens hood, adapters and any special hoodless configuration; these can change whether the image circle is clipped.
  6. Inspect the edges. Look for black corners, brightness falloff and reduced detail before judging the lens’s intended look.
  7. Match the camera position. A few centimeters of movement can change the foreground exaggeration and edge curvature, even when the focal-length setting is identical.

Choosing the right combination

Choose APS-C plus an APS-C fisheye when you want a predictable frame-filling effect

This is the straightforward option for an APS-C body. You get the lens’s designed coverage and avoid relying on a crop mode or an accidental image-circle limitation. Confirm the mount and the manufacturer’s angle-of-view specification for the exact lens.

Choose full-frame plus a full-frame fisheye when you need the format’s full coverage

This lets the larger sensor record the projection the lens was designed to cover. Verify whether the model is diagonal or circular and read the horizontal, vertical and diagonal specifications separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an APS-C fisheye on full-frame only with a specific reason

Expect vignetting unless the manufacturer documents broader coverage. A special near-circular result can be worthwhile for creative work, but it may require a particular body, a removed hood and acceptance of weaker peripheral performance.

Use a full-frame fisheye on APS-C for a tighter, central view

The camera records less of the projection, producing a narrower composition than on full-frame. This can reduce the most extreme edge distortion, but it does not change the lens’s physical focal length or make it an ordinary rectilinear wide-angle lens.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every 10mm fisheye is 180 degrees in every direction. Tie the number to the exact model and specify whether it is horizontal, vertical or diagonal.
  • Assuming APS-C lenses can never make an image on full-frame. Most will show incomplete coverage, but Pentax documents a special near-circular example on compatible bodies.
  • Treating “10mm equals 15mm” as a focal-length change. It is only a field-of-view comparison based on a crop factor.
  • Comparing a circular sample with a diagonal sample. The projection type changes the entire frame shape.
  • Ignoring the hood. A hood can clip an already unusual full-frame image circle, while removing it can introduce edge artifacts or expose more of the circle.
  • Reading a discontinued specification as a current buying recommendation. Confirm present availability, mount and condition, especially for the Sigma example.

Bottom line for your camera

If your camera is APS-C and your 10mm fisheye is designed for APS-C, expect a filled rectangular frame with a very wide, curved view; the cited Sigma and Pentax examples specify 180 degrees diagonally at 10mm. If your camera is full-frame, a full-frame fisheye can deliver a wider frame, while an APS-C model will usually vignette or show incomplete coverage. A documented exception, such as the hoodless Pentax 10–17mm on certain K-1-series bodies, can approach a circular image but comes with edge-performance cautions. Compare sensor coverage, projection, crop mode, angle direction and accessories before drawing conclusions from any two photos.
