Yearly smartphone launches are losing their pull, even among people who follow the phone industry closely. An Android Authority reader poll published October 15, 2026, found that only 5% of respondents expressed meaningful excitement about annual releases. The largest groups were starting to lose interest (42%, or 721 votes) and outright do not care (34%, or 577 votes).
What the Android Authority poll found
The poll measured the views of Android Authority’s enthusiast readership, not a representative sample of all smartphone owners. Within that audience, enthusiasm for a new phone every year was notably weak.

| Starting to lose interest | 42% | 721 |
| Outright do not care | 34% | 577 |

Karandeep Singh Oberoi, who wrote the article, summarized the result this way: “We asked our readers how they feel about annual smartphone launches, and only 5% of respondents showed any meaningful excitement.”

Generational changes are often incremental
Many new models refine an existing design instead of solving a clear problem. A modest processor improvement, a slightly brighter display or a small camera adjustment may be useful on a specification sheet without changing how an owner uses the phone.

Longer software support extends a phone’s useful life
Long software-support commitments reduce the pressure to replace a working device after 12 months. Security updates and operating-system support can keep a phone viable for several years, making the annual cycle more relevant to manufacturers’ calendars than to owners’ needs.
Price increases make small gains harder to justify
When a new model costs more while retaining much of the previous hardware, buyers have to weigh a larger expense against a smaller practical benefit. That is especially difficult for people whose current phone is fast, reliable and still supported.

What counts as a meaningful upgrade?
The poll’s 19% minority is not rejecting new phones altogether. Those respondents are open to annual releases when the change is substantial enough to matter. Use these questions when comparing a new model with the one you already own:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- How large is the hardware change? Look beyond a new model number. Check the frame, display technology, cameras, charging system, battery and other components you actually use.
- Does it solve a real problem? A feature is meaningful when it removes a recurring annoyance or enables something your current phone cannot do.
- How long will each phone receive software support? A longer support horizon can outweigh a one-generation performance gain.
- What is the total price difference? Include launch pricing, trade-in conditions and any increase over the previous model.
- Is your existing phone old enough to replace? Someone using a four- or five-year-old phone will see a very different benefit from an annual upgrader.
Examples from recent phones
Pixel 10a: faster charging, but little else changes
The article describes the Pixel 10a as using the same Tensor G4 chip as its predecessor, with the same battery size, cameras and RAM. Its faster charging is an improvement, but the author argues that it is not enough to justify moving from a Pixel 9a—particularly after a price increase. For a Pixel 9a owner, this is an iterative update rather than a compelling reason to buy immediately.

Galaxy S26 Ultra: a change that can justify spending
The Galaxy S26 Ultra is presented as the opposite case. Its new frame, more rounded corners and Privacy Display screen are visible, functional changes. For the author, that combination is substantial enough to justify spending on the newer model.
OnePlus 13: satisfaction can end the upgrade cycle
Reader johnwilsonfiver wrote: “My latest phone is a Oneplus 13. At $ US 550.00, a great battery recharging in about 25 minutes, good camera with 3x optical zoom, I won’t be buying another phone for years.” The comment illustrates why a strong battery, rapid charging and capable camera can matter more than the arrival of a successor.

Why annual releases still matter
A weak appetite for yearly upgrades does not make annual launches pointless. New models give people replacing four- or five-year-old phones access to current processors, cameras, batteries, connectivity and support. They also provide a regular choice for buyers whose phone has failed, become insecure or no longer meets their needs.
Reader DFranch put the distinction plainly: “Just because a new phone is released annually, doesn’t mean you need to upgrade. Also, just because you aren’t looking for an upgrade doesn’t mean somebody else doesn’t have an old phone that needs replacing.”

The growing “what’s the point?” reaction
Some enthusiasts now see little reason to upgrade even when newer phones are objectively better. Reader kevriveroc said that after switching to a new Galaxy S24 Ultra—despite doing so after the S25 series had launched—they were “struggling to see the point in upgrading” to newer Pro and Ultra models from China.
That response captures the central shift: buyers are judging phones by the problems they solve, not by the fact that a new generation exists. A launch can still be exciting, but novelty alone is no longer enough for many experienced users.
The Bottom Line
Android Authority’s poll shows enthusiast sentiment turning against yearly smartphone launches: 42% are starting to lose interest, 34% outright do not care, and only 5% feel meaningful excitement. Annual releases remain useful for replacing old phones, but upgrades now need a clear, practical benefit to earn attention.
