Yes. Crocodiles lived in the Nile environment of ancient Egypt and held an important place in Egyptian religion and ritual. But the species identity of individual crocodile mummies is more complicated than the familiar label “Nile crocodile”: genetic analyses of mummies from three ancient burial sites identified them as Crocodylus suchus, not Crocodylus niloticus.
Were crocodiles native to ancient Egypt?
Yes. Crocodiles were part of the ancient Nile Valley environment. The Egyptian Museum Cairo describes Nile crocodiles as very common in pharaonic times. Its artifact page calls the objects it displays “Mummies of the big Nile crocodile.” That broad historical presence is distinct from the scientific identification of particular mummies, which has refined how some remains are classified.

The British Museum’s 2016 newsletter describes the ancient Egyptians as fearing and respecting the Nile crocodile, calling it a large, dangerous predator of riverbanks and marshes. The newsletter also says a crocodile mummy excavated by Jacques de Morgan in 1893 was presented to the museum by the Egyptian government in 1895. Read the British Museum newsletter.

Were the crocodile mummies Nile crocodiles?
Not necessarily. A Natural History Museum of Utah account of genetic research reports that mummies from three ancient Egyptian burial sites were identified as Crocodylus suchus. That finding shows why a museum label or general reference to a “Nile crocodile” should not be treated as a genetic identification of every mummy. It does not establish that all crocodile mummies from Egypt were C. suchus, nor does it negate the broader evidence that crocodiles inhabited ancient Egypt.

What did Sobek have to do with crocodiles?
Sobek was a crocodile-associated deity represented either as a crocodile or as a human with a crocodile head. Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities says his worship began in the Old Kingdom and continued into the Greco-Roman period, with major cult centers in the Fayum and at Kom Ombo.
