Wealthfront Cash Account review: strong yield, with sweep-account trade-offs

Wealthfront Cash is worth considering if you want a variable-yield cash account with checking-style features, but it is not a bank account or a risk-free promise of instant access. Wealthfront advertised a 3.55% base APY on September 18, 2026; the rate can change. Cash is swept to participating banks for potential FDIC pass-through coverage, and the details of that sweep, your existing deposits, and transfer limits matter as much as the headline rate.

What is the Wealthfront Cash Account?

It is a brokerage cash-management account that routes available cash through a sweep program to participating banks. The banks pay interest, while Wealthfront provides features such as account and routing numbers, direct deposit, bill payment, and debit-card access.

Wealthfront Brokerage LLC states: “Neither Wealthfront Brokerage nor any of its affiliates are a bank, and the Cash Account itself is not a deposit account.” That distinction matters: this is not a conventional bank savings account, even though bank deposits are part of how its sweep program works.

What APY does Wealthfront Cash pay?

Base rate and promotional boosts

Wealthfront advertised a 3.55% base APY on September 18, 2026. The rate is variable and may change, so that figure is a dated snapshot, not a guaranteed return or a forecast of what the account will pay over a year.

The same product page showed a new-client offer of a 0.65-percentage-point boost for three months on balances up to $150,000. Other boosts depend on qualifying product use or deposits. A boost has eligibility, duration, and balance conditions; it should not be treated as the standard rate. Check the current offer terms and your eligibility before relying on one.

How interest is credited

Participating banks pay the interest. Under Wealthfront’s Cash Sweep Program Disclosure, interest accrues daily, compounds monthly, and is credited monthly. The disclosure also cautions that the APY published on the website may not exactly represent the rate that applied during every period.

How much FDIC insurance does Wealthfront Cash provide?

Cash swept to a participating bank may be eligible for FDIC pass-through insurance if the applicable conditions are met. Wealthfront’s 2026 Cash Sweep Disclosure states the standard limit as $250,000 per depositor, per participating bank, per ownership category. Your other deposits at that bank held in the same ownership capacity count toward the same limit, including deposits outside the sweep program.

Wealthfront advertises maximum network eligibility of up to $8 million for individual accounts and $16 million for joint accounts. Those are conditional network maximums, not a guarantee that every customer’s cash receives that amount of coverage. They depend on participating-bank availability, allocation, account circumstances, and other deposits you hold. Wealthfront says allocations are not equal among banks, and participating banks may be added or removed. Check the current bank list and account for your own balances.

FDIC and SIPC cover different stages

FDIC insurance may apply after cash is deposited at participating banks and the pass-through requirements are satisfied. Wealthfront describes cash held at its brokerage or moving between institutions as covered by SIPC within applicable limits. SIPC does not protect against a loss in value, and deposits held at participating banks are not SIPC-protected. These are distinct protections, not one continuous insurance umbrella.

Can you use it like a checking account?

Wealthfront lists debit-card access, account and routing numbers, direct deposit, bill payment, mobile check deposit, ATM access, and wires to eligible destinations. The debit card is optional. Some checking-style features require partner-bank eligibility and identity verification, so availability can depend on your account.

Transfers, holds, and daily limits

Wealthfront’s support information lists a $250,000 daily ACH limit. RTP and FedNow transfers count toward that daily amount. Withdrawals using the account and routing number have a stated limit of at least $50,000 per day. These are Wealthfront-listed limits and may change; confirm the applicable limit before scheduling a large transfer.

The debit-card information lists an overall daily spending limit of $10,000, with ATM withdrawals limited to up to 10 per day and $1,000 total. Cash deposits may also have limits and can involve retailer charges.

Wealthfront advertises free instant or same-day withdrawals to eligible accounts, not to every destination in every circumstance. Destination eligibility and payment-network participation affect availability, and a new deposit may be subject to a 2–4 day holding period. If you need a specific payment to clear by a deadline, check its status and expected timing rather than assuming “instant” applies.

What fees should you check?

Wealthfront says the Cash Account has no account fees. That does not mean every transaction is free: debit-card use, ATMs, transfers, and charges from a receiving institution may have costs. Wealthfront’s current product page says it reimburses two domestic out-of-network ATM fees per month, up to $7.50 each, and offers free wires to title or escrow companies and to accounts you own. Review the current fee terms and any receiving-bank charges for the transactions you expect to make.

Who is Wealthfront Cash a good fit for?

It may suit someone who wants a variable-yield cash-management account with direct deposit and bill-pay features, and who is comfortable with a brokerage account, bank sweep, and conditional access timing. It is a weaker fit if you need to treat the balance as a single bank deposit, depend on unrestricted same-day withdrawals, or have already used much of your FDIC limit at participating banks.

Wealthfront Corporation reported that cash-management products generated approximately 74% of its total revenue in fiscal 2026. That company-reported figure is business context, not evidence that the account is better or worse for customers.

How should you compare it with other places to hold cash?

Compare the account’s actual role and terms, not just its advertised APY. For a high-yield savings account, another cash-management account, or a money-market fund, check:

  • Base APY on the same date, separately from promotional boosts, and whether the rate is variable.
  • Whether the balance is a bank deposit, brokerage cash swept to banks, or an investment security.
  • What kind of insurance or protection applies, at what limits, and how ownership category and existing balances affect coverage.
  • Transfer speed, daily caps, deposit holds, and support for direct deposit and bill payment.
  • Account and transaction fees, ATM reimbursement terms, and wire costs.
  • Whether you need emergency cash access or value brokerage-linked features more.

Wealthfront’s own product-page comparisons are company marketing claims. Treat competitor rates and market averages in that material as dated claims from Wealthfront, not as independently verified market-wide comparisons.
