What did the satellite images show before the landslide?
Dave Petley’s 1 October 2026 review compared Planet Labs optical images from 12 August and 25 August, the day before the failure. He described little obvious overall change at first inspection. Shadows, clouds, and other visual effects complicate the comparison, and the 25 August image shows no clear dust plume or deposits.

Possible movement near the crown
Petley identified a possible change in ice near the eventual crown. Because shadows affect the view, this is an interpretation rather than a confirmed measurement of movement.

Possible rockfall and detachment on the midslope
The later image also appears to show more rockfall or detached material on the midslope, with boulders accumulating below. Petley suggested that this could indicate loss of support, or debuttressing, beneath the upper slope and could form part of the failure process. He emphasized that the changes were minor and difficult to distinguish from normal background activity. The imagery’s moderate spatial resolution further limits what can be concluded. Did Sentinel-1 radar detect a precursor?
No robust progressive change was reported in the Sentinel-1 amplitude data. An EarthArXiv preprint summary describes five pre-event observations from 29 June through 16 August 2026, from one relative orbit, compared with 80 terrain-matched control patches.
The analysis reported a nominal VV backscatter decline of −0.20 ± 0.03 dB per cycle (p ≈ 0.02), but that trend was driven entirely by the earliest observation. Excluding that scene, the remaining four dates were essentially flat: +0.01 dB per cycle (p = 0.99). The preprint gives an approximate detection limit of 1 dB of progressive change over two months. This is a limit for that analysis, not a statement that smaller physical movement did not occur.

What happened during the 26 August event?
The Nepal Society for Earthquake Technology (NSET) describes a north-facing slope near the Lhende River in the upper Bhote Koshi watershed, near the China–Nepal border and roughly 20 km upstream of Rasuwagadhi. Its preliminary account says an ice–rock avalanche entrained loose proglacial sediment, then transformed into a mobile, water-laden debris flow and flood. NSET also says the recorded seismic signal near Langtang/Lirung was generated by the mass movement itself, rather than triggering it. Read NSET’s event account.

Do these observations mean the landslide was predictable?
No. The optical changes were identified retrospectively and remain tentative; the radar analysis did not show a robust progressive trend at its stated sensitivity. The cited material does not establish a validated failure mechanism, a real-time recognition threshold, or a warning lead time. A subtle change noticed after an event is not automatically a signal that could have been recognized reliably beforehand.
These records also do not prove that no movement occurred before failure. They show only that the particular optical comparison and Sentinel-1 observations reviewed did not establish a clear, actionable precursor. Petley’s conclusion was that “there were surprisingly few signs of incipient failure,” while still noting the possible localized changes in the images. More evidence would be needed to determine whether those changes were meaningful precursors or ordinary slope activity.
