Western Digital is not predicting that heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) hard drives will first appear in 15 years. In a July 2, 2025 interview, Chief Product and Engineering Officer Ahmed Shihab said HAMR’s underlying recording physics could support another 10, 15 or 20 years of development. That was a statement about future capacity and recording advances, not a launch date. WD’s published roadmap instead targets initial HAMR qualification by the end of 2026, volume shipments in the first half of 2027, and 100TB-plus HAMR drives around 2029.
What Western Digital actually said
Shihab’s comments, reported in an interview on July 2, 2025, covered three different stages of the technology. WD considers the basic HAMR technology functional, but still has engineering work to complete on reliability, areal density, manufacturing yield and customer qualification. He then said the physics could support “another at least 10, 15, 20 years” of recording-technology development. Read the interview context.

That wording describes HAMR as a platform with a long useful development life. It does not say WD will wait 10–20 years before selling its first HAMR product. The misleading interpretation comes from treating “how long HAMR can keep improving” as “when HAMR will emerge.”
WD’s commercial timeline
WD’s stated product targets put the first commercial deployments much sooner than 2040. The dates below are company guidance and reported targets, not guarantees of retail availability.

The 2026 qualification and first-half 2027 shipment targets were reported in coverage of WD’s roadmap and earnings commentary. Tom’s Hardware reported the qualification and shipment plan, while a later earnings-call summary also described qualification in 2026 and volume products in the first half of calendar 2027. See the earnings-call transcript summary.
At its 2026 Innovation Day, WD said its roadmap targeted 100TB-plus HAMR HDDs by about 2029. WD’s announcement also describes the wider roadmap.
What HAMR does
HAMR stands for heat-assisted magnetic recording. During a write operation, a laser briefly heats a microscopic spot on the disk. Heating lowers the medium’s resistance to the magnetic write field, so the head can record data on smaller, more stable magnetic grains. Once the spot cools, the data retains the stability needed for long-term storage.

A HAMR drive combines several components that conventional perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) does not require:

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
- High-anisotropy magnetic media, commonly based on iron-platinum (FePt) materials.
- A laser integrated into the recording head.
- An optical waveguide to carry the light.
- A near-field transducer that concentrates the optical energy into a nanoscale hot spot.
- New controls for head reliability, media uniformity, thermal behavior and manufacturing quality.
The technology addresses the magnetic-recording “trilemma.” Smaller grains increase areal density, but they become vulnerable to thermal fluctuations. More stable grains preserve data better, yet a conventional write head may not generate enough field to magnetize them. HAMR temporarily changes that balance during writing. A technical description covers the media, laser and near-field-transducer architecture.
Why the physics can work before the product is ready
“The technology works” is an important laboratory and engineering milestone, but a data-center drive must operate reliably for years at production volumes and a competitive cost per terabyte. WD still has to demonstrate all of the following:
- Consistent head, laser, optical and media performance across millions of manufacturing cycles.
- Drive reliability that meets enterprise qualification requirements.
- Enough areal density to justify the added components.
- High manufacturing yield rather than a small number of successful demonstration units.
- Firmware, signal processing and mechanical integration that work with complete storage systems.
- Supply-chain capacity for lasers, media, heads and other specialized parts.
- Qualification by hyperscale customers, whose testing can take substantial time.
Those issues explain how WD can discuss a 10–20-year development runway while still targeting a product launch in the next few years. The runway concerns successive generations of the platform; qualification concerns whether one particular drive design is ready for a customer’s environment.

HAMR is not replacing every other recording technology overnight. WD’s nearer-term path includes energy-assisted perpendicular magnetic recording (ePMR) and UltraSMR products. WD says ePMR was its first commercially deployed energy-assisted recording technology, beginning with the Ultrastar DC HC550 generation. WD explains its ePMR strategy here.

WD’s 2026 roadmap lists a 40TB UltraSMR ePMR product entering customer qualification, ePMR scaling toward approximately 60TB, and HAMR moving toward 100TB-plus capacities. These are overlapping product paths, not a single switch from ePMR to HAMR.
PMR is the conventional perpendicular recording approach. SMR overlaps adjacent tracks to increase density, which changes write behavior and workload requirements. ePMR assists the perpendicular write process without the complete HAMR laser-and-media system. HAMR uses localized heating to support smaller, more stable grains and a larger long-term density increase.
What “emerge” can mean
The headline word “emerge” hides several different milestones:
Recommended Free Tools
- Technical demonstration: the head, laser and medium can record data in a controlled test.
- Customer qualification: a specific drive design passes a cloud or enterprise customer’s reliability and compatibility testing.
- Data-center volume production: the manufacturer ships substantial quantities to enterprise customers.
- Broad retail availability: drives appear through ordinary distribution channels with public specifications, pricing and support.
WD’s 2026 and 2027 statements concern qualification and planned volume production. They do not establish when a HAMR model will appear as a WD Blue, WD Red or WD Gold retail product. WD has not, in the cited material, promised a consumer launch date, retail price or specific 100TB consumer SKU.

Why HDDs still matter in the SSD era
HAMR is aimed at the economics of mass-capacity storage, not at replacing solid-state drives in every workload. Hard drives remain attractive when organizations must store very large quantities of relatively cold, sequential or large-object data at a lower cost per terabyte than flash. WD highlights cloud storage, AI-generated data, surveillance and other capacity-heavy applications. WD’s HAMR overview explains the capacity rationale.
Shihab also emphasized that performance per terabyte and large-object throughput can matter more than very low latency in many capacity workloads. HDDs can suit write-intensive, cost-sensitive surveillance systems, while SSDs remain preferable for small-block access, caching and high-intensity reads. The interview discusses those workload distinctions.
A practical storage hierarchy therefore remains likely: flash for boot, applications, databases, caching and latency-sensitive data; HDDs for economical bulk capacity; and tape for deep archive. HAMR improves the HDD tier’s capacity per slot and potentially its cost per terabyte, but it does not provide SSD-like latency or random I/O.

Competition and alternatives
WD is not making HAMR real for the entire industry. Seagate has already commercialized its Mozaic HAMR platform for mass-capacity data-center drives and describes 30TB, 40TB and future 100TB-class development. Seagate’s platform overview is available here. The relevant WD story is therefore its effort to bring a competing HAMR product to volume production while arguing that HAMR has many generations of headroom left.

What the roadmap means for different buyers
Data-center and enterprise planners
- Ask whether a drive is CMR or SMR and whether host-managed behavior is required.
- Compare sustained throughput and performance per terabyte with random-I/O needs.
- Model power per terabyte, rack density, cooling, replacement terms and total cost of ownership.
- Confirm shelf, controller, firmware and software compatibility before adopting a new recording technology.
- Treat qualification and shipment dates as planning assumptions until your own vendor contract confirms supply.
Home NAS users
Early HAMR products are likely to be enterprise-oriented. A home NAS buyer should not delay a purchase solely for a future roadmap, especially when capacity, noise, heat, power, CMR behavior and NAS firmware support matter more than the recording method. A currently available, suitable CMR drive may be a better choice than waiting for an unannounced retail HAMR model.
Investors
HAMR offers a path to higher capacity and potentially better cost per terabyte, but it also requires development spending, manufacturing improvements and long customer qualification cycles. WD’s ePMR roadmap provides a bridge if HAMR adoption takes longer than planned. The 100TB-plus target around 2029 is forward-looking company guidance, not a guaranteed product launch or financial result.

Western Digital’s statement is best read this way: HAMR could begin entering WD’s enterprise product line within the company’s 2026–2027 target window, while the underlying technology may continue delivering capacity and recording improvements for another decade or two. “HAMR HDDs will emerge in 15 years” turns a statement about development headroom into an inaccurate first-availability forecast.
