Web app monitoring tools collect and connect evidence about how an application behaves; they do more than report whether a server responds. Sentry is an example focused on errors and application performance, New Relic represents a broader monitoring platform, and Grafana Cloud Application Observability is a managed observability option built around OpenTelemetry and the Prometheus data model. OpenTelemetry itself is an instrumentation and telemetry portability framework, not a monitoring backend. The right fit depends on what you need to see, how you instrument the app, your operating constraints, and how the vendor charges for data.
What web app monitoring tools show
A monitoring system is useful when it helps answer both “what is happening?” and “where should we investigate?” An uptime check can tell you whether an endpoint responds, but it may not reveal that a user can no longer sign in or that checkout is failing for a subset of requests. The OpenTelemetry observability primer frames reliability around whether a service is doing what users expect, not simply whether it is reachable.
Application monitoring usually works from telemetry produced by the application and its environment. Three core signals are metrics, logs, and traces. They answer different questions, and become more diagnostic when they can be correlated.
| Signal | What it represents | Useful question |
|---|---|---|
| Metrics | Aggregated numeric measurements over time, such as request rate or error rate. | Did the error rate rise after a deployment? Is latency trending upward? |
| Logs | Timestamped records of events or application state. | What did the application report when this request failed? |
| Traces | A record of a request’s work across operations or services. | Did time accumulate in the web handler, a downstream service, or a database call? |
For example, a trace may show that a slow page request spent most of its time waiting on a database operation. A related log can provide the error details, while a metric indicates whether the problem is isolated or widespread. If these signals live in disconnected tools without shared identifiers or context, the team may have to reconstruct the relationship manually.

Examples of web app monitoring tools
These are examples of different product scopes, not a tested ranking. Vendor documentation describes their capabilities; it does not establish which one is fastest, easiest, cheapest, or best for every team.
Sentry: application errors and performance investigation
Sentry describes its product as application performance monitoring and error tracking software for developers. It is a direct example to consider when the central need is investigating application errors and performance issues. Before choosing it, check that the languages and frameworks in your app are supported and that the available instrumentation can capture the context your team needs. Also assess whether its workflow can connect a reported error to relevant performance data and the surrounding request activity.
Do not assume that an error-focused product alone covers every monitoring need. A team may also need infrastructure metrics, log management, browser-side signals, or external availability checks; confirm the specific scope and plan requirements against current vendor documentation.
New Relic: a broader monitoring platform
New Relic’s APM documentation and pricing page describe application performance monitoring alongside distributed tracing, error tracking, digital experience monitoring, and log management. That breadth can be useful for teams looking to bring several types of visibility into a wider platform. It also makes plan details and the total cost especially important to inspect: New Relic warns that add-ons can add charges, so verify which capabilities are included and which incur additional cost for your account.
Compare the product’s capabilities with the operational reality of your team. A long feature list is not a substitute for confirming the supported instrumentation, the data you intend to send, the retention you require, and the views engineers will use during an incident.

Grafana Cloud Application Observability: managed observability
Grafana documents Application Observability as an APM solution built around OpenTelemetry and the Prometheus data model. It is an example of a managed route for teams adopting those conventions, rather than proof that every component of a monitoring stack is configured or operated identically for every organization.
Setup and pricing need particular care. Grafana’s current documentation distinguishes experiences for organizations onboarded before or after September 7, 2026. The documentation lists a $0.025 per host-hour charge for all new customers, plus separate telemetry charges of $0.50 per 1,000 active metric series and $0.50 per GB for traces, logs, and profiles. Treat these as the documented rates for the described new-customer context, not a guaranteed estimate for your bill: confirm the live pricing, onboarding cohort, and any other applicable charges with Grafana before committing.
OpenTelemetry: instrumentation and portability, not a backend
OpenTelemetry is an open-source, vendor-neutral framework and toolkit for instrumenting applications, generating and collecting telemetry, and exporting it. Its official documentation states: “OpenTelemetry is not an observability backend itself.” A separate system is needed for storage, querying, visualization, and alerting.
That distinction matters when comparing products. OpenTelemetry can be part of the path that produces and transports telemetry, while Sentry, New Relic, or Grafana Cloud can be considered as product examples with their own scopes. “OpenTelemetry versus a monitoring tool” is therefore often a category mismatch: the framework and the backend may play complementary roles. OpenTelemetry’s documentation page, last modified August 29, 2025, says the project’s ecosystem includes more than 90 observability vendors. That is the project’s own documentation figure, not an independent market census or a current vendor count.
How to compare candidates for your app
Start with the questions your team needs to answer during an incident, then work outward to instrumentation, operations, and cost. A product can expose many signals but still be a poor fit if it is difficult to instrument, cannot meet data-location requirements, or charges unpredictably at your workload.

1. List the visibility you actually need
- Application errors and stack or request context.
- Latency, throughput, and error-rate metrics.
- Distributed traces across the services and dependencies on the critical path.
- Logs that can be searched alongside errors and traces.
- Browser or other digital-experience visibility if user-facing behavior is part of the problem.
- External uptime checks, while recognizing that reachability alone does not establish that user workflows succeed.
- Profiles, if you need to investigate resource use or code-level performance and the candidate supports them for your stack.
Do not buy or instrument every signal by default. Decide which unanswered diagnostic questions justify collecting each type of data, and consider whether you have people and processes to act on it.
2. Check instrumentation and portability
- Confirm support for your programming languages, frameworks, and deployment environment.
- Find out which data is collected automatically and which requires manual instrumentation or configuration.
- Check how well the product works with OpenTelemetry if you want vendor-neutral instrumentation or a choice of telemetry destinations.
- Test whether your important context—such as request identifiers and service boundaries—survives the path from application to backend.
“Supports OpenTelemetry” does not by itself tell you which signals, semantic conventions, instrumentation libraries, or features are supported in your particular configuration. Verify the details for the language and integration you intend to use.

3. Walk through a real diagnosis
Use a representative failure or slow request as your evaluation scenario. Can an engineer move from an alert or error to the relevant trace, then inspect related logs, dependencies, and the deployment change? If the tool shows only an aggregate graph or an isolated error record, ask how the team would identify the cause and confirm the fix. The workflow matters at least as much as the breadth of a feature checklist.
4. Decide who operates the system and where data goes
Compare managed SaaS with self-managed components in terms of responsibility, not just architecture diagrams. For a managed service, verify data location, retention, access controls, and the vendor’s current plan rules. For a self-managed route, account for who will maintain collectors, storage, queries, dashboards, upgrades, and alerting. OpenTelemetry can provide instrumentation and transport, but it does not eliminate the need to run or select a backend.
5. Model total cost using your expected data
Identify the billing dimensions that apply before estimating cost. Depending on the product and plan, these may include seats, host-hours, ingested telemetry volume, retention, or add-ons. Estimate from your own expected workload rather than a vendor’s example alone; noisy logs, high-cardinality metrics, or unexpectedly chatty instrumentation can change data volume. For New Relic, account for the vendor’s warning that add-ons can add charges. For Grafana Cloud Application Observability, include the documented host-hour and telemetry charges described above and verify the current terms for your cohort.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits—and where it does not
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an application monitoring backend. It does not replace metrics, logs, traces, alerting, or the monitoring examples above. It can be a separate utility when a developer needs a captured visual record of a web page—for example, to keep a screenshot alongside an investigation or test artifact. That is a complementary use, not monitoring coverage. See ScreenshotNeo for the product overview.
Capture a page with one request
For a visual capture, send a GET request with the target URL and your access key. This cURL example writes the response to a WebP file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the example target with the page you need and provide your own API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.
Why it may help with a visual evidence task
- Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Responses include
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders. - An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. - The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
Try ScreenshotNeo with 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Common evaluation mistakes
- Choosing from feature counts. A feature is valuable only if it helps answer a real operational question and is usable with your stack.
- Treating an endpoint check as proof of reliability. A server can respond while a user-facing action fails; select checks that reflect important user outcomes as well.
- Comparing unlike categories. OpenTelemetry is a telemetry framework, not a hosted backend; ScreenshotNeo captures web pages and is not an application monitoring platform.
- Using a headline price as the full estimate. Check billing units, add-ons, retention, and the volume your instrumentation will produce.
- Assuming a vendor’s product description proves an operational fit. Vendor documentation describes available capabilities, not how well they work for your particular workload. Validate the specific integrations and diagnosis workflow you need.
FAQ
Can OpenTelemetry send data to more than one backend?
OpenTelemetry is designed as a vendor-neutral instrumentation and telemetry framework, but the exact export and routing arrangement depends on the SDKs, collectors, and backend configuration you choose. Confirm the supported configuration for your implementation before designing around multiple destinations.

No. The descriptions here reflect vendor documentation and the OpenTelemetry project’s documentation; they do not report comparative product tests or claim that one option performs better in a particular workload.
Is there a reliable count of how many developers use each tool?
No representative adoption statistic is established here. OpenTelemetry’s documentation figure of more than 90 refers to observability vendors in its ecosystem, not the number of developers, customers, or monitoring deployments.
