Web Scraping and Proxies: Common Questions Answered

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: A proxy sends your scraper’s request through an intermediary, so the website sees the proxy’s exit address rather than your direct network address. That can support location-specific, authorized collection, but it does not grant permission, override access controls, or make aggressive crawling acceptable. Choose residential or datacenter infrastructure, and rotating or sticky sessions, according to the workflow you are allowed to run.

What a scraping proxy actually changes

Without a proxy, a crawler connects to a site from its own network address. With one, the request travels to a proxy server, which fetches the page and returns it to the crawler. The target generally records the proxy’s exit address as the apparent source.

This arrangement can be useful when you need a request to originate from a particular country or region, or when your organization separates collection traffic from production systems. It does not change the content owner’s terms, copyright rules, privacy obligations, authentication requirements, or a site’s decision to block automation.

What a proxy does not do

  • It does not give you permission to collect data.
  • It does not make a CAPTCHA, bot check, paywall, login requirement, or technical restriction permissible to bypass.
  • It does not guarantee anonymity, delivery, speed, or successful rendering.
  • It does not turn a prohibited crawl into an acceptable one by changing IP addresses.

Residential versus datacenter proxies

The labels describe where the exit address comes from. A residential proxy uses an address associated with a consumer internet service provider. A datacenter proxy uses infrastructure hosted in a data center. Neither category is universally better; performance and acceptance depend on the authorized target, geography, workload, and provider’s sourcing and policies.

Vendor documentation describes both options and presents residential addresses for location-specific public data, but those are product descriptions rather than independent benchmarks. Test the least complex configuration on a target you are authorized to crawl, and measure response time, error rate, completeness, and cost.

Rotating or sticky residential proxies?

Rotation changes the exit address between requests or at defined intervals. Sticky sessions keep the same address for a multi-step period. The right choice follows the application’s state requirements, not a goal of defeating a site’s restrictions.

Use a sticky session when

  • A workflow spans several requests and the site ties cookies or a cart to one session.
  • You must load a page, submit a permitted form, and retrieve the resulting response consistently.
  • Changing addresses would invalidate authentication or trigger additional verification.

Use rotation when

  • An authorized broad crawl needs requests distributed across available infrastructure.
  • The provider and target’s instructions allow that traffic pattern.
  • Your crawler can tolerate independent requests without shared session state.

Rotation is not a remedy for a denial. If a site signals that automated collection is unwelcome, stop, request permission, use an official API, or narrow the project. Do not treat more addresses as an automatic solution.

How to choose a proxy configuration responsibly

  1. Confirm authorization. Read the site’s terms, API documentation, written permission, and applicable organizational policies. Define the data and purpose before selecting infrastructure.
  2. Read crawler instructions. Fetch /robots.txt for each host and honor applicable rules. RFC 9309, published by the IETF in 2022, says: “This document specifies the rules originally defined by the Robots Exclusion Protocol [ROBOTSTXT] that crawlers are requested to honor when accessing URIs.” Robots guidance is not a way to hide content and is not a replacement for access controls.
  3. Set an identifiable user agent. Include an organization or project name and a contact address where appropriate. AWS recommends transparency, delays based on site instructions (or a random delay), and a reasonable crawl rate.
  4. Start with the simplest network. Use a direct connection or datacenter proxy if it meets the authorized need. Add residential geography or rotation only when the workflow requires it.
  5. Select a session model. Preserve one session for stateful, multi-step work; rotate only for stateless requests where distribution is permitted.
  6. Limit concurrency and scope. Cache responses, avoid duplicate URLs, honor retry-after signals, and schedule work outside peak periods when the site requests it.
  7. Monitor and stop safely. Record status codes, latency, proxy exit, retries, and bytes transferred. Set ceilings for requests and errors so a configuration mistake cannot run indefinitely.

How fast should a crawler run?

There is no universal rate limit. AWS Prescriptive Guidance gives conditional examples: for small or medium sites, one request every 10–15 seconds might be appropriate; for larger sites or explicitly permitted crawls, one to two requests per second might be appropriate. These are examples, not standards. Follow the site’s instructions and reduce the rate when latency, errors, or server load rises.

Use exponential backoff for transient failures, add jitter so workers do not synchronize, and avoid retrying permanent responses such as a clear authorization failure. A proxy pool can increase your capacity; it does not increase the target’s capacity or your permission.

Rank #2

Is web scraping legal?

The answer depends on jurisdiction, the site’s terms, the data, how access occurs, and the project’s purpose. The available technical guidance does not establish a jurisdiction-specific legal conclusion. Treat this as a compliance question requiring advice for your location and facts, not as a feature supplied by a proxy.

At a minimum, document your lawful basis and purpose, minimize personal data, respect authentication and paywalls, honor contractual restrictions, provide a contact path, and obtain permission for extensive or sensitive collection. If the project involves personal information, confidential material, copyrighted databases, or circumvention, consult qualified counsel before running it.

Common implementation problems and fixes

Every request returns a block page

First verify that the target permits automation, your user agent is truthful, and your rate is reasonable. Check the response body and status code, not just whether the TCP connection succeeded. Do not respond by endlessly increasing rotation.

Pages are incomplete or inconsistent

Check whether content is rendered by JavaScript, whether cookies must persist, and whether your session is changing between dependent requests. Use a sticky session for an authorized multi-step flow, wait for the required content, and cache successful responses.

Requests time out

Measure DNS, connection, proxy negotiation, server response, and download time separately. Reduce concurrency, enforce connect and total timeouts, retry only transient failures with backoff, and remove unhealthy exits. A different proxy type may help, but benchmark it on the specific permitted target rather than assuming residential is faster.

Location results are wrong

Check the exit address’s country and city, the target’s geo-detection method, DNS behavior, cookies, and account settings. Pin the required geography and keep the session consistent. A proxy cannot guarantee that every third-party service uses IP location alone.

Costs grow unexpectedly

Track requests, transferred bytes, retries, and proxy time by host. Deduplicate URLs, use conditional requests where supported, cache immutable pages, and cap workers. Compare total cost—including failed attempts and bandwidth—not only the advertised per-address price.

What to compare among providers

Evaluate network origin, geography, rotation and sticky controls, authentication method, integration fit, sourcing and privacy practices, policy transparency, measured performance on your authorized target, support, and total cost. Product pages from Web Scraper and ResidentialProxy.io explain their own proxy options and use cases; they are not neutral tests and do not establish a provider ranking.

Ask whether addresses are shared or dedicated, how abuse reports are handled, which countries are actually available, whether traffic is logged, how long credentials last, and what happens when an exit fails. Require clear documentation and an emergency stop rather than selecting solely on a large pool advertised without operating details.

Practical architecture for a compliant crawler

  • Discovery: maintain an allowlist of hosts and URL patterns.
  • Policy: fetch and cache robots.txt, record terms and permissions, and enforce deny rules before scheduling.
  • Scheduler: apply per-host concurrency, delay, jitter, and retry budgets.
  • Fetcher: use explicit timeouts, truthful headers, cookie isolation, and the selected session policy.
  • Storage: retain only necessary fields, protect credentials, and set deletion dates.
  • Observability: log response class, latency, exit, and reason for each retry without storing unnecessary personal data.
  • Review: pause automatically on rising error rates, blocks, or a changed site instruction.

Or skip the browser setup

If your task is to obtain a clean visual record of a public page rather than parse its underlying data, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

Example cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every plan includes the features; the Free plan provides 1,000 screenshots per month without a card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free ScreenshotNeo plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a proxy make my scraper anonymous?

No. The target may see the proxy exit, but providers, network operators, cookies, browser fingerprints, accounts, and request patterns can still identify activity.

Should I rotate proxies for one logged-in account?

Usually not. A sticky session better preserves cookies and state; rotating a logged-in workflow can trigger verification or invalidate the session.

Does robots.txt legally permit scraping?

No. It is crawler guidance requested by RFC 9309, not a legal permission or substitute for terms, authentication, or access controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are residential proxies always less detectable than datacenter proxies?

The sources do not establish that universal claim. Acceptance depends on the target, behavior, address reputation, and many signals beyond network origin.

The Bottom Line

Use the least complex proxy setup that satisfies an authorized workflow, keep sessions stable when state matters, throttle requests, honor robots.txt and site instructions, and treat legality as a jurisdiction-specific question—not something a proxy solves.
