Safari screenshot extensions let you capture either the visible part of a webpage or, where supported, the full page as an image or PDF. The right choice depends on the Apple device you use, the export format and editing tools you need, and whether the page is too long or complex for a reliable capture. This guide compares the specific extensions surfaced here and explains how to troubleshoot site permissions. App Store features and compatibility can change, so check each current listing before installing.
What a webpage screenshot extension for Safari does
A Safari screenshot extension is software that adds capture tools to Safari; it is not a physical device. Apple says Safari extensions enhance and customize Safari on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and distributes them through the App Store Extensions category, where Apple reviews them. An extension may offer a capture of only the visible viewport, a full-page capture, or both.
These modes solve different needs. Visible-area capture saves what is on screen at that moment. Full-page capture is intended to include content beyond the current viewport in one output. Do not assume that “full page” means unlimited length or that every page will render perfectly: long, image-heavy, or otherwise complex pages can hit practical limits.

#1 Best Overall
| Extension | Capture and export claims | Editing, processing, and stated limits |
|---|---|---|
| FullPage Screenshot for Safari | Full-page and visible-area capture; PNG download and PDF export | Built-in image editor. Its listing states “No data collection”; that is the listing’s privacy statement, not an independent audit. |
| Screenshot | Web | Full-page long capture | Listing describes local on-device processing and advertises a maximum length of 40,000 pixels. It warns that very long pages at high quality may break because of Safari memory limits. The 40,000-pixel figure is this product’s claim, not a general Safari limit or independent test result. |
| Page Screenshot for Safari | Full-website and visible-area captures; JPEG export | Listing warns that scaling and previewing JPEG captures on a computer can cause pixelation. The developer says the extension accesses webpages to do its job and says it does not collect or transmit browser information; these are developer-provided disclosures. |
Compare the options against your actual workflow:
- Capture mode: Check that the listing explicitly offers full-page capture if you need content below the fold. Visible-area capture is useful for a specific viewport or a quick record of what is on screen.
- Output: PNG and PDF are advertised by FullPage Screenshot for Safari; JPEG is advertised by Page Screenshot for Safari. Those formats are not universal across extensions.
- Editing: FullPage Screenshot for Safari advertises a built-in image editor. The listings cited here do not establish equivalent editing tools for the other two.
- Long pages: Screenshot | Web’s listing specifically warns of possible failures on very long, high-quality captures. Its advertised 40,000-pixel maximum should not be treated as a Safari-wide capability guarantee.
- Privacy and processing: Read the current developer disclosure and distinguish a product listing’s statement from an independent audit. Screenshot | Web describes local processing; the other statements in the table are likewise attributed to their listing or developer.
- Device support: Confirm the current listing’s supported devices and minimum operating-system version. The information summarized here does not establish the current compatibility requirements for each extension.
How to install and capture a webpage
Exact menus can vary by device and OS version, so use the extension’s current App Store instructions for installation and activation. Once it is available in Safari, the usual workflow is:
- Choose an extension in the App Store. Verify supported Apple platforms, required OS version, capture modes, export formats, and the developer’s privacy disclosure on the current listing.
- Install and enable it in Safari. Follow Apple’s on-device extension settings and the extension’s setup prompts. If Safari asks for website access, grant only the access appropriate to the sites where you intend to capture.
- Open the target webpage and wait for it to finish loading. If content appears as you scroll, allow it to load before choosing full-page capture. A capture tool cannot guarantee that every site’s dynamically loaded content will be included.
- Open the extension from Safari’s toolbar or extension controls. Choose full-page capture for content extending below the viewport, or visible-area capture when you need only the currently displayed portion.
- Review the result and export it. Select an available format such as PNG, PDF, or JPEG according to the extension. Keep the original output if you plan to edit or resize it; scaled JPEG previews can look pixelated, as Page Screenshot for Safari’s listing cautions.
When full-page capture fails or looks wrong
Safari page access is a frequent cause of a feature working on one website but not another. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the extension’s website access permissions and allowed domain patterns when a web extension behaves differently across pages.
Rank #2
The extension does not work on a particular website
- Open Safari’s extension settings and check whether the extension is permitted on that site. If it uses a domain allowlist, confirm the site’s domain matches the allowed pattern.
- Return to the webpage and try the capture again after granting the relevant access.
- If the extension still fails, check its current App Store listing or developer instructions for site-specific limitations; the sources summarized here do not establish universal compatibility across websites.
The full-page image is incomplete or capture breaks
- Try the extension’s visible-area mode to determine whether the problem is specific to full-page capture.
- For a very long page or a high-quality capture, try a shorter section or a lower-quality setting if the extension offers one. Screenshot | Web’s listing warns that very long pages at high quality can break due to Safari memory limits.
- Wait for the page’s visible content to load before capturing. A page that loads content gradually may not be fully represented in a single capture.
The exported image looks pixelated
Check whether you are viewing a scaled preview rather than the original file. Page Screenshot for Safari’s listing notes that scaling and previewing JPEG captures on a computer can cause pixelation. If the extension offers another format, consider whether it better suits your editing and sharing needs; format availability varies by product.
Build a Safari web extension or use the platform snapshot API?
For developers who need to create their own Safari extension rather than install one, Apple describes a Safari web extension as part of a macOS or iOS app extension. Apple’s guide covers the manifest, scripts, and toolbar popup files, and says an Xcode project can target both platforms or either one. Apple also documents a WebKit API that takes a snapshot of the current webpage as an image in a web extension context. That establishes a platform-level capability, not that every third-party extension uses that API or produces identical results.

For an installed extension that is failing on a site, Apple’s extension troubleshooting guidance covers access permissions and allowed domains.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot from code rather than inside Safari, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot handling accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
Example cURL request (replace the URL if needed):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. One thousand screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Choosing between a Safari extension and a screenshot API
Use a Safari extension when you want to capture a page while browsing on an Apple device, review it immediately, and use the extension’s built-in export or editing features. Choose a programmatic service when captures need to be requested from code or an AI agent rather than manually in Safari. These are different workflows: an API is not an App Store extension, and installing an extension does not create an automated capture endpoint.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Safari have a built-in full-page screenshot extension?
Safari extensions are separate software distributed through the App Store Extensions category; Apple reviews them. The options described above are third-party extensions, not a claim that Safari itself includes one of them.
Best Value
Can I use the same Safari extension on iPhone, iPad, and Mac?
Not necessarily. Apple’s developer guide allows a Safari web extension project to target macOS, iOS, or both, but you must check the specific extension’s current listing for supported devices and OS versions.
