1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes when a storage device is specified using decimal units. It is not the same as 1 TiB, the binary unit equal to 240 bytes. That difference, plus space used by formatting and system software, explains why a device may show less capacity available for your files than its label suggests.
How much storage is 1 TB?
In the decimal system used for storage-device specifications, 1 terabyte (TB) equals 1 trillion bytes, or 1,000 gigabytes (GB). Apple Support describes manufacturers’ use of decimal measurement in its capacity explanation.

Binary units use different values. A tebibyte (TiB) is 240 bytes, or 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. In the binary convention described by Apple, 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. NIST defines the binary prefix and TiB in its binary-prefix reference and glossary. Use TB and TiB carefully: they are not interchangeable.

There are two separate reasons the number shown or available can be lower than the product’s advertised decimal capacity:
#1 Best Overall
- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
- Different unit conventions: Some operating systems and apps calculate capacity using binary multiples, even when a display labels the result with decimal-style terms such as GB. A 1 TB device is about 931 GiB when its decimal byte count is divided into binary gibibytes. The displayed figure can therefore look smaller without indicating a defect or missing data.
- Formatting and system use: Formatting structures the storage for use, and the operating system may use additional space. The amount varies by device and software, so there is no universal usable-capacity figure for every 1 TB product.
To understand a particular display, check which unit the operating system actually uses and distinguish total device capacity from free space. A number such as 931 GB on a screen may reflect binary arithmetic presented under a different label; it is not, by itself, evidence that files have vanished.
How many files can 1 TB hold?
Capacity alone cannot give a reliable count of photos, videos, songs, or documents. File sizes vary with resolution, recording quality, format, compression, and the content itself. For a useful estimate, find the typical size of the files you plan to store, then divide the usable capacity by that size. For example, the calculation needs both a stated average file size and the device’s available space; without those inputs, a single file count would be misleading.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
What kinds of storage can have 1 TB capacity?
One terabyte describes capacity, not the way storage is connected or accessed. NIST’s October 2020 publication on storage infrastructure covers direct-attached, networked, and cloud-based storage. Its portable-storage definition includes removable hard drives and SSDs.
- Direct-attached storage: Connects to an individual device, such as an external drive.
- Network-accessed storage: Reached over a network and potentially shared among devices.
- Cloud storage: Accessed through a cloud service rather than a drive physically connected to the device.
When choosing among these arrangements, consider where you need access, whether you need to carry the storage, device and operating-system compatibility, and how much usable space you need. For a specific drive or service, verify its connector or requirements, current price, warranty, and any subscription or storage limits with the provider.
