Start with npx wdio config, add browser capabilities in wdio.conf.js, and run the generated configuration with npx wdio run ./wdio.conf.js. Capabilities select the browser session; the driver or remote service must also be available to launch it.
What cross-browser testing means in WebdriverIO
Cross-browser testing checks whether the same user-visible behavior works across the browser environments your users need. In WebdriverIO, a capability describes a requested WebDriver session, including fields such as browser name, version, and platform. Add multiple capabilities to test the same specs in multiple environments. Browser-specific and cloud-provider options may extend the standard fields, so check the documentation for the driver or provider you use.
WebdriverIO’s WebDriver Protocol supports cross-browser automation. Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) is specific to Chromium-based automation and should not be treated as a substitute for testing other browser engines. See WebdriverIO’s explanation of its protocols and the capabilities reference.
Set up a WebdriverIO project
- Install a supported Node.js runtime for the WebdriverIO release you intend to use. The documentation sources do not establish one universal current Node.js/browser compatibility matrix, so check the release-specific requirements before pinning versions.
- In the project directory, start the official configuration wizard:
npx wdio config. - Choose the test framework and runner options that fit the project. WebdriverIO documents integrations for Mocha, Jasmine, and Cucumber.js; install the relevant framework adapter alongside WebdriverIO. See Frameworks.
- Review the generated
wdio.conf.js, especiallyspecs,framework,capabilities, and framework options such asmochaOpts,jasmineOpts, orcucumberOpts. - Run the suite with
npx wdio run ./wdio.conf.js. To run one spec, use the documented--specoption, for examplenpx wdio run ./wdio.conf.js --spec example.e2e.js. See Getting Started and Configuration.
Configure browser capabilities
For local testing, define one capability per browser you want to launch. This representative configuration requests Chrome and Firefox sessions; exact browser options depend on your installed drivers and WebdriverIO release.

Use the capability options documented for the browser and execution environment you actually use. WebdriverIO validates user-defined capabilities against the WebDriver specification and reports invalid ones early. Browser-specific fields and remote-provider extensions are not interchangeable; consult the capabilities documentation before copying options between browsers or providers.
Headless mode
The WebdriverIO capabilities guide gives headless examples for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, while noting that Safari does not support headless mode in the described setup. Headless availability and flags can vary by browser version and environment. Browser Runner has separate behavior: in CI it enables headless mode by default when its CI variable is 1 or true. Do not assume Browser Runner defaults apply to local-runner end-to-end tests. See Capabilities and Runner.

Write and run an end-to-end spec
A spec should assert a behavior meaningful to a user, not merely that a page loaded. In a WDIO runner test, use the active session’s browser object (or driver, depending on setup); do not mix this runner style with the standalone API, where remote returns a browser object.
describe('search', () => {
it('shows results for a search term', async () => {
await browser.url('https://webdriver.io');
await $('[name="search"]').setValue('capabilities');
await browser.keys('Enter');
await expect($('.search-result')).toBeDisplayed();
});
});
This example assumes the target page exposes the selectors shown; substitute stable selectors and assertions from your own application. Keep the same spec under the configured capability list: the local runner creates browser sessions for the capabilities and executes the suite in those environments. The Browser Object reference describes the session API.

Run against local or remote browsers
Local execution
For local execution, install and configure the browser and compatible driver required by your setup. The WDIO local runner starts the test framework in worker processes and creates sessions for the configured capabilities. Local runs are useful for quick feedback, but only cover browsers and operating systems available on that machine.
Remote WebDriver execution
To test other operating systems, browser versions, or hosted browser environments, configure the WebDriver connection and any provider service required by that endpoint. Keep standard WebDriver fields separate from provider-specific capability extensions. The names and required values vary by service; WebdriverIO documentation recognizes vendor extensions but does not make one provider’s settings portable to another. Check the provider’s current instructions alongside Organizing Test Suite.

Control parallelism and test capacity
WebdriverIO can run specs in parallel, but the practical limit is the number of browser sessions your machine, grid, or hosted service can support. Set global maxInstances and, where needed, a per-capability instance limit to keep load within capacity. A grid with uneven browser capacity may need tighter limits for some capabilities than others. More concurrency can shorten elapsed time while increasing CPU, memory, and provider usage; begin with a limit your environment can sustain, then adjust based on observed stability and available capacity. See Organizing Test Suite.
Choose the right runner for the test scope
The local runner is typically the route for end-to-end workflows: it starts the framework in workers and operates browser sessions through WebDriver. The Browser Runner is a different setup for unit and component tests executed inside an actual browser; it uses Vite to load a test harness. It is not simply a switch that multiplies an existing end-to-end suite across arbitrary capabilities. See Runner and Component Testing.

Choose the runner according to the question each test answers: use end-to-end tests for integrated user flows, and browser-based component tests when the component’s behavior in a real browser is the target.
Common problems and fixes
- Capability rejected before a session starts: check spelling, value types, standard WebDriver fields, and browser-specific namespaces against the capability reference. Remove vendor options unless the selected remote provider documents them.
- Browser or driver cannot be launched locally: confirm the browser is installed and that the driver mechanism expected by your WebdriverIO setup is available and compatible. A valid capability alone does not install a browser.
- Remote session fails while local works: verify the remote endpoint, authentication and provider-required capability extensions. Provider settings differ, so do not copy a cloud configuration from another service without checking its current documentation.
- Tests fail only when parallel: reduce
maxInstancesor set a lower per-capability limit. Check for shared test data, ports, accounts, or other resources that concurrent workers may collide on. - Headless test behaves differently or fails: verify the browser-specific headless flag and version. Safari does not support headless mode in the documented capability setup; use an appropriate visible or remote environment where needed.
- Selectors or assertions fail in one browser: distinguish an application compatibility issue from timing or selector assumptions. Use stable, user-relevant selectors and wait for the actual condition your assertion needs rather than assuming identical render timing.
