The wearable future is arriving unevenly. Smartwatches already lead ownership, while AI glasses are drawing interest and shipping in growing numbers; whether eyewear becomes comfortable, trusted everyday computing is still unsettled. The key distinction is between market momentum and devices people actually choose to wear and use day after day.
What the wearable market is showing—and what it is not
Different measures point to momentum, but they do not measure the same thing. NielsenIQ’s 2026 report says 65% of adults are wearable owners or intenders. It also finds that smartwatches dominate current ownership, while smart rings and smart glasses attract more interest than their current ownership levels. The combined owners-and-intenders figure is not an ownership rate. NielsenIQ’s report provides the consumer-market context.

In a Q3 2026 survey of 2,532 US online adults, more than four in ten said they were interested in or already owned smart glasses, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence Kagan. That combines interest with ownership; it does not mean more than four in ten respondents owned a pair.
Shipments show a separate kind of momentum. IDC estimates approximately 2.25 million smart-glasses shipments worldwide in Q1 2026, up 167% year over year. IDC forecasts approximately 13.6 million shipments for 2026 and 27.3 million by 2030. The Q1 figure is an estimate of products shipped, not a count of users or evidence of repeat use; the annual figures are forecasts, not realized totals.

These measures cannot be added together or treated as interchangeable. Survey interest, ownership, and shipments each describe a different step between curiosity and habitual use. The gap between them is central to understanding why growth alone does not settle the question of wearables’ future.
Three kinds of smart glasses, with different ambitions
“Smart glasses” covers more than one product idea. In its own category framing, Meta distinguishes camera AI glasses, display AI glasses, and AR glasses. That terminology is useful, but it is the company’s framing, not a universal standard. Meta’s September 2025 announcement described Orion as a prototype and said it was working on a consumer version; that announcement does not establish that Orion was generally available.
Camera AI glasses
These put functions such as a camera, microphones, audio, or AI assistance into eyewear without making an in-lens display the central feature. Their everyday value depends on whether quick, hands-free tasks are useful enough to justify wearing camera-equipped glasses in public. The same camera and microphone capabilities that can enable new interactions also create privacy and social questions.

Display AI glasses
These add visual information through a display while retaining an eyewear form. A display could make information available without requiring a phone screen, but it raises a harder practical test: whether the display is useful, legible, and unobtrusive enough to wear regularly. The category label alone does not answer that.
AR glasses
AR glasses aim to place digital content into the wearer’s view of the surrounding world. This is a more ambitious direction than adding camera, audio, or limited display functions to glasses. A prototype demonstrates a product direction, not that a comfortable, affordable, broadly useful consumer device is ready.
Why wearables have not displaced phones
A wearable succeeds by fitting into routines, not simply by offering a new interface. The wrist is already a familiar place for notifications, activity information, and quick interactions; the eye and face are more socially exposed. Glasses must earn their place through a clear everyday job while avoiding friction in comfort, appearance, charging, and public use. The available market figures establish interest and shipment growth, but do not show whether buyers use these products consistently or reduce their reliance on phones.

That distinction helps explain the uneven picture: smartwatches are an established ownership category, while smart glasses are attracting attention without yet resolving the daily-use question. It is also why a forecast for more shipments cannot, by itself, prove that glasses will replace phones or become indispensable.

Omdia Research Director Jason Low identified built-in cameras and microphones, along with resistance to all-day wear, as challenges for AI glasses in Omdia’s 16 September 2025 forecast release. Low’s observation is analyst commentary, not a regulatory finding. The practical point is that adoption depends not only on what a device can do, but on whether wearers and people around them are comfortable with it.
The Information Commissioner’s Office takes a broader public-trust view. In a 17 September 2026 statement, ICO Chief Executive Paul Arnold discussed both concerns about recording people without their knowledge and the potential for technology to support independence for people with visual impairment. The ICO’s position recognizes possible accessibility benefits without treating privacy concerns as solved. Read the ICO statement.

For a camera-equipped wearable to feel acceptable, its capture behavior and signals matter alongside its technical capabilities. Trust is not a feature that can be inferred from shipment growth; it depends on how people understand and experience the device in shared spaces.
What would show that the wearable future has arrived?
Shipment growth and survey interest are signs of a category gaining attention. A stronger case for an everyday-computing shift would require evidence that goes beyond both: sustained use, clear recurring jobs, willingness to wear devices in public, and social acceptance of how they collect information. Current figures do not establish whether smart-glasses growth will continue or whether consumers will accept camera-equipped eyewear at scale.

The likely near-term picture is therefore not one universal wearable replacing the phone. It is a set of devices with different roles: established wrist-worn products, experimental or growing eyewear categories, and more ambitious AR concepts. Their futures depend on whether each form factor solves a real problem without making daily life less comfortable or trustworthy.
