Westinghouse WHC943BC Review: Specs, Fit, Wiring and Availability

The Westinghouse WHC943BC is a 90 cm, four-zone ceramic-glass cooktop with front touch controls, a triple-ring front-left zone and a hardwired electrical connection. It is a sound option to evaluate on specifications and installation fit, but it cannot be given an independent performance score: the consumer-testing body that reviewed this exact model keeps its detailed results behind a membership paywall, and the model’s availability is unclear. This review covers what the manufacturer and retailers publish, what you need to check before buying, and where the evidence stops.

What the WHC943BC is

The WHC943BC is a built-in, electric radiant (ceramic) cooktop, not an induction unit. Its glass surface is black, and the controls sit along the front edge rather than on a separate panel. The product information is consistent across Westinghouse’s specification sheet and the Australian retailer listing (prices and connection details in this review are for the Australian market, where the model was sold).

Specifications and bench fit

Measure your bench before ordering anything else. The manufacturer’s dimensions are the figures that decide whether the unit goes in at all.

Clearance requirements beyond the cut-out Not stated in the sources reviewed; check the model manual Westinghouse manual

The cut-out figure is the one most often misread. A 880 × 490 mm opening is the size the bench must provide; the 900 × 520 mm figure is the outer footprint of the cooktop itself.

Pre-purchase fit checklist

  • Confirm the bench opening is 880 mm wide and 490 mm deep, measured at the surface and the underside.
  • Check the bench material and substrate can take a built-in ceramic unit at this depth and heat load. Your installer should make this call.
  • Confirm the space beneath the cooktop and any cabinet clearances against the model manual, not just the cut-out.
  • Confirm a hardwired circuit is available or can be installed to the rating listed above.

Cooking zones and layout

The WHC943BC uses a mixed-size layout. The front-left zone is the largest and is a triple-ring design, which suits a large pan or a wok-sized pot. The other three zones are smaller and lower-powered.

Zone Position Power or size Source
Triple ceramic zone Front-left 2,300 W; 210 mm Westinghouse specification sheet
Medium zone Front-right 1,800 W; size not stated Appliances Online listing
Rear zone Rear-left 1,200 W; size not stated Appliances Online listing
Rear zone Rear-right 1,200 W; size not stated Appliances Online listing

CHOICE describes the rear pair as simmer zones and the front-right zone as medium, which fits the wattage figures above. Ceramic radiant zones heat more slowly than induction, so the lower wattages on the rear pair are less of a limitation than they would be on a fast-response cooktop, but check the zone sizes against your cookware before you buy.

Controls and safety functions

The Westinghouse sheet lists front touch controls, a programmable countdown timer of up to 99 minutes, a keep-warm function and a pause function. Safety features are a child lock, a safety cut-off, a fault indicator and residual-heat warning lamps that stay lit while a zone is still hot.

Electrical connection and installation

This is the point where many buyers get caught out. The WHC943BC is hardwired, meaning it is not supplied with a power cord and plug. The retailer lists a 6.5 kW connected load and a 27 A maximum current, and says a qualified electrician must install it.

  1. Confirm the existing supply and isolator are rated for the listed 6.5 kW load and 27 A current.
  2. Have a licensed electrician verify the circuit and the cable run to the cooktop before the cooktop arrives.
  3. Have the cooktop installed in the cut-out and the connection made to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Keep the manual with the appliance and register the warranty if the manufacturer requires it.

The model-family manual lists WHC943BC among its covered ceramic cooktops and says the appliance is intended for household use. Its safety statement reads: “To avoid the risks that are always present when you use an electrical appliance, it is important that the cooktop is installed correctly and that you read the safety instructions carefully to avoid misuse and hazards.” The retailer also says the appliance is not intended or designed for commercial use, so it is not suited to a commercial kitchen.

Review evidence and customer ratings

Three kinds of evidence exist for this model, and they should not be treated as equivalent.

  • Consumer testing (CHOICE). CHOICE’s model page lists the four-element layout and a displayed price of AUD 1,899, and labels the model discontinued. Its Expert Rating, cooking-performance, ease-of-use and high- and low-heat scores are available only to members, so no numeric test verdict is public. The price is the page’s own display, not a current selling price.
  • Manufacturer data. Westinghouse’s specification sheet gives dimensions, zone data, controls and warranty. These are measurements and features, not performance results.
  • Retailer customer ratings. Appliances Online shows an average rating of 4.5 from customer reviews, managed through Bazaarvoice. The retailer notes that vouchers are sometimes offered to verified buyers for reviews. These are customer opinions and should be read with that context, not as lab tests.

Availability

The record is contradictory. CHOICE marks the WHC943BC as discontinued, while Westinghouse’s own cooktop catalogue still lists it as a 90 cm, four-zone ceramic cooktop. Neither source shows current stock levels. Before buying, ask the retailer for stock and delivery dates, and ask Westinghouse’s Australian customer-care team whether the model is still supported and whether spare parts are available. A discontinued model can still be sold from clearance stock, but parts supply may be limited.

Who the WHC943BC suits

The WHC943BC fits a household that wants a built-in ceramic cooktop of a standard 90 cm width, has a bench cut-out that matches the 880 × 490 mm opening, and can accommodate a hardwired circuit. The large front-left zone is useful for big pans. It is a weaker choice if you need fast, induction-style response, if you want a gas or induction cooktop for your cookware, or if you cannot confirm current stock and parts support. Because no independent performance score is public, compare it against current models using the same measurements, wattage and warranty details before deciding.

When comparing it with another cooktop, use these checks:

  • Heating type: ceramic radiant versus induction or gas, and how your current cookware performs on it.
  • Cut-out and electrical requirements, which must match your existing bench and supply.
  • Zone layout and sizes, especially for the cookware you use most.
  • Controls and safety functions, such as the child lock and residual-heat warnings.
  • Warranty, current availability and independent test results for the alternative.

Cooktop reviews by other publications are the best source for independent performance testing, and the consumer-testing body that covers this model keeps its results behind a membership.
