Website Hero Image Guidelines for Responsive Design

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A responsive hero image needs more than a large desktop file: it needs a crop that works on small screens, responsive image sources, reserved layout space, accessible text, and careful loading priority. For many sites, 1920×1080 is a practical full-size starting point, but the right crop and delivered file depend on the actual hero component and viewport.

Choose a source image that can survive the crop

A hero is often a wide, high-impact image behind or beside introductory content. The U.S. National Science Foundation describes it as functioning more like wallpaper than a detail image: it should establish mood or context without requiring the viewer to inspect a small, precise feature. Its current author-tools guidance recommends a width-to-height ratio of at least 1.7:1, with 1920×1080 as its preferred full-size image and 1366×768 as an alternate. Both examples are 16:9.

Those are useful source-image dimensions, not a guarantee that a particular image will look right at every screen size. A hero container can have a different aspect ratio, and a cover crop discards part of the source. Keep the important subject near the center or otherwise inside the area likely to remain visible. Avoid placing a face, product, or other essential detail at an edge or beneath the headline and call to action.

Plan for the narrowest important crop

Start with the mobile composition, not just the desktop mockup. A wide image that works on a large screen may lose its subject when a tall phone-sized container crops its sides. If the subject is essential to understanding the page, create a separate mobile crop and use art direction with a <picture> element. If it is decorative or atmospheric, a single crop-safe source may be enough.

Review the image behind the actual headline and CTA, not in isolation. Check that the crop retains its intended focal point and that the text area is not busy or low-contrast. A gradient or solid overlay can help, but it should not obscure the subject or make the composition depend on a single viewport.

Choose between an image element and a CSS background

Use an HTML <img> when the image conveys content that should have an accessible text alternative, or when responsive image selection and browser discovery matter. Use a CSS background for imagery that is purely decorative and belongs to the presentation of a component. The choice affects accessibility, cropping control, and how conveniently the browser can discover and prioritize the image.

Approach Best fit Trade-offs
<img> with object-fit: cover A meaningful image, a responsive srcset, or a hero that should be discoverable as an image. Provide suitable alt text when the image is meaningful, or an empty alt value when it is decorative. The container may crop the image.
CSS background-image A purely decorative visual that sits behind HTML content. No alt attribute exists for a CSS background. Responsive sources and early discovery may need extra care.
<picture> with an <img> fallback Different crops for mobile and desktop, or format alternatives with a fallback. More image variants and markup to generate and maintain; make sure the fallback remains usable.

For an image element, CSS object-fit: cover fills the box while preserving the image ratio, cropping the overflow. object-position lets you shift which part remains visible. object-fit: contain shows the entire image but may leave empty space in the box. Choose based on whether a complete image or a filled hero area matters more.

Keep hero copy accessible and readable

Keep the headline, supporting text, and CTA in HTML rather than baking them into the image. HTML text remains selectable, zoomable, localizable, and available when the image crop changes. The National Science Foundation warns: “Text in an image, except for pure decoration, creates accessibility issues.” WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.9 likewise limits images of text to cases such as pure decoration or an essential presentation.

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

For a meaningful <img>, use concise alt text that states the image’s subject and relevance to the page. Do not repeat the headline in the alt text. If the hero image adds no information beyond the HTML content, use alt=""; if it is purely decorative and can be expressed as styling, a CSS background is also appropriate.

Text contrast must hold across the crop, not only over the desktop focal point. Use a stable overlay or a layout that places copy on a reliably quiet part of the image, and verify it at narrow widths. Also check keyboard focus indicators on links and buttons over the image; focus must remain visible against the background.

Deliver image bytes appropriate to each screen

Do not send every visitor the same oversized desktop asset if smaller variants will look sharp at their rendered size. Generate several widths and let the browser choose with srcset and sizes. The width descriptors in srcset describe the candidate files; sizes tells the browser how wide the image is expected to render under the page’s layout conditions.

This example offers AVIF, WebP, and JPEG candidates. Adjust sizes to the hero’s real component width: 100vw is suitable only when the image actually spans the viewport.

       width="1920" height="1080"
       alt="Descriptive subject of the hero image"
       fetchpriority="high">
</picture>

Use the actual component width in sizes when the hero sits in a constrained container—for example, a suitable media condition followed by the container’s maximum width. If you omit sizes with width-descriptor srcset, Chrome guidance says the browser assumes 100vw, which can lead to downloading the largest candidate unnecessarily. Keep a real fallback src in the <img>; Google Search Central recommends a fallback because some browsers and crawlers may not understand responsive source attributes.

Where the delivery stack supports it, AVIF or WebP can reduce image bytes, with JPEG or PNG as a fallback. Modern formats are only part of the work: responsive sizing and layout stability matter too. Generate candidate widths that cover actual rendered sizes and high-density screens; producing many near-identical files adds maintenance without necessarily improving the result.

Art direction for a different mobile composition

When the mobile version needs a different crop, use a media condition on a <source>. The final <img> remains the fallback and carries the alt text and intrinsic dimensions.

<picture>
  <source media="(max-width: 600px)"
          srcset="hero-mobile-720.webp">
  <img src="hero-desktop-1920.jpg"
       width="1920" height="1080"
       alt="Descriptive subject of the hero image"
       fetchpriority="high">
</picture>

A single mobile file is simple, but a mobile srcset can offer multiple widths when the delivery pipeline supports it. Test the breakpoint and crop where the composition actually changes; a breakpoint should reflect the image and layout, not an arbitrary device label.

Reserve space to avoid layout shift

Give the fallback image intrinsic width and height attributes, or reserve the component’s shape with CSS aspect-ratio. The browser can then allocate space before the image downloads, reducing layout movement as the page renders. The specified dimensions describe the source ratio; CSS can still size the displayed image responsively.

.hero__image {
  display: block;
  max-inline-size: 100%;
  inline-size: 100%;
  block-size: auto;
}

.hero__media {
  aspect-ratio: 16 / 9;
  overflow: hidden;
}

.hero__media img {
  inline-size: 100%;
  block-size: 100%;
  object-fit: cover;
  object-position: center;
}

Use a ratio that matches the design at the relevant breakpoint; a mobile hero may need a taller ratio or a different source. Do not rely on a late-loading image to establish the layout height. When the image is inside a responsive component, ensure the reserved box and chosen crop agree at each size.

Load the visible hero without delaying it

A hero visible at the top of the page is a likely candidate for the Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) image. Do not set loading="lazy" on an above-the-fold hero. web.dev’s guidance is direct: “For a hero image above the fold, don’t use loading.” If a framework automatically lazy-loads images, override that behavior for the visible hero.

For a genuinely critical image, fetchpriority="high" can signal that it should be prioritized. Use it selectively: elevating one request can deprioritize another. Do not mark every image or asset high priority.

A CSS background can be harder for the browser to discover early than an image in HTML. Consider a preload only when the background is truly critical and the exact URL is known. Do not preload every responsive variant or multiple alternative formats: unnecessary preloads can trigger downloads the browser will not use. Verify the actual network requests before adding preload hints.

Lazy loading is appropriate for images below the fold, not for the initial visible hero. For performance, inspect the selected file and transfer size on both a narrow phone and a desktop; the browser should not have to fetch a desktop-sized original for a small rendered image.

Validate the hero across viewports and zoom

Responsive fitting is not proven by a single desktop preview. W3C Technique C37 describes testing image fitting at 400% zoom, while WCAG 2.2 Reflow (1.4.10) calls for ordinary content to work at a 320 CSS-pixel width equivalent without two-dimensional scrolling, subject to the documented exceptions. Use these as concrete checks for the hero and surrounding content.

  1. Inspect a wide desktop: confirm the image fills its intended area, the focal subject is visible, and the headline and CTA remain readable.
  2. Inspect a narrow phone: check the crop, overlay, text wrapping, and whether the mobile art-directed source is selected where intended.
  3. Check a high-density phone: inspect sharpness and confirm the responsive candidate is appropriate to the rendered width.
  4. Zoom text to 400% and check narrow reflow: look for horizontal scrolling, clipped text, hidden controls, or a hero that pushes essential content out of view.
  5. Use the keyboard: move focus through interactive content over the hero and check that focus indicators remain visible.
  6. Simulate a slow connection: confirm the image does not leave a large empty area, shift the page when it arrives, or delay useful content unnecessarily.
  7. Inspect the network and layout: verify which source file loaded, whether the fallback works, and whether the reserved image ratio prevents layout movement.

Common responsive hero problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
The subject disappears on a phone. A wide desktop image is being cover-cropped into a taller box, or the focal point sits near an edge. Adjust object-position, move the subject into a safer area, or provide a mobile-specific crop with <picture>.
The hero looks soft or pixelated on a large or high-density screen. The selected candidate is too small for the rendered dimensions and pixel density. Offer an appropriately larger srcset candidate and inspect the browser’s selection.
A phone downloads the largest file. sizes is missing or describes a wider rendered image than the component actually uses. Set sizes to match the real layout, including container limits and media conditions.
Content jumps when the image appears. No intrinsic dimensions or aspect-ratio reservation was provided. Add width and height to the fallback image or reserve the intended ratio in CSS.
The first screen’s main image appears late. The visible hero was lazy-loaded, deprioritized, or hidden in a background the browser discovers late. Remove lazy loading from the visible hero, consider selective fetch priority, and evaluate a preload only for a known critical background URL.
Text is hard to read after the crop changes. The copy is placed over a visually busy or variable part of the image. Move copy to a stable area, strengthen the overlay, or change the crop while keeping copy as HTML.
The full hero creates horizontal scrolling at zoom. The image or its container exceeds the available inline space, or fixed dimensions prevent reflow. Constrain the image with responsive sizing such as max-inline-size: 100% and review the layout at narrow widths.

Use ScreenshotNeo to review rendered hero crops

Browser testing remains the right way to check interaction, keyboard focus, zoom, and network behavior. A screenshot can supplement those checks by making it easy to compare how the hero renders at different viewport sizes or after a deployment. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; its API can capture a page as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an API capture, create an access key and use the API endpoint documented at ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of a page; change the target URL to your deployed page.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python equivalent:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js equivalent:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

The examples request a page capture; they do not configure particular viewport sizes or test accessibility. Use the documented API options to set the capture conditions you need, and treat screenshots as visual review evidence rather than a substitute for the zoom, keyboard, and slow-connection checks above.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot, and each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
