Partly, according to contemporaneous reporting. At Tesla’s October 10, 2024 “We, Robot” event, employees remotely assisted many Optimus interactions with attendees. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas described the demonstrations as relying on “tele-ops (human intervention).” The available evidence does not show that every movement was remotely controlled, however: reporting said prototypes could walk using AI without external control, while remote staff helped with interactions such as conversation and demonstrations.
What happened at the October 2024 event
TechCrunch reported that people familiar with the event told Bloomberg that Optimus prototypes were able to walk without external control, but that employees stationed elsewhere oversaw many interactions with attendees. The same report quoted Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas describing the robots as having “relied on tele-ops (human intervention).” Futurism reported the same characterization and also separated AI-assisted walking from human-assisted interaction.
Tesla Optimus engineer Milan Kovac acknowledged the assistance publicly, as reported by Axios: “of course they were human assisted to some extent to help showcase our vision of an amazing future.” That statement confirms assistance in general; it does not provide a control-by-control list for every robot or action.
Which capabilities were autonomous, and which were assisted?
| Capability or activity | What the reporting established | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Walking | Sources cited by TechCrunch said prototypes could walk using AI without external control. | The reports do not establish that every walking sequence at the event was autonomous. |
| Conversation and attendee interaction | Remote employees reportedly oversaw many interactions, and Jonas called the demonstrations tele-operated. | No source gives the percentage of conversations or a complete event-wide activity log. |
| Gestures and demonstrations | Human assistance was acknowledged as part of showcasing the concept. | The available accounts do not identify which gestures were scripted, autonomous or directly tele-operated. |
| All robots and all actions | Some or many interactions involved human help. | There is no verified task-by-task accounting and no evidence that every robot was a remotely controlled prop. |
Why the word “dummies” needs qualification
“Dummies” is a pointed headline description, not a recognized engineering classification established by the reporting. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Tesla used human assistance during at least many public interactions while presenting robots that also demonstrated some AI-based capability. Calling the machines wholly nonfunctional or entirely puppeteered goes beyond what the cited accounts show.

How strong is each piece of evidence?
| Source | Type of evidence | What it can support |
|---|---|---|
| TechCrunch (October 14, 2024) | Contemporaneous reporting based partly on sources familiar with the matter | That remote employees assisted many interactions and that sources distinguished AI walking from assisted interaction. |
| Futurism (October 15, 2024) | Contemporaneous reporting and analyst interpretation | That Jonas characterized the demonstrations as relying on tele-operations; it does not independently map every action. |
| Axios (October 2024) | Public acknowledgment attributed to Tesla engineer Milan Kovac | That the robots were “human assisted to some extent.” |
| Tesla’s AI & Robotics page | Official product-goal statement | Tesla’s stated aim to build a general-purpose autonomous humanoid, not proof that the event robots had reached that goal. |
What Tesla says Optimus is supposed to become
Tesla’s official AI & Robotics description says the project is intended to “Create a general purpose, bi-pedal, autonomous humanoid robot capable of performing unsafe, repetitive or boring tasks.” It identifies balance, navigation, perception and interaction with the physical world as software challenges. Those are development goals and company claims, rather than independent verification of the October 2024 demonstrations.
What Elon Musk said later
On Tesla’s August 5, 2026 Q2 earnings call, Elon Musk said: “So you’ve probably seen lots of impressive demonstrations of robots on the Internet, but those demonstrations you’re seeing are preprogrammed or remote controlled.” He also described generalized task performance as a major challenge. This is a broad later comment about robot demonstrations; it should not be treated as a complete technical inventory of what happened at the October 2024 event.

Does the 2026 Virtuix purchase prove anything about the event?
Virtuix announced in July 2026 that Tesla bought an Omni One Enterprise system for the Optimus division and described the platform as capable of supporting teleoperation. That purchase is relevant context for Tesla’s interest in remote-control systems, but it does not identify what equipment controlled robots at “We, Robot” and is not proof that every 2024 demonstration was tele-operated.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The evidence-based answer
Were Tesla’s Optimus robots at “We, Robot” remotely controlled? Human assistance was clearly part of many attendee interactions, and an analyst described the demonstrations as relying on tele-operations. At the same time, reporting said the prototypes could walk with AI without external control. The defensible conclusion is therefore mixed: assisted and possibly tele-operated interactions alongside at least some autonomous or AI-driven behavior, with no public record assigning a control method to every action.
