It can also mean the software clients are failing to send identity data consistently. In a September 29, 2026 post, developer minia2a revisited a zero identified-agent count and found defects in the team’s own published clients—an important reason to audit the measurement path before blaming the market.
The account is a developer’s postmortem, not an independently verified market study. Its numbers and package findings below are minia2a’s reported results in the September 29, 2026 post and its September 25 update.

How paid activity and a zero identity count can coexist
In an earlier post, minia2a reported 73 paid calls and four distinct paying wallets during a trailing seven-day window, alongside zero identified agents. Those measures answer different questions: paid calls and wallets show that transactions occurred, while an identified-agent metric depends on clients successfully sending identity information in the expected form.

The zero therefore did not, by itself, establish that customers were refusing to identify themselves or that the market had no adoption. It could also reflect a broken or inconsistent measurement path. The follow-up’s central correction was to inspect the published clients before settling on an explanation about customer behavior.

What the client audit found
The author says the first audit covered five packages and ran the installed artifacts against a mock gateway. It found three distinct classes of problems: identity data missing, identity data sent beyond its intended destination, and local identity files handled inconsistently.
| Package and version audited | Reported behavior |
|---|---|
minia2a-skill 1.3.7 |
Did not emit the X-Agent-ID header. |
minia2a-cli 1.1.7 |
Attached the header to every request, including requests to third-party hosts, and read a different identity-file path. |
minia2a-client 2.0.7 |
Read only one of two identity-file paths. |
minia2a-mcp 1.2.5 |
Read only one of two identity-file paths. |
minia2a 1.1.3 |
Read only one of two identity-file paths. |
These are historical versions and behaviors as reported by the post, not a statement about current registry releases. The author later expanded the audit to six packages by adding @minia2a/sdk 1.0.12, which the first enumeration had missed.
Missing identity can undercount adoption
If a client never sends X-Agent-ID, its activity cannot be attributed through that header. A paying user may therefore generate real demand without appearing as an identified agent. This makes an attribution metric dependent not only on user behavior, but also on whether every relevant client can deliver identity data.
Sending identity to the wrong host creates a privacy risk
The author reports that 16 of 1,703 catalog endpoints were hosted on 11 non-marketplace hosts. In the post’s account, some clients could send a stable pseudonymous identity header to those destinations, while the SDK restricted the header by host. The author characterized this as unnecessary exposure: a wallet signature was already required for a trial call, but the pseudonym was not. The endpoint count and privacy assessment are the author’s, not independent measurements.
Inconsistent file handling can split one machine into two identities
Several packages read only one of two identity-file paths. If a client ignores the path containing the existing identity, it may create or use a different one, making a single machine appear to be two agents. The later CLI correction exposed a subtler variant: reading both paths is not enough if different clients disagree about which file takes precedence when both exist.
Why the test had to prove a request was made
The author says the audit ran installed or published artifacts as child processes against a mock gateway, captured emitted headers, and made no network requests or use of trial allowance. Registry tarballs for the fixed versions reportedly passed this audit.

One early leak check nevertheless produced a false positive. A client crashed before making any requests; because the captured transcript was empty, the check found no leaked header and passed. The missing piece was an assertion that the off-domain endpoint had actually been called. Once that assertion failed, the test exposed the crash rather than treating silence as success.
“A check of the form "we looked and saw no X" is worth nothing on an empty corpus, and an empty corpus is exactly what a crash produces. It needs a companion assertion that the thing it looked at happened at all.”
The practical pattern is to test both the prohibited behavior and the event that makes the test meaningful:

- Assert that the intended request was made and captured.
- Assert that the identity header is present where it is expected.
- Assert that it is absent when the request goes to a host that should not receive it.
- Make test failures distinguish a crashed or skipped request from a clean request with no leak.
What the September update changed
An update dated September 25, 2026 says the first CLI fix was incomplete. The CLI could read both identity-file paths but preferred the CLI-era path when both existed; other packages preferred the gateway-documented path. The author reports that minia2a-cli 1.1.9 corrected the precedence and that a test with both files present changed from two identities to one.
The update lists the following fixes as reported by the author:
| Package | Reported fixed version or versions |
|---|---|
minia2a-skill |
1.3.8 |
minia2a-cli |
1.1.8, followed by 1.1.9 for the identity-file ordering correction |
minia2a-client |
2.0.8 |
minia2a-mcp |
1.2.6 |
minia2a |
1.1.4 |

Included in the expanded audit at 1.0.12; the update does not state a separate fixed version. |

What the zero did—and did not—show afterward
Minia2a reports that after fixes shipped, realAdoptingAgents7d still showed zero. The only identity hash in the seven-day window belonged to the team’s verification client, which was excluded by digest. The author also notes that an external agent using an old tool version would retain the defect until it upgraded.
That result does not establish whether customer adoption was weak, because the metric alone cannot distinguish limited use from incomplete or inconsistent instrumentation. Nor does the post independently demonstrate that shipping the fixes changed customer behavior. The conclusion is narrower: the client path had to be audited before interpreting the market-facing number.
Quick Recap
A practical way to investigate a zero adoption metric
- Separate activity from attribution. Identify which events show usage or payment and which require a stable identity. Do not treat a transaction count and an identified-user count as interchangeable.
- Test the artifacts people actually install. The post’s audit exercised published artifacts as child processes rather than relying only on source review. Test the installed package or registry artifact that produces the request.
- Check every identity failure mode. Verify that the identity header is emitted where needed, withheld from unintended hosts, and derived consistently when identity files exist at multiple paths.
- Prove the test stimulus occurred. A “no header found” result is inconclusive unless the relevant request ran and was captured.
- Interpret the metric with coverage in view. Record which client versions and flows can contribute identities, and distinguish gaps in that coverage from evidence about user behavior.
