Website Screenshot Software: APIs, Playwright, and Puppeteer Compared

The best website screenshot software depends on whether you want a managed service or control of the browser yourself. For most developers who need repeatable captures without maintaining browser infrastructure, start with a hosted screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo. Choose Playwright or Puppeteer when screenshots are part of a browser automation workflow you already run and maintain.

For JavaScript-rendered pages, a screenshot tool needs to load the site in a real browser context; a simple image of the URL is not enough. The choice also depends on whether you need a viewport, a selected element, or the whole scrollable page, and on details such as consent dialogs, lazy-loaded images, output format, and authentication.

What website screenshot software does

Website screenshot software loads a URL or supplied HTML and produces an image or document of the rendered page. Developers use it for visual QA, previews, monitoring, documentation, and image generation. When a page depends on JavaScript, responsive layout, fonts, lazy-loaded assets, or interaction state, the software must render it in a browser context to capture what a visitor would see.

There are two broad approaches: use a hosted service that operates the browser for you, or automate a browser through a library such as Playwright or Puppeteer. Hosted services reduce infrastructure work; self-hosted automation offers direct control over browser actions and integration into your own codebase.

Choose a capture mode and output

Viewport, full page, or element

  • Viewport: captures the visible browser area at a chosen width and height. Use it to compare responsive layouts or reproduce what fits on screen.
  • Full page: captures the full scrollable page. This is useful for audits and documentation, but long pages may take longer to render and produce larger files.
  • Element: captures a specific component or section, commonly identified by a CSS selector. This is useful when a whole-page image would include unrelated content.

“Full page” is not the same as “viewport.” Specify the mode explicitly, and verify that lazy-loaded content has appeared before the capture; some pages only load images or sections as the visitor scrolls.

Image or PDF

PNG, JPEG, and WebP are common choices for screenshots. PNG is useful when crisp text and lossless output matter; JPEG can suit photographs and smaller files; WebP is supported by many modern workflows. PDF is preferable when the result should be a document, such as a page record or report. Check that the selected service or library supports the format you need and that downstream systems accept it.

Hosted screenshot APIs: the managed-browser option

A hosted API accepts a request containing a URL or, depending on the service, HTML and rendering options, then returns a screenshot or PDF. You avoid installing and operating the browser workers yourself. This is a practical fit for scheduled capture, a production feature, bulk jobs, or applications where browser infrastructure would distract from the product.

ScreenshotNeo

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its controls include full-page and selector capture, viewport and device presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, cookies and headers, wait conditions, request blocking, caching, bulk capture, asynchronous jobs, and signed links. Cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be handled before capture, with each cleanup step optional. Responses identify page verdict and billing status, and only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing.

Here is a complete cURL request that saves a WebP capture. Replace the key with your API key and change the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The matching Python and Node.js requests are:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer())));

For repeated captures, choose options to fit the page rather than adding every possible control. Use a selector when a component is the target; set a wait condition for delayed content; use viewport or device settings for responsive checks; and add authentication headers or cookies only when the site requires them. Confirm that your application checks the response status and handles non-image verdicts instead of assuming every response is a usable screenshot.

ScreenshotOne

ScreenshotOne is another hosted API. Its documentation describes GET and POST requests, access-key authentication, selector and full-page capture, and image or PDF output. Its product page, accessed September 29, 2026, displayed vendor-reported figures of 3,800+ active developers, 6.6M+ screenshots rendered, and 99.957% uptime over the preceding 30 days; it also displayed 100 free screenshots per month. These are ScreenshotOne’s own figures, not independent benchmarks, and they should not be treated as comparative proof of reliability or speed.

For format breadth, ScreenshotOne’s documentation lists PNG, JPEG/JPG, WebP, GIF, JP2, TIFF, AVIF, HEIF, PDF, HTML, and Markdown response formats. It also documents cookie-banner, ad, and chat blocking; custom CSS and JavaScript; full-page lazy-load handling; SDKs; and integrations with Zapier, Airtable, and Make. Validate the exact options and limits against the current documentation before building around them.

Self-hosted browser automation: Playwright and Puppeteer

Use a browser automation library when screenshot capture is one step in a larger test or application workflow—for example, when you need to log in, interact with controls, inspect page state, and then capture. This gives your code control over the browser session, but your team is responsible for installing and running browser infrastructure, handling failures, and deciding how to scale workers.

Playwright

Playwright’s official screenshot tool can capture a viewport, a specific element, or the full scrollable page. Its documented output formats include PNG, JPEG, and WebP, and it supports selector targets and CSS- or device-pixel scaling. A basic Node.js example using Playwright’s library API is:

import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
try {
  await page.goto('https://stripe.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Install Playwright and its browser binaries in your project environment before running the example. The networkidle wait is useful for many pages, but some sites keep network connections open or load content later; in those cases, wait for a meaningful selector or use a deliberate timeout instead. Playwright’s own tool documentation describes the viewport, element, and full-scrollable-page capture modes.

Puppeteer

Puppeteer is a Chromium-focused browser automation API with an official Page.screenshot method. It fits teams whose Node.js tooling already uses Puppeteer and who want browser control alongside capture. A minimal example is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
  await page.goto('https://stripe.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Install Puppeteer and its compatible browser as part of your application setup. Its Chromium focus is a consideration if your test matrix requires multiple browser engines. Consult the version of the API documentation matching your installed package for current options.

Compare the approaches against your requirements

Approach Best fit Control and operations Important checks
ScreenshotNeo hosted API Managed captures, integrations, batch workflows, or use by AI agents API controls with managed browser rendering; no browser worker to operate Test target pages and desired wait, consent cleanup, output, and authentication settings
ScreenshotOne hosted API Managed rendering with documented formats, integrations, and blocking options API-based; service handles browser infrastructure Check current plan limits, options, and the exact output format required
Playwright Screenshot as part of tests and broader browser automation Code-level control; your team runs and maintains browser setup Install browsers, pick wait conditions, and handle workers and failures
Puppeteer Node.js automation where its Chromium-focused API fits Code-level control; your team runs and maintains browser setup Confirm Chromium coverage is sufficient and manage browser deployment

No independent cross-vendor benchmark establishes which option is fastest or most reliable. Compare candidates using representative pages and your own operating conditions rather than interpreting a provider’s displayed figures as a head-to-head result.

How to evaluate screenshot software

  1. Define the capture contract. Record the target URLs, viewport sizes, capture mode, output format, and whether pages require login or interaction.
  2. Choose representative pages. Include a delayed JavaScript page, a consent dialog, lazy-loaded images, a sticky header, and a long page. Use both desktop and mobile widths if responsive rendering matters.
  3. Run the same cases on each candidate. Keep URLs, dimensions, and expected wait state consistent. For a self-hosted browser, use the same browser version and worker environment across runs.
  4. Inspect completeness and repeatability. Check missing fonts or images, overlays, clipped content, incorrect responsive breakpoints, and whether repeated captures produce the expected state.
  5. Measure the costs that matter to your workflow. Compare elapsed time, file sizes, failure handling, maintenance effort, and the service’s billing rules or your own infrastructure costs. The vendors’ displayed figures do not provide a controlled performance comparison.
  6. Test the recovery path. Simulate a slow or unavailable page and decide whether your application retries, reports a failed capture, or accepts a non-image result.

Common problems and fixes

The screenshot is blank or missing content

The page may not have finished rendering, may require a selector-specific wait, or may have returned a bot check or an error state. Wait for a meaningful element rather than relying only on a fixed delay, and inspect the API verdict or browser logs before treating the output as a valid page capture.

Lazy-loaded images do not appear

Images loaded only when scrolled into view may not exist when the capture begins. Use a full-page capture mode with lazy-load handling where available, or explicitly scroll through the page and wait for images before capturing in your own browser workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A cookie dialog, popup, or chat widget covers the page

Test the page’s consent and overlay behavior directly. A hosted API may provide blocking or cleanup controls; otherwise, use browser automation to interact with the dialog or hide a known selector when you are authorized to do so. Do not mistake removing an overlay for establishing consent on behalf of a visitor unless your workflow actually records that choice.

The capture is clipped or uses the wrong layout

Check the viewport dimensions and whether the API interprets a full-page option separately from viewport capture. Sticky headers, fixed overlays, and responsive breakpoints can change the result. Reproduce the target viewport and compare a viewport shot with a full-page shot to locate the issue.

Navigation hangs or times out

Some pages never become network-idle because they maintain live connections or load tracking requests continuously. Wait for a specific selector or a controlled delay, and set a timeout appropriate to your workflow. Make retries bounded so a slow page does not tie up a worker indefinitely.

The request fails or the saved file is not an image

Check the API key, URL encoding, network response status, and returned content before writing the response to a file. For browser libraries, verify that the browser executable is installed and compatible with the package, and close browser instances in a finally block so failures do not leak processes.

Performance, reliability, and cost

A hosted service avoids your team’s browser-worker operations, but introduces a dependency on an external API and its request limits, billing rules, and behavior. A self-hosted browser offers control and may fit existing test infrastructure, but browser installation, upgrades, concurrency, cleanup, and retries become your responsibility. For either approach, capture size and completion time depend on the page, network, browser environment, and options; do not assume one configuration will perform identically across sites.

ScreenshotNeo’s published pricing is Free: 1,000 captures a month with no card; Starter: $5 for 3,000; Growth: $15 for 15,000; Pro: $39 for 60,000; Scale: $99 for 250,000; Business: $249 for 1,000,000. Frequently Asked Questions

Can screenshot software capture a page after JavaScript runs?

Yes. Use a browser-rendering API or browser automation library, then wait for the relevant page state before capture; a plain URL fetch may not include rendered content.

Can I screenshot a page that requires login?

Many tools support authenticated browser workflows; hosted API options may include cookies or headers, while Playwright and Puppeteer can automate a session. Confirm the specific implementation and avoid exposing credentials in logs.

Which approach is best for AI agents?

A service with an MCP server can expose screenshot operations directly to MCP-compatible clients; ScreenshotNeo provides that option.
