Short answer: Hire a software development company when your WebAR project needs more than a basic template—such as custom tracking, interactive 3D, device-specific fallbacks, analytics, or a managed launch. The company should turn a browser link or QR code into a tested augmented-reality experience, while documenting exactly which phones and browsers work, who owns the code and assets, where the project is hosted, and what happens if a platform changes.
Choose the tracking method before comparing proposals. Image targets, face effects, and world tracking have different technical dependencies and testing requirements. A convincing demo is not enough: require a device matrix, acceptance criteria, licensing details, handoff plan, and a maintenance commitment.

What a WebAR development company actually delivers
WebAR is an augmented-reality experience delivered through a web browser instead of a dedicated mobile application. A visitor can open a URL or scan a QR code, grant camera access, and enter the experience without downloading an app. That lower entry barrier is useful for packaging, events, retail campaigns, product demonstrations, education, and other situations where you cannot expect an audience to install software.
A capable development company can handle several connected workstreams:

- Web and AR engineering: building the page, camera flow, tracking behavior, user interface, loading states, and error handling.
- 3D production or integration: modeling, animation, texture work, compression, and placement of supplied assets.
- Publishing: configuring domains, hosting, deployment, analytics, and release processes.
- Quality assurance: checking representative iOS and Android phones and browsers under real network and lighting conditions.
- Handoff and support: delivering source code and assets, explaining licenses, and maintaining the experience after launch.
Provider pages often list these services, but those statements are self-reported. Treat them as a starting point for questions, not independent proof of quality. Ask to see relevant shipped work and to meet the people who would build and test your project.
Choose the tracking approach before you request estimates
The tracking method determines much of the engineering effort, asset preparation, device coverage, and fallback design. A proposal that does not name its tracking mode is too vague to compare.
Image-target experiences
Image tracking recognizes a specific printed or on-screen image and anchors digital content to it. The target might be product packaging, a poster, a card, or a page in a catalog. Ask the company how target images will be selected and tested, how much of the image must remain visible, and what happens when the camera cannot recognize it. Targets should be supplied in final form before performance and tracking acceptance tests are run.
Face effects
Face tracking places masks, makeup, accessories, or other effects relative to a user’s face. It requires careful consideration of camera permission messaging, lighting, multiple faces, and performance on lower-powered phones. Define whether the experience supports one face or several and what the user sees if tracking is lost.
World tracking
World tracking lets content sit on floors, tables, or other surfaces rather than on a printed target or face. It usually has the broadest environmental variability: textureless surfaces, poor lighting, movement, and device capability can all affect placement. The company should demonstrate how users find a surface, reposition an object, recover tracking, and continue on devices that cannot provide the full behavior.
Product visualization and campaign flows
Product visualization may combine world tracking with a 3D model, selectable variants, animation, and a call to action. A browser campaign might instead use an image target, face effect, or a short interactive sequence. Write the desired user journey—entry, permission, tracking, interaction, conversion, and exit—before discussing implementation. The same visual idea can require very different work depending on the chosen tracking mode.
| Tracking mode | Typical anchor | Questions to put in the proposal | Fallback to define |
|---|---|---|---|
| Image target | Printed or on-screen image | Which images qualify, how recognition is tested, and how partial visibility is handled | Instruction to move closer, reveal the target, or view a non-AR version |
| Face tracking | User’s face | Supported face count, lighting limits, camera flow, and effect performance | Static preview or simplified effect when tracking is unavailable |
| World tracking | Floor, table, or surrounding space | Surface discovery, placement controls, recovery behavior, and device limits | Product viewer, image target, or ordinary 3D preview |
Browser and device constraints are part of the product
Because WebAR is a web experience, browser support, camera permission, network performance, and the target device set directly affect delivery. “Works on mobile” is not an acceptance criterion. Name the iOS and Android phones and the browsers that matter to your audience, then require the company to test those exact combinations.

Ask for a demonstration on representative target phones rather than a recording from one high-end device. The demonstration should cover first load, permission approval and denial, tracking acquisition, tracking loss, orientation changes, asset loading, and the fallback path. Require the company to document known limitations instead of silently excluding older or less powerful devices.
Performance should be measured against agreed conditions: loading time on the intended network, stability during the core interaction, and behavior when the device cannot sustain the requested effect. The figures and thresholds are project decisions, not universal WebAR standards, so put them in writing before production.
How to select a software development company
- Write a one-page brief. State the audience, entry point (URL, QR code, or both), campaign dates, countries, expected interactions, required content, analytics needs, and the phones and browsers that are in scope.
- Choose a provisional tracking mode. Identify whether the concept is based on image targets, face effects, world tracking, or a combination. If you are unsure, ask candidates to explain the trade-off rather than allowing each to price a different interpretation.
- Issue the same request for proposal. Give every candidate identical assets, user flows, device requirements, and launch assumptions. Ask each to list exclusions and dependencies.
- Inspect relevant shipped work. Look for examples using the same tracking mode, asset complexity, audience scale, and campaign duration. Request a live link when possible and ask which portions were built in-house.
- Review the technical plan. The proposal should identify the browser capabilities required, the fallback on unsupported devices, the hosting arrangement, the deployment account, and the testing method.
- Run a small proof of concept when risk is high. A short prototype can test a difficult target image, a demanding 3D model, or a critical device before you commit to full production. Define what the prototype must prove and who owns its output.
- Negotiate ownership and support before signing. Put source code, 3D files, image targets, domains, deployment accounts, analytics data, and documentation in the contract. Define response times, release procedures, and the cost of continuing after the campaign.
Questions every WebAR request for proposal should answer
- Which tracking mode and browser capabilities does the proposed experience require?
- What is the fallback when a phone or browser cannot provide that capability?
- Which exact iOS and Android devices and browsers will be tested?
- How will performance be measured, and what are the acceptance thresholds?
- Are 3D modeling, optimization, animation, sound, accessibility, analytics, and content management included or optional?
- Who supplies and approves image targets, 3D models, textures, copy, and audio?
- Where will the experience be hosted, who controls the account and domain, and what operating costs continue after launch?
- Who is responsible for security, privacy notices, camera-permission messaging, and analytics configuration?
- Which runtime, software development kit, engine, asset, and third-party service licenses apply?
- What can be exported if the company, hosting provider, or platform is discontinued?
Understand the 8th Wall platform change before choosing a stack
As of February 28, 2026, 8th Wall’s hosted platform was retired. Official documentation says experiences that were already published on the hosted service continue to run until February 28, 2027. The 8th Wall Open Source Team wrote in its March 2, 2026 announcement, “As of February 28, 2026, that transition is complete.” A new project should therefore not assume that the old cloud editor or hosted workflow is available.
The current materials distinguish two different pieces:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- MIT-licensed engine framework: an open framework containing core architecture and features such as Face Effects, Image Targets, and Sky Effects. It excludes SLAM.
- Distributed engine binary: a separately licensed binary that includes SLAM. The official documentation states that it does not include VPS, Maps, or Hand Tracking.
Those distinctions matter when a proposal promises world tracking or other advanced behavior. Ask the company to identify the exact package, version, license, included features, and distribution method. For an existing hosted link, establish an export, migration, or replacement-hosting plan well before February 28, 2027. Check the current official documentation and applicable license at contract time because features and terms can change.
8th Wall’s undated company press material reports more than 2,000 commercial experiences since its first full year in 2019. The same material claims potential access across more than 5 billion smartphones on iOS and Android, as well as computers and headsets. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited counts of active or compatible users, so they should not replace your own device testing.
Plan delivery in verifiable stages
1. Discovery and technical brief
The company converts the concept into a user flow, tracking decision, asset list, device matrix, analytics plan, and fallback. Any unresolved dependency—such as a target image, 3D model, platform license, or hosting account—should be listed with an owner and due date.

2. Interaction prototype
A prototype should prove the riskiest behavior first: recognition of the target, face alignment, surface placement, or loading of a representative model. Test it on the least capable device in scope, not only on a developer’s newest phone.

3. Production build
Once the tracking behavior is accepted, the team adds final assets, interface states, animation, audio, accessibility features, analytics, and campaign content. Keep a versioned build so a last-minute content change does not erase a known-good release.
4. Device quality assurance
Test the complete journey on every agreed phone and browser. Record permission denial, interrupted network, tracking loss, orientation changes, reloads, and return visits. Log defects by device and browser rather than describing a problem as simply “mobile.”
5. Launch and monitoring
Confirm the production domain, QR code destination, analytics events, privacy copy, and rollback process. Monitor real usage for loading failures and unsupported-device visits, then prioritize fixes according to the acceptance criteria.
6. Handoff
Receive the source repository, build instructions, 3D source files, optimized exports, image targets, domain and hosting access, analytics configuration, license records, and a list of known limitations. A handoff that contains only a URL leaves you dependent on the vendor.

There is no reliable standard WebAR price or independent performance benchmark to use as a universal comparison. Request a line-item estimate with one-time and recurring costs separated. The main cost drivers are:
- Tracking complexity and the number of fallback paths.
- Original 3D modeling, animation, sound, and repeated asset revisions.
- Optimization for a broad range of phones and browsers.
- Custom content management, analytics, accessibility, or integrations.
- Hosting, traffic, monitoring, support, and campaign-duration requirements.
- Runtime, engine, SDK, asset, and third-party service licenses.
- Migration work if an existing hosted experience must be exported or rebuilt.
Ask whether the quote assumes client-supplied assets, a single language, a fixed campaign period, or a narrow device list. A lower initial figure may omit the testing, hosting, or maintenance that makes the experience dependable after launch.

Common failure modes and practical fixes
The demo works only on one phone
Cause: testing was performed on a high-end device outside the audience profile. Fix: make the representative device matrix and pass/fail criteria contractual, then test the complete flow before final payment.
Users deny camera access or do not understand the first screen
Cause: the permission request appears without context. Fix: explain why the camera is needed, provide a clear retry path, and offer a non-AR fallback when permission remains unavailable.
Recommended Free Tools
Tracking is unstable in real environments
Cause: the target, lighting, surface, or movement differs from the prototype conditions. Fix: test representative environments, document limits, add recovery instructions, and simplify the effect if stability cannot be achieved.
The experience loads slowly or exhausts device resources
Cause: unoptimized models, textures, audio, or excessive startup content. Fix: optimize assets, defer nonessential content, measure loading under the intended network, and define a usable loading state.
A platform change strands the project
Cause: the contract names a hosted service but not an export or replacement plan. Fix: identify the package and license, retain deployable source and assets, control the domain and hosting account, and schedule migration work before a published-service deadline.
The vendor owns the only working copy
Cause: ownership and handoff were left implicit. Fix: list every deliverable—code, models, targets, domains, deployment credentials, analytics, and documentation—in the agreement and verify the transfer at launch.
