Focal’s premium sound is built through a deliberately mixed process: advanced acoustic engineering is combined with hand assembly, individual listening checks and meticulous cabinet finishing. The company still makes its high-end loudspeakers and headphones around Saint-Étienne, the French city where Focal was founded in 1979, while a Bourbon-Lancy woodworking site handles much of the cabinet work.
That human involvement is not a marketing flourish added after automation. Drivers are measured electronically, listened to by trained staff and matched in pairs; finished speakers go through an anechoic-chamber measurement sequence and a visual inspection under several colored lights. Focal’s Utopia headphones and the limited Focal Crafts editions show how the same approach extends from acoustic parts to materials and decoration.

What goes into making Focal’s high-end speakers and headphones?
Focal’s Saint-Étienne headquarters assembles loudspeakers, complete speaker systems and headphones, primarily by hand. The company says it keeps substantial control of driver production in-house and works with French workshops for cabinets and finishes. This arrangement lets Focal treat the electrical, acoustic and cosmetic stages as one quality process rather than as separate outsourced steps.

In a factory visit reported by What Hi-Fi?, Focal representative Louis Gibout described the principle plainly: “We need to keep a human process in the quality process.” The practical consequence is that every driver is checked as an individual component before it becomes part of a finished product.

How Focal makes and tests its drivers
In-house diaphragms and the M-shaped profile
What Hi-Fi? reports that practically all of Focal’s key drivers are made in-house, with considerable manual work. Focal’s M-shaped membrane profile is designed to reduce stress in the diaphragm, lower distortion and limit unwanted coloration as frequencies rise. The profile appears in the 40 mm driver used by the Utopia headphone, but the broader point is control over the part that turns an electrical signal into motion and, ultimately, sound.
Beryllium work requires controlled handling
Some high-end Focal drivers use beryllium. The factory guide describes workers wearing protective “cosmonaut” suits while handling beryllium dust. That is the safety explanation given during the visit, not a general statistic about every beryllium operation. It illustrates why specialized materials demand dedicated procedures as well as engineering expertise.
Every driver gets an electronic and listening test
Focal applies an audio-signal analysis test to each driver, then has a person listen to it. Production staff are trained to recognize from the sound where a problem originates. Gibout told What Hi-Fi? that a driver is tested individually throughout production and then matched with another driver so the finished pair is as closely balanced as possible.

- Refined real leather and microfiber headband Incomparably soft, comfortable and refined. Earpads provide insulation and comfort for any head shape Easily replaceable
- 1 5/8" (40mm) Aluminum-Magnesium speaker drivers, made in France A naturally detailed, pure sound with impact - 1/8" (3.5mm) Jack and USB-C outlets Limitless connectivity
- Battery life of over 30 hours in Bluetooth and active noise cancelling mode - Aluminum mechanical construction Reliability and resistance on the move - Magnesium yoke for increased lightness

- Active noise cancelling technology and transparency mode Immerse yourself in your music or interact with your environment, as required.
The listening check is therefore diagnostic, not just a final thumbs-up. A technician may be able to distinguish a fault in the driver itself from an issue introduced during assembly, giving the factory a way to send the right component back for correction.
New staff learn the process on the line
Every new employee, regardless of role, spends two days in production, according to the factory feature. The induction includes practical tasks such as making a flax membrane and assembling drivers. Focal’s aim is to make the relationship between materials, assembly tolerances and the final sound understandable across the business, not only to specialist engineers.
How a finished speaker is measured and finished
Anechoic-chamber measurements
After assembly, Focal places finished speakers on a hydraulic platform in an anechoic chamber. Lasers and measurement equipment assess frequency response, distortion and directivity. The chamber removes room reflections so the factory can isolate the speaker’s behavior and verify that the assembled product meets its intended acoustic target.

Why Focal uses MDF for cabinets
Cabinet construction is shared with Focal’s Bourbon-Lancy woodworking site. Paul Weill, Focal’s special projects manager, says the company uses MDF because its stability and consistent density make production predictable. Real wood can contain changing grain patterns and harder spots that affect vibration, so MDF gives the cabinet a more uniform mechanical base.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHigh-gloss finishes are a repeated process
Painted and high-gloss cabinets require repeated sanding and coating. Inspectors examine panels under blue, yellow and white lights, each revealing different surface defects. If a major flaw is found, the cabinet can be returned for complete refinishing rather than being passed as acceptable. The visual inspection is treated as part of product quality, not as a cosmetic afterthought.
Are Focal headphones made in France?
Focal’s Utopia is a reference open-back hi-fi headphone made in France. Focal describes it as the result of more than 40 years of acoustic development. Its construction combines a pure-beryllium driver, a recycled forged-carbon yoke, a genuine leather headband and memory-foam ear pads.

- Closed-back headphones for home and on-the-go use
- Outstanding design, fine materials and Navy Blue finishes, with Soft Copper details
- Remarkable sound performance: incredible bass extension, and tonal balance unrivalled in their category
- Low impedance (35 Ohms) to ensure uncompromising use with a portable audio player
| Utopia specification | Focal’s stated detail |
|---|---|
| Driver | 40 mm pure-beryllium M-shaped dome |
| Design | Open-back; Focal says the driver operates without active or passive correction |
| Voice coil | Copper-and-aluminum, according to Focal’s product description |
| Frequency response | 5 Hz–23 kHz |
| Impedance | 80 Ω |
| Harmonic distortion | Below 0.2% at 1 kHz and 100 dB SPL |
| Weight | 490 g |
| Headband and pads | Genuine leather headband and memory ear pads |
| Yoke | Recycled forged carbon |
The frequency-response and distortion figures are manufacturer specifications, measured under the conditions Focal lists; they are not a guarantee that every listener will hear the same result in every system. The open-back design also means sound can escape the ear cups and outside noise can enter, so Utopia is intended for a suitable listening room rather than noisy travel.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why are Focal Utopia headphones so expensive?
Utopia’s price is tied to several costly decisions made before a listener puts them on: a precision pure-beryllium diaphragm, a low-volume French production process, hand-led assembly, individual driver testing and matching, and premium structural and contact materials. Focal also specifies a forged-carbon yoke, leather and memory foam instead of treating the headphone as a disposable plastic enclosure.
Those choices do not make a simple promise that every listener will prefer Utopia. They explain what the premium is paying for: tighter control of parts and tolerances, labor-intensive inspection and a design that avoids active or passive correction in the driver itself, according to Focal. A current retail price is not stated here because it varies by market and date.

What is Focal Crafts?
Focal Crafts is a creative laboratory located beside the Saint-Étienne production workshops. Its first Opus No.1 collection, announced in October 2025, applied patinated leather to 13 pairs of Utopia loudspeakers. These were one-off decorative editions, not a replacement for the standard production finish.
The collection extends Focal’s manufacturing idea beyond acoustic performance. The company presents it as a balance of acoustic knowledge, craftsmanship and technology, with special attention to material mastery and precision of gesture. In practical terms, buyers receive the same expectation of controlled speaker construction with an exterior treatment created as a limited artistic series.
Quick Recap
What the human-craft approach means for buyers
- Consistency is checked at component level: drivers are measured, heard and matched before final assembly.
- Engineering and workmanship overlap: the M-shaped diaphragm, anechoic measurements and cabinet density decisions address sound, while sanding, coating and lighting inspections address the finished object.
- Manufacturing geography matters: Focal identifies Saint-Étienne as its production and corporate home, with cabinet and finish work also handled in France.
- Materials are selected for a job: MDF is chosen for stable, consistent density; Utopia combines beryllium, forged carbon, leather and memory foam for specific acoustic or structural roles.
- Customization is not standard: Focal Crafts demonstrates limited, one-off decoration; ordinary models remain part of the regular product range.
