What 73 MW Means for an AI Data Center’s Computing Capacity

73 megawatts (MW) tells you the scale of a power system, not how much computing an AI data center can deliver. It does not reveal the number or model of GPUs, how many servers are installed, how heavily they run, or which AI workloads the site can serve. Before interpreting the figure, determine whether it means the IT load, the entire facility’s demand, a peak value, or the capacity of an electrical connection.

If 73 MW were consumed continuously throughout a non-leap year, the arithmetic would be 73 MW × 8,760 hours = 639,480 MWh, or about 639.5 GWh. That is a conditional calculation, not evidence of a particular facility’s annual consumption.

What a 73 MW figure actually tells you

MW is a unit of power: the rate at which electricity is being supplied or used at a given moment. A 73 MW label therefore describes an electrical scale. It is analogous to saying how wide a fuel pipeline is, not how many miles a vehicle can travel. Computing capacity requires a separate set of facts about equipment and operation.

A data center’s electrical demand can include compute servers, storage, networking, cooling, power-conversion equipment, lighting, and other building systems. The share assigned to each category varies with the facility’s design and operating conditions. Two sites with the same headline MW figure can consequently contain very different amounts of accelerator hardware and deliver very different AI performance.

The figure also has no built-in information about utilization. A room full of accelerators drawing little power while waiting for jobs will produce less useful work than a similar room running sustained training or inference, even if both sites have the same electrical rating.

First identify what “73 MW” measures

The same number can describe several different points in a data center’s electrical chain. Treating them as interchangeable is the fastest way to overstate computing capacity.

IT load

IT load is the power used by information-technology equipment, such as servers, accelerators, storage, and networking. If 73 MW is specifically the IT load, it is a more direct indicator of the power available to computing hardware than a whole-facility figure. Even then, it does not determine an accelerator count: server configuration, accelerator model, host CPUs, memory, storage, and networking all affect the result.

Total facility demand

A total-facility figure includes the IT load plus cooling, electrical losses, pumps, fans, lighting, and other infrastructure. If the 73 MW number is a whole-building demand, only part of it reaches servers. The relationship is commonly expressed with power usage effectiveness (PUE):

PUE = total facility power ÷ IT equipment power

With a measured PUE, an analyst could estimate IT power as total facility power divided by PUE. Without that value, the IT portion of 73 MW cannot be recovered from the headline number alone.

Peak or nameplate demand

A peak figure records the highest demand reached, or the design limit for which electrical and cooling systems were built. It may occur only briefly. It should not be read as the site’s average operating load or as the amount of electricity consumed every hour.

Grid connection or planned capacity

A utility interconnection, substation, or development permit can be rated for 73 MW even when the data center is not yet built, is only partly occupied, or normally draws less. Connection capacity indicates what the grid can provide; it is not a census of installed servers.

Power and energy are different quantities

Annual electricity use is measured in megawatt-hours (MWh) or gigawatt-hours (GWh), not MW. To turn a power figure into energy, multiply by the number of hours for which that power is actually drawn.

For a constant 73 MW over 8,760 hours (365 days):

  • 73 MW × 8,760 hours = 639,480 MWh
  • 639,480 MWh ÷ 1,000 = approximately 639.5 GWh

This calculation assumes a continuous, unchanging load. Real facilities ramp equipment up and down, reserve capacity for failures, undergo maintenance, and may be expanded in stages. A more realistic annual estimate requires a load factor, which represents the average demand relative to the maximum or rated demand:

annual energy (MWh) = rated power (MW) × 8,760 × load factor

The International Energy Agency’s data framework treats capacity, load factor, PUE, and electricity consumption as distinct measures. A 73 MW capacity therefore cannot be presented as 639.5 GWh of actual annual use unless continuous operation at that level has been demonstrated.

Where 73 MW sits among broad data-center scales

The IEA offers broad context rather than a hardware-conversion rule. Its 2025 Energy and AI analysis describes a conventional data center as around 10–25 MW and a hyperscale, AI-focused data center as 100 MW or more. A 73 MW figure is above that conventional reference range and below the cited hyperscale benchmark.

An IEA commentary published in 2024 uses a different broad description: average data centers draw around 5–10 MW, while large hyperscale centers draw 100 MW or more. These ranges come from separate publications and should not be combined into a single formal classification system.

Reference Broad power scale How to use it
IEA, 2024 commentary Average data center: about 5–10 MW General context for smaller or average facilities
IEA, 2025 Energy and AI Conventional data center: about 10–25 MW Another broad reference range, from a different publication
IEA, 2025 Energy and AI Hyperscale AI-focused data center: 100 MW or more Broad description of very large AI-oriented sites
Question’s figure 73 MW Falls between the cited conventional and hyperscale reference scales, without identifying a facility class

Being between those ranges does not prove that a site is “mid-scale,” nor does it establish the amount of AI hardware inside. The comparisons are useful for orientation only.

Why 73 MW cannot be converted into a GPU count

There is no universal GPUs-per-MW conversion. A facility can spend its IT power on many combinations of CPUs, GPU accelerators, memory, storage, switches, and cooling systems. Accelerator generations also have different power envelopes and performance characteristics. The same model can be installed in servers with different host processors, memory capacities, and networking arrangements.

Even if the accelerator model were known, a power total would still be insufficient. You would need to know whether the 73 MW is IT power or facility power, how much is allocated to non-accelerator equipment, and whether the stated draw is a design maximum, an average, or a momentary reading.

Computing capacity adds another layer. A GPU’s theoretical peak arithmetic rate is not the same as delivered training or inference throughput. Performance depends on model architecture, numerical precision, batch size, memory traffic, interconnect bandwidth, software efficiency, and how effectively jobs keep the hardware busy. Two installations with identical accelerator counts can therefore achieve different results.

Information required for a defensible capacity estimate

To move from a 73 MW headline to a computing estimate, collect the following information in order:

  1. Define the electrical boundary. Establish whether the number is IT load, total facility demand, peak demand, or grid/interconnection capacity. Ask for the measurement point and the date or project phase.
  2. Separate actual from planned capacity. Determine how much equipment is installed and energized now, how much is under construction, and how much is reserved for future expansion.
  3. Obtain the IT-power split. If 73 MW is a facility total, obtain PUE or a direct IT-load figure. Without it, the power available to servers remains uncertain.
  4. Inventory the equipment. Identify accelerator models and counts, server configurations, host CPUs, memory, storage, and networking. A rack-level power budget is more useful than a building rating.
  5. Measure operating conditions. Record average and peak draw, load factor, cooling conditions, and the proportion of accelerators available for production jobs rather than testing, redundancy, or maintenance.
  6. Specify the workload and metric. Training capacity might be expressed as time to train a defined model; inference capacity might use requests per second, tokens per second, latency, or concurrent users. A single “AI capacity” number is meaningless without this definition.
  7. Validate with measured performance. Use a benchmark or production telemetry for the stated model and software stack. Hardware specifications alone provide a theoretical ceiling, not guaranteed service throughput.

How PUE and load factor change the interpretation

PUE describes infrastructure overhead, while load factor describes how consistently a rated capacity is used. They answer different questions.

  • PUE: How much total facility power is required for each unit of IT power?
  • Load factor: How much of the rated or maximum demand is drawn on average over a period?
  • Annual consumption: The resulting energy over time, usually reported in MWh or GWh.

For example, a site could have a 73 MW electrical design and a low load factor during a staged build-out. Another site could draw close to its rating continuously. Their annual energy use and useful AI work would differ even before considering accelerator type or workload.

How to compare a 73 MW facility with another site

Use matching definitions and time periods. A fair comparison should place the following fields side by side:

Comparison axis Question to ask
Power boundary Are both figures IT load, total facility demand, peak draw, or connection capacity?
Project status Are the values operational, measured, planned, or permitted?
Time basis Are you comparing an instantaneous reading, a rated maximum, an average, or annual energy?
Efficiency What PUE applies, and was it measured under comparable conditions?
Utilization What load factor or accelerator utilization is actually reported?
Hardware Which accelerator models, counts, server designs, memory, and network fabrics are installed?
Workload Is the comparison for training, inference, or another workload, and what performance metric is used?

Comparing one site’s total facility MW with another site’s IT MW can make the first look larger or the second look more efficient when the underlying measurements are simply different.

Common mistakes when reading a 73 MW claim

  • Calling MW “capacity” without a qualifier. Say electrical capacity, facility demand, or IT load, depending on what was measured.
  • Assuming continuous operation. The 639.5 GWh figure is conditional on an uninterrupted 73 MW draw for every hour of a 365-day year.
  • Counting GPUs from a building rating. The equipment mix and IT-power share are unknown unless the operator supplies them.
  • Treating peak as average. A peak or nameplate value can substantially exceed normal demand.
  • Equating more power with more useful output. Throughput depends on utilization, software, networking, model size, precision, and other workload factors.
  • Using broad IEA ranges as classifications. The 5–10 MW, 10–25 MW, and 100 MW-or-more descriptions are context from different publications, not a universal taxonomy.

Three ways the same 73 MW statement could be read

Case 1: 73 MW of total facility demand

This indicates the combined draw of IT and supporting infrastructure at the stated operating point or design condition. The accelerator budget is lower than 73 MW and cannot be isolated without PUE or a direct IT-load measurement.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Case 2: 73 MW of IT load

This is a stronger indicator of computing scale because it excludes most building overhead. It still does not identify GPU count or throughput: servers, storage, networking, accelerator model, utilization, and workload remain unknown.

Case 3: 73 MW of grid connection capacity

This describes what the electrical connection can supply. It may include future phases or contingency margin, so it says nothing definitive about how many servers are operating today or how much energy the site consumes annually.

Bottom line

A 73 MW AI data center is electrically substantial: it is larger than the broad conventional ranges cited by the IEA and smaller than the 100 MW-or-more benchmark used for hyperscale AI-focused facilities. But MW alone cannot answer “how much computing?” Define the power boundary, establish actual utilization and efficiency, identify the accelerator hardware, and tie the estimate to a specific workload before drawing conclusions about AI capacity.
