“Westpac Comprehensive” can refer to two different Allianz-backed travel insurance options: a paid plan reached through Westpac’s general insurance referral, or a paid upgrade to eligible Westpac cardholders’ complimentary medical cover. They are not the same policy. Westpac’s public pages describe broad categories but do not establish the premium, benefit limits, excesses or detailed exclusions; check the PDS for the exact policy and purchase date before deciding whether it suits your trip.
Which Westpac Comprehensive policy is this?
Westpac’s general travel-insurance page refers customers to Allianz Global Assistance for plans and quotes. Separately, Westpac’s credit-card insurance page describes a paid Comprehensive International Travel Insurance upgrade for eligible cardholders, effective 1 October 2026. The card-linked upgrade is an option alongside complimentary International Medical Travel Insurance, not simply another name for every plan available through the general referral.

This distinction matters because eligibility, activation and terms can differ. The card eligibility rules below apply to the new complimentary card-linked medical cover, not automatically to Allianz plans reached through Westpac’s general travel-insurance page.

Who provides the insurance, and what does Westpac do?
Westpac says AWP Australia Pty Ltd trading as Allianz Global Assistance issues the travel insurance for Allianz Australia Insurance Limited. Westpac refers customers to Allianz and states that it does not guarantee the insurance. Westpac also discloses that it may receive a commission of up to 10% of the premium, excluding government fees and charges, plus GST, when a customer purchases Allianz travel insurance through its referral.

That relationship does not tell you whether a policy is good value or appropriate for your trip. Those judgments depend on the premium and the terms of the specific policy.
What does the cover include?
General travel-insurance plans referred by Westpac
Westpac lists plan-dependent categories that may include 24/7 Overseas Emergency Assistance, Overseas Medical & Hospital Expenses, Cancellation, Additional Expenses, and Luggage, Personal Effects & Valuables. These are categories, not promises that every plan covers every event or pays a particular amount. Allianz’s plan details and the applicable PDS determine the actual cover.

Card-linked complimentary medical cover and the paid upgrade
Westpac describes complimentary International Medical Travel Insurance for eligible cardholders as covering Overseas Emergency Assistance, Overseas Emergency Medical Costs and Personal Liability. The paid Comprehensive upgrade may add categories such as luggage, cancellation and trip delays, with optional cruise and snow-sports packs also mentioned. The full benefits, limits, conditions and exclusions depend on the applicable PDS; the category list alone is not enough to assess a claim or compare policies.

The official pages do not establish the exact premium, benefit limits, excesses or detailed exclusions for the policy being reviewed. Westpac directs customers to the relevant PDS for these terms. Get the document that matches the specific product and the date you intend to purchase it; do not assume an older booklet or a different Allianz policy describes your cover.

- Confirm whether you are considering a general Allianz-referred travel plan or the card-linked Comprehensive upgrade.
- Compare the premium and excess with the medical, evacuation, cancellation and luggage limits that apply to your trip.
- Read sublimits and exclusions, including how the policy treats pre-existing medical conditions and activities relevant to your itinerary.
- Check cruise or snow-sports cover requirements if either applies to your trip; optional packs may be needed for the card-linked upgrade.
- For card-linked cover, verify eligibility and activation requirements rather than assuming that holding a Westpac card is sufficient.
Without the applicable PDS and a quote, it is not possible to make a grounded value or suitability verdict. Treat Westpac’s category summaries as a starting point, not as a substitute for the policy wording.
Card-linked eligibility and the 2026 transition
For newly eligible card-linked complimentary international medical cover from 1 October 2026, Westpac lists conditions including an Australian permanent home, a return overseas ticket, at least A$500 in prepaid travel costs charged to the card before departure, prior activation and the cardholder being under 81. Spouses and dependants have separate requirements, so the cardholder’s eligibility does not establish that every traveller is covered.

Westpac says people eligible under the prior policy may remain on that policy for eligible trips ending by 30 September 2027, subject to the earlier policy’s terms. Check the policy documents and transition rules applicable to your booking; the new criteria should not be substituted for the earlier policy terms.
