For a football live-score site, use a stadium’s latitude and longitude to retrieve weather for a fixture—not the club name or city centre. WeatherAPI.com and Open-Meteo both document forecast services suitable for location-based lookups, but their forecast horizons, commercial terms, attribution rules, and request limits differ. Neither provider’s published feature list establishes which will forecast conditions more accurately at a particular ground.
What should a football weather API show?
Weather belongs alongside a fixture as context, not as a result or an official postponement notice. A general forecast does not establish pitch conditions, player impact, or whether a match will proceed. Keep those claims separate unless you have evidence from an appropriate source.

Represent the venue with stored latitude and longitude in your stadium or venue records. Open-Meteo’s forecast endpoint accepts coordinates; WeatherAPI.com documents location-based queries. A club name or city-centre lookup can point to a different location from the ground. If a venue has multiple pitches or a roof, document which coordinates the displayed forecast represents: the reviewed services do not establish a roof-aware stadium-weather product.

WeatherAPI.com vs Open-Meteo: the practical differences
| Decision | WeatherAPI.com | Open-Meteo | What it means for a football site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Venue lookup | Location-based API queries; API-key authentication is documented. | Forecast endpoint accepts latitude and longitude. | Save stable venue coordinates and query by location. WeatherAPI.com API documentation; Open-Meteo forecast documentation. |
| Forecast output and horizon | Current conditions and forecast endpoints; hourly and daily forecasts, up to 14 days, in documentation reviewed in 2026. | Hourly forecasts with multiple weather models and model-specific availability; the documented forecast_days parameter allows up to 16 days. |
Choose by the lead time and fields your fixture pages need, not just the largest headline horizon. A distant scheduled fixture should not be presented as having a dependable forecast beyond the service’s supported horizon. WeatherAPI.com API documentation; WeatherAPI.com features; Open-Meteo forecast documentation. |
| Historical data | Historical weather documentation begins on 1 January 2010; archive access depends on plan. | Historical reanalysis documentation covers ERA5 from 1940 and ERA5-Land from 1950. | Do not label historical estimates as station observations. Open-Meteo explains that reanalysis reconstructs past conditions and may estimate values where observations are sparse; check WeatherAPI.com plan access before relying on its archive. WeatherAPI.com API documentation; WeatherAPI.com features; Open-Meteo historical weather documentation. |
| Commercial use | The current feature page says commercial use is permitted across plans. Terms prohibit reselling the weather data. | The standard API is designated for non-commercial use; paid customer access includes a commercial-use licence. | Check the current terms against your actual display, caching, and redistribution model before deployment. WeatherAPI.com features; WeatherAPI.com terms; Open-Meteo pricing and terms. |
| Credentials | API key is passed as a request parameter, and the terms require keeping it confidential. | Paid customer requests use an API key with the customer endpoint. | Keep required secret keys on your server; do not ship them in browser-visible code. WeatherAPI.com API documentation; WeatherAPI.com terms; Open-Meteo pricing and terms. |
| Attribution | The reviewed material does not establish a specific attribution instruction; check the provider’s current terms. | Weather data is licensed under CC BY 4.0, and attribution is required, including for commercial use. | Plan a visible attribution and record modifications where Open-Meteo’s terms require them. Open-Meteo pricing and terms; WeatherAPI.com terms. |
| Limits and scaling | Call allocations and endpoint access vary by plan; the provider’s terms refer users to plan details and reserve the right to change terms. | Pricing lists call budgets and plan limits; standard access has no uptime guarantee. | Estimate demand from your page traffic and refresh design, then verify current limits and service terms for your intended workload. WeatherAPI.com features; WeatherAPI.com terms; Open-Meteo pricing and terms. |
How far ahead can each API forecast a fixture?
WeatherAPI.com documents forecasts up to 14 days. Open-Meteo documents a configurable forecast horizon of up to 16 days, with forecast availability varying by model. These are documented product limits, not guarantees that a forecast several days ahead will prove correct at a given stadium. Do not render fixtures outside the supported horizon as though their weather is a reliable forecast.

Can you use either API commercially?
WeatherAPI.com’s current feature page says commercial use is permitted across plans, while its terms prohibit selling the weather data. Open-Meteo distinguishes its standard, non-commercial API from paid customer access with a commercial-use licence; its weather data is CC BY 4.0 and requires attribution. Those distinctions matter for a live-score site that displays, caches, or redistributes weather information. Review the current provider terms for your specific use and geography before launch, since terms and plans can change.

Published call allowances reviewed in 2026
| Provider and access | Published allowance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| WeatherAPI.com free tier | 100,000 calls per month | Provider-published current plan figure reviewed in 2026; plan features and limits may change. WeatherAPI.com features. |
| Open-Meteo standard API | 10,000 calls per day | Standard access is designated for non-commercial use and has no uptime guarantee. Open-Meteo pricing and terms. |
| Open-Meteo Standard plan | 1 million calls per month | Provider-published plan figure reviewed in 2026; this is a plan budget, not a usage estimate for a particular site. Open-Meteo pricing and terms. |
| Open-Meteo Professional plan | 5 million calls per month | Provider-published plan figure reviewed in 2026; this is a plan budget, not a usage estimate for a particular site. Open-Meteo pricing and terms. |
| Open-Meteo Enterprise plan | More than 50 million calls per month | Provider-published plan figure reviewed in 2026; the pricing page states “more than 50 million.” Open-Meteo pricing and terms. |
Plan budgets are not a recommendation for how frequently to request data. If every visitor’s match-page view triggers a new provider request, a popular fixture can multiply calls rapidly. Cache weather by venue and valid forecast time, and refresh according to match proximity and the provider’s update cadence. Estimate demand using your actual traffic and refresh strategy rather than assuming that a listed allowance will be sufficient.

Historical weather can help annotate archived results, but historical coverage does not mean every value is a direct observation. Open-Meteo’s ERA5 and ERA5-Land products are reanalysis: reconstructed historical datasets that can estimate conditions where observations are sparse. Its documentation gives coverage from 1940 for ERA5 and 1950 for ERA5-Land. WeatherAPI.com documents historical weather beginning 1 January 2010, with access dependent on plan. Identify the data type in archived pages and check plan coverage before building around historical access. - 7.5'' LARGE HD VA SCREEN: Upgraded 7.5'' HD VA display delivers wide viewing angles, ultra-high static contrast ratio, and vibrant colors. The clearly partitioned interface shows indoor/outdoor temperature, humidity, date, time, weather forecast, barometric pressure, and other critical data at a glance. With 5 adjustable brightness levels, it effortlessly adapts to any lighting environment.
- PERSONAL WEATHER FORECAST: Provides continuously updated hyperlocal weather predictions. By analyzing barometric pressure trends, the weather station predicts weather conditions for the next 12 hours. After a 7-10 day calibration period, it precisely predicts microclimates within an 8-12 mile radius of your home. Get a clear snapshot of the day’s weather before stepping out each morning to plan your outfit and schedule with confidence.
- ATOMIC CLOCK SYNC & AUTO DST: More than a weather station—it’s a precision clock! Supports all 7 major North American time zones. Once set, it automatically receives the official atomic clock signal for split-second accuracy and self-adjusts for Daylight Saving Time (DST). If standard time signals are weak in your area, manual time setup is always available.
- 3-CHANNEL WIRELESS SENSORS: Monitor real-time conditions in up to 3 locations simultaneously with included sensors (1 sensor included in the package). Sync indoor and outdoor data seamlessly with high/low temperature alerts to notify you of sudden weather changes. Sensors operate on 2 AA batteries (not included) for flexible placement.
- DUAL-POWER MODE WITH ENERGY SAVING: Choose between two power options. When using the adapter, the screen stays constantly lit with 5 adjustable brightness levels (except during RCC signal searches). On battery power alone, a quick tap on the top button activates the backlight for 15 seconds before auto-shutoff. This energy-saving design significantly extends battery life.
A practical implementation checklist
- Store venue coordinates. Add latitude and longitude to each stadium record and use them for fixture lookups instead of the club name or a city-centre search.
- Choose a suitable forecast window. Check the required match lead time against WeatherAPI.com’s documented 14-day horizon or Open-Meteo’s configurable horizon up to 16 days and model-specific availability.
- Keep provider credentials private. Put API keys in server-side configuration and make provider requests from a backend when a secret key is required.
- Cache and budget requests. Cache by venue and valid forecast time; estimate calls from real traffic and your planned refresh cadence.
- Meet usage and attribution terms. Verify the current commercial licence, display and redistribution terms, limits, and attribution requirements for the chosen service.
- Label data honestly. Distinguish forecast context from official match status, and identify reanalysis or other estimated historical data rather than presenting it as a stadium observation.
Which weather API should a football live-score site choose?
Choose based on the deployment rather than a blanket accuracy claim. WeatherAPI.com may suit a site that wants a documented location-based service and a provider that says commercial use is permitted across plans, subject to its limits and no-resale terms. Open-Meteo offers coordinate-based forecasts and historical reanalysis, but commercial projects need paid customer access and required attribution. If stadium-level forecast skill is decisive, compare the candidates against the same stadium coordinates, forecast lead times, and observed conditions; the published capabilities and plan pages do not establish a universal accuracy winner.
