Website Building Software: How to Choose the Right Platform in 2026

The right website-building software depends on what you are making and how much control you want: hosted builders bundle editing, templates and hosting; design-focused platforms offer more customization; and self-hosted WordPress gives you more operational responsibility. For an online store, compare commerce tools and fees as carefully as the editor. For a portfolio or small business site, prioritize ease of editing, design and ongoing cost.

How to choose website building software

Start with the job the site needs to do, then compare what each platform makes you manage. A low-friction hosted builder may suit a portfolio or service-business site; a store with inventory and shipping needs deeper commerce features; a self-hosted content management system may fit someone who wants to choose their own host and maintain the site.

  • Purpose: Is it a brochure site, portfolio, blog or content-heavy site, or online store?
  • Commerce: Do you need to sell products or services, take payments, manage inventory and shipping, or account for transaction charges?
  • Design control: Would templates and drag-and-drop editing be enough, or do you need finer customization?
  • Operations: Who handles hosting, security, updates and maintenance?
  • Extensibility: Which integrations, apps or plugins are available, and do they add cost?
  • Portability: How easily can you move your domain, content or products if your needs change?
  • Total cost: Add the subscription, required upgrades, paid extensions, payment processing and transaction fees.

Which type of platform fits your site?

Hosted, template-led builders

These commonly combine an editor, templates, hosting and integrations in one service. They reduce the need to arrange hosting separately, though features may be gated by plan and add-ons or transaction fees can increase the bill. Shopify’s 2026 comparison characterizes Squarespace as template-led, with commerce features, and Wix as an option for small businesses and portfolios as well as simpler ecommerce. These are the publisher’s descriptions, not results of an independent hands-on ranking.

Design-oriented builders

A platform focused on design customization may suit a site where layout and visual control matter more than a simple template workflow. Shopify’s 2026 comparison describes Webflow this way and notes that its site and ecommerce plans are separate structures. Check Webflow’s current plan inclusions and prices against the features your project needs.

Content management systems

WordPress is a content management system with a broad plugin ecosystem. The open-source WordPress software can be downloaded and hosted separately; that route means arranging a web host and maintaining security and the rest of the site. WordPress.com is a distinct hosted subscription route. Plugins can add functions such as ecommerce, but may also add setup work or cost.

How the main options differ

The table summarizes Shopify’s descriptions in its comparison published August 28, 2026. It is not an independent product test. Price ranges and template counts below are the figures reported in that article; they are dated snapshots, may change, and should not be treated as current quotes or guaranteed plan inclusions.

Platform Best-fit description in Shopify’s 2026 comparison Reported monthly plan range Reported theme or template count Practical consideration
Shopify Ecommerce-oriented, with store themes, payment processing, selling tools and app integrations $5–$399 per month 1,200 themes Check the relevant plan, billing terms, apps and transaction or payment charges.
WordPress CMS with a broad plugin ecosystem; comparison also lists WordPress.com plans WordPress.com: $9–$70 per month 20,000 themes These are WordPress.com comparison figures; self-hosted WordPress has separate hosting and maintenance costs.
Wix Individuals and small businesses creating portfolios or simpler stores; ecommerce on higher tiers $17–$159 per month 2,000 templates Confirm the tier required for commerce and the current transaction terms.
Squarespace Template-led builder with drag-and-drop editing, ecommerce and business tools $25–$99 per month 200 templates Its own pages describe included hosting and security; check migration scope for your content.
Webflow No-code builder associated with design customization; separate site and ecommerce plan structures $15–$2,500 per month 7,000 templates Verify the current plan structure, inclusions and prices directly with Webflow.

All five sets of numbers are attributed to Shopify’s 2026 comparison, which has a commercial interest in ecommerce software. They are useful as a dated orientation, not as a neutral market study or a like-for-like cost comparison. Plan contents differ, and the table does not establish what any particular project will pay.

Which website maker is best for each use case?

For a product-focused online store

Start by comparing ecommerce depth: product and service sales, payments, inventory, shipping, app integrations and transaction charges. Shopify’s comparison positions Shopify as ecommerce-oriented; it describes Wix and Squarespace as offering commerce in broader site-building contexts. That distinction is a starting point, not a universal verdict: match the tools and fees to your actual selling workflow.

For a portfolio or small-business site

Favor an editor you can comfortably update, a design that fits your work, and a plan whose included features cover the site you intend to publish. Wix and Squarespace are described in the 2026 comparison as options for portfolios and small businesses; Squarespace’s own pages call its service an all-in-one website builder and CMS. These descriptions come from the vendors, so verify functionality and terms before committing.

For a blog or site with substantial content

Consider how you will organize and maintain content, what integrations you need, and whether you want a hosted service or the responsibility of separate hosting. WordPress offers a plugin-based route, but distinguish WordPress.com’s hosted subscription from self-hosting the open-source software. The latter gives you responsibility for choosing a host and maintaining security.

When design control is the priority

Compare the actual editing workflow and plan boundaries rather than relying on labels such as “customizable.” Shopify’s comparison characterizes Webflow as design-customizable, but its separate site and ecommerce structures mean you should check which plan supports your intended site and selling features.

What should a website cost?

There is no single useful price without a defined platform, region, billing period and feature set. Shopify’s August 28, 2026 comparison lists monthly ranges, but those figures are a publisher-reported snapshot and plan names, prices and inclusions can change. Treat them as a prompt to check current vendor terms, not as a quote.

Build a realistic total by adding the plan to any necessary upgrades, apps or plugins, payment processing and transaction fees. A low entry price may not cover the feature you need; a higher plan may bundle tools that would otherwise be separate. Compare the total for your own requirements, not just the headline subscription.

Hosting, security and migration

With many hosted builders, hosting is part of the service; with self-hosted WordPress, you arrange the web host and maintain security. Squarespace says its subscription includes hosting and security. That is the vendor’s description, and it does not remove the need to review the service’s current terms and your own account responsibilities.

Moving an existing site is not necessarily an all-or-nothing transfer. Squarespace describes importing or migrating content and products from other platforms, including WordPress and Shopify, but scope can vary by source platform and content type. Before choosing a platform for a replacement site, identify what must move—such as pages, posts, images, products or customer data—and confirm what the vendor’s process supports.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Write down the site’s primary job. Separate must-haves for a portfolio, content site or store from features you may never use.
  2. Set the operating model. Decide whether you want a hosted service to provide hosting or are prepared to arrange hosting and handle maintenance yourself.
  3. Test the editing approach. Check whether templates and drag-and-drop editing provide enough control, or whether your design needs point toward a more customizable platform.
  4. Map the commerce workflow. List products or services, payment needs, inventory, shipping and integrations, then check which plan includes each requirement.
  5. Calculate the recurring total. Include the plan, required upgrades, extensions, payment processing and any transaction charges; confirm current billing terms with the provider.
  6. Plan for a future move. Confirm how the domain, content and products can be transferred and whether the migration route covers the material you need.
