Some early findings suggest semaglutide and tirzepatide may shift biological-aging markers, but they do not show that weight-loss drugs slow aging in people or extend human lifespan. The newest claims come from drugmaker analyses; the human and animal studies that add context are limited in different ways.
What did the drugmakers report?
An October 6, 2026, report attributed to MIT Technology Review says Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly found lower biological-age readings among people taking GLP-1 medicines than among placebo groups. Novo Nordisk’s semaglutide analyses used protein-based clocks, while Eli Lilly’s tirzepatide research used epigenetic clocks.

The accessible report does not provide enough information about the company analyses’ sample sizes, methods, exact effect estimates, or statistical results to assess or compare them independently. Those findings should therefore be read as company-reported signals, not as established clinical evidence that either medicine slows human aging.

What does a “biological-age” clock measure?
Biological-age clocks use measurable features of the body to estimate aspects of aging. The studies described here include clocks based on DNA methylation, an epigenetic marker, and clocks based on proteins. A clock reading is a biomarker result—not a direct measurement of how long someone will live, and not by itself proof that a person’s health or aging trajectory has changed.

Different clocks capture different biological features and can give different results. Their estimates should not be treated as interchangeable units or compared across studies as if a given number of “years” meant the same thing in every test.
What has a human semaglutide study found?
A peer-reviewed analysis published in Nature Communications examined DNA methylation data from 108 adults with HIV-associated lipohypertrophy who had taken part in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2b semaglutide trial. The treatment and analysis period was 32 weeks.

The parent trial was not designed with biological aging as a prespecified endpoint. Researchers conducted the clock analysis afterward, making it exploratory. Several second- and third-generation epigenetic measures showed lower annualized aging estimates in the semaglutide group than in the placebo group. An intrinsic-capacity clock, however, did not show a statistically significant treatment effect.
That result applies to the biomarkers, analysis, timeframe, and specific study population—not to the general population or to lifespan. It does not establish that the changes persisted or led to better health outcomes.

What did the mouse lifespan study show?
A separate peer-reviewed study in Nature examined semaglutide in aged female C57BL/6 mice. The mice were 20 months old when treatment began. One cohort received treatment for three months for physiological and molecular measurements; a separate lifespan cohort remained on treatment until death.
The authors reported improvements in physical and cognitive measures, changes in aging-associated hallmarks, and longer lifespan. The National Institutes of Health described the median-lifespan difference between treated and untreated mice as nearly 100 days. That figure is an animal-study result, not an estimate of added human life. The study authors say long-term clinical studies are needed to determine whether GLP-1 receptor activation changes aging trajectories or lifespan in people.

What should readers take away?
The findings make biological aging a research question worth studying for GLP-1 medicines, but they do not support using these prescription treatments as anti-aging drugs. The evidence ranges from company-reported clock analyses to an exploratory human biomarker analysis and a lifespan result in mice; none demonstrates that people taking these medicines live longer.
