Website Broken Image Checker: Find, Fix, and Verify Missing Images

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A website broken image checker crawls your pages, requests each image URL, and reports the response it receives—usually alongside the source page that references it. Start by recording the image URL, HTTP status, and affected pages; then verify the result from a normal browser before changing code. A 404 often means a file was moved or deleted, while 403, 429, and 5xx responses usually require access, rate-limit, or server troubleshooting rather than replacing the image.

What a broken-image checker actually tells you

Most checkers identify image files that return a 4xx or 5xx response to their crawler. The report should include the requested image URL and, ideally, every page where that URL appears. A page-level report may instead say that a page links to an image returning an error.

This is evidence about one crawler request at one point in time—not a guarantee that every visitor sees a missing image. Your firewall, CDN, authentication rules, geographic routing, user-agent checks, or request rate can produce a different result for a browser or another crawler. Confirm important findings from the same environment your users access.

Why images break

Moved, renamed, or deleted files

A redesign may move /images/hero.jpg to /assets/hero.webp while old HTML, CSS, feeds, or content-management-system fields still reference the former path. A typo in the filename, extension, capitalization, or URL encoding has the same effect. If deletion was accidental, restore the file at its old URL or update all references to its valid new URL.

403 Forbidden

A 403 means the server refused the request. Check hotlink protection, directory permissions, authentication, IP allowlists, robots or firewall rules, and CDN security settings. Do not treat a crawler-only 403 as proof that the file is missing; test the URL while logged out and from the relevant network.

429 Too Many Requests

A 429 indicates rate limiting. Slow the audit, reduce concurrent requests, allow the crawler in your security system, or ask the host for an appropriate limit. Repeating a fast crawl can create more 429 responses without fixing the image.

5xx server errors

500, 502, 503, and 504 responses indicate server-side trouble, an unavailable upstream, or a timeout. Check application and web-server logs, origin health, CDN status, and image-processing services. Retry after the service is healthy, then rerun the crawl.

Bot checks and conditional delivery

Some sites serve a challenge, blank response, or different asset to automated clients. Compare request headers, cookies, geographic location, and authentication between the checker and a browser. A JavaScript-rendered page can also hide image references from a simple HTML crawler.

A repeatable broken-image investigation

  1. Capture the report. Save the exact image URL, status code, timestamp, source page, and whether the checker rendered JavaScript or checked external hosts.
  2. Open the image directly. Test the URL in a private browser window, then inspect the response in developer tools. Check redirects, final URL, content type, and whether an access prompt appears.
  3. Inspect every source. Search templates, Markdown, CSS, structured data, XML feeds, database fields, and JavaScript for the old URL. One stale reference can affect many pages.
  4. Classify the response. Treat 404 and similar missing-file responses as path or deletion problems; investigate 403 as access control, 429 as rate limiting, and 5xx as infrastructure trouble.
  5. Choose the smallest safe repair. Restore an accidentally removed file, update references to the correct URL, or remove an intentionally retired image reference. Preserve the old URL when practical if external pages may still use it.
  6. Test variants. Check HTTP and HTTPS, trailing-slash behavior where relevant, uppercase/lowercase paths on case-sensitive hosts, responsive image candidates such as srcset, and signed or expiring URLs.
  7. Rerun the relevant crawl. Verify the source-page report and the image response after caches and deployments have settled. Keep the original and corrected reports for change tracking.

How to check a site with common tools

Ahrefs Site Audit

Ahrefs documents an “Image broken” issue for image files returning 4xx or 5xx responses and a related issue for pages linking to those images. Review both the image URL and affected pages. Its crawl settings can enable on-demand external-link checking; confirm that external checks are enabled if off-site images matter. A crawler block or high crawl speed can change the result, so interpret 403 and 429 findings separately from missing files.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Screaming Frog describes finding broken links and server errors, filtering by response code, and exporting crawl data with source context. Its desktop crawler has a free limit of 500 URLs; larger sites require a paid license. JavaScript rendering is available after execution, which can expose image references created by client-side code. Decide whether the site fits the URL limit, whether rendering is needed, and which response-code and image columns you will export before crawling.

Ahrefs Broken Link Checker

Ahrefs also offers a browser-based checker for inbound and outbound broken links and advertises a browser extension. The documented material does not establish it as a complete, image-specific crawl of your own site. Use it for broad link discovery, but choose an image-aware site crawl when you need every image URL and source page.

What to compare when choosing a checker

Capability Why it matters
Image-specific reporting Separates failed image files from ordinary anchor links and shows the requested URL.
Source-page context Lets you fix every page that still references the asset.
Crawl scope Defines whether subdomains, external hosts, staging areas, feeds, and authenticated sections are included.
External-link checks Important when images are hosted on a CDN or another domain; verify that the feature is enabled.
JavaScript rendering Needed when scripts insert img elements, lazy-load URLs, or build responsive sources after execution.
Response and export detail Status, redirect chain, content type, source URL, and CSV/API export make repairs auditable.
Rate and access controls Adjustable speed, custom user agent, authentication, and allowlisting reduce false positives.

Fix patterns by symptom

404, 410, or another missing-file response

  • Locate the intended replacement and update the source reference.
  • If the deletion was accidental, restore the file at the old path.
  • If the image is retired, remove the reference and any empty containers or CSS backgrounds.
  • Check generated thumbnails and cached HTML so the old URL is not reintroduced.

403 or a browser-only difference

  • Review hotlink protection, CDN rules, firewall events, and file permissions.
  • Permit the legitimate audit user agent only when you understand its identity and security implications.
  • Test logged-out, logged-in, and geographic variants if delivery is conditional.

429

  • Lower concurrency and crawl speed.
  • Increase the interval between repeated audits.
  • Coordinate an allowlist or rate limit with the host rather than disabling protection globally.

5xx or intermittent failures

  • Correlate timestamps with origin and CDN logs.
  • Check storage, image-transformation workers, database dependencies, and timeout limits.
  • Retry after remediation and watch for recurrence instead of marking the URL fixed after one successful request.

Reliability, rendering, and cost considerations

Large sites need a crawl plan. Segment by sitemap, template, host, or deployment, and schedule slower recurring checks. A fast audit can trigger 429 responses; a JavaScript-rendered audit uses more resources but may discover lazy-loaded images that HTML-only crawling misses. External images can fail independently of your server, so record the external host and its response.

For a single URL or an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

Use the documented API examples at ScreenshotNeo documentation. Replace the target URL as needed.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, device and viewport controls, dark mode, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, PDF output, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify migration. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

FAQ

Can a checker prove that visitors see a broken image?

No. It proves what that crawler received at its crawl time. Confirm the URL from a normal browser and consider access rules, geography, cookies, and request rate.

Should I replace every image reported with a 4xx?

No. First distinguish a missing file from a 403 access refusal, 429 rate limit, or 5xx server failure. The appropriate repair differs for each response.

Do JavaScript-heavy sites need a rendered crawl?

Often. If scripts create or lazy-load image elements, an HTML-only crawler may never discover those URLs. Use rendering when the audit scope requires post-execution content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I repeat the check?

Run it after migrations, media-library changes, template releases, and CDN or firewall changes, then schedule a slower recurring crawl sized to your host’s rate limits.
