If Windows says wdfldr.sys is missing or cannot be found, repair Windows’ protected component store instead of downloading a replacement file. The safest order is to install pending updates, run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, run sfc /scannow, provide matching Windows installation media if DISM cannot obtain repair files, and then investigate drivers or hardware if the problem returns. If Windows will not start, use offline SFC from Windows Recovery Environment.
What wdfldr.sys is—and what the message does not tell you
WDFLDR.SYS is the Windows Driver Framework loader. Windows Driver Frameworks (WDF) provide a common layer for framework-based kernel-mode and user-mode drivers, including KMDF and UMDF. During startup or device initialization, Windows loads the framework loader and selects the framework-library version required by a driver.

The filename identifies a framework component, not the defective device. A wdfldr.sys message can result from corrupted Windows component files, an incomplete update, a damaged disk, memory or firmware problems, or a third-party driver that fails while the framework is loading. The name alone cannot identify the root cause.
Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022 currently include KMDF 1.33 and UMDF 2.33. Those version numbers describe the framework shipped with those Windows releases; they are not a reason to download a similarly named file from a third-party site.

Is it safe to download wdfldr.sys?
No. Treat a standalone download as unsafe and technically unreliable. A file from a DLL or SYS download site may have the wrong Windows build, architecture, language, digital signature, dependencies, or servicing state. Replacing a protected system file by hand can also make later Windows servicing fail.
Do not delete, rename, or copy WDFLDR.SYS from another computer. Restore protected files through Windows servicing tools and a repair source that matches the installed edition as closely as possible. If a website offers a “missing DLL fixer” or asks you to disable security controls, close it.
Before changing anything: identify the exact failure
Write down what you see before running repairs. The timing determines which branch is most useful.
- Boot-time message or blue screen: photograph the complete screen, including any stop code and the named driver.
- After Windows Update: note the update date and whether the computer restarted or lost power during installation.
- When plugging in a USB or other peripheral: record the device, its manufacturer, and whether the error disappears when that device is disconnected.
- Event Viewer warning: record the provider, Event ID, timestamp, and device name rather than relying on the filename alone.
Back up important files before attempting offline repair or disk checks. Keep the original wording of the error and any crash dump or log; those details help if the issue later proves to be hardware-related.
Repair choices at a glance
| Method | Use it when | What it does | Key requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online DISM, then SFC | Windows starts and Windows Update is reachable | Repairs the component store, then scans protected system files | Administrator Command Prompt; allow each command to finish |
| DISM with an alternate source | DISM says repair files cannot be found or Windows Update cannot supply them | Uses a known-good Windows installation source instead of downloading the payload | Matching media or another documented source |
| Offline SFC in WinRE | Windows will not boot normally | Scans the Windows installation while it is offline | Correct Windows-volume letter in Recovery Environment |
| Driver and device diagnosis | The warning follows new hardware, a driver update, or a recurring device failure | Identifies, rolls back, reinstalls, or disconnects the implicated device driver | Device Manager access and the manufacturer’s official driver |
| Hardware escalation | Repairs succeed temporarily or corruption keeps returning | Checks storage, memory, firmware, and third-party drivers | CBS logs, minidumps, and Event Viewer records for support |
Step 1: install updates and restart
Open Settings > Windows Update, install all pending updates, and restart. Test the operation that produced the message only after the restart completes.
WDF files are serviced as part of Windows. A partially applied update can leave component files inconsistent, so completing the update cycle can resolve the condition without replacing any file manually. If the same message returns, continue with DISM and SFC rather than repeating the restart indefinitely.
Step 2: run DISM and SFC in an elevated Command Prompt
Use an administrator Command Prompt, not a standard user window:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command and wait for it to reach completion:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DISM normally obtains replacement component files through Windows Update. It can appear to pause for a long time at one percentage; do not close the window while it is working. Microsoft’s guidance describes DISM as providing the files required to repair corrupted files.
When DISM finishes, run System File Checker in the same elevated window:
sfc /scannow
SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies with a cached, known-good version when possible. Wait for the verification to reach 100 percent, then restart and reproduce the original action.
How to read the SFC result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: the protected-file scan found no corruption. Continue with driver and device checks if the message remains.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”: restart and test again. The repaired component may not be active until reboot.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”: preserve the CBS log, then run the alternate-source or offline procedure below as appropriate.
Do not run SFC repeatedly as a substitute for finding a missing repair source. If the component store itself lacks the required payload, SFC may report the same unrepairable files until DISM is supplied with matching source files.

Step 3: give DISM a matching repair source
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, Windows Update is unavailable, or the component store cannot be repaired, use a running Windows installation, a network share, or removable installation media as an alternate source. A Windows 11 installation USB is useful only when it matches the installed Windows version, edition, architecture, and language as closely as possible; it is not a universal fix for every wdfldr.sys message.
After connecting or mounting the source, identify the folder that contains the Windows repair files. Then run the documented pattern below from an elevated Command Prompt, replacing the example path with the actual source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
/LimitAccess tells DISM not to contact Windows Update while it uses the supplied source. A mismatched source can fail just as surely as a missing source, so verify the media before starting. Do not buy or install a random “DLL repair” package; it does not provide a supported Windows servicing source.
When the source-based DISM run completes successfully, run sfc /scannow again, restart, and test. If the source is rejected, obtain media corresponding to the installed release and edition rather than forcing a different image.

When Windows cannot start normally, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE): interrupt startup according to your PC manufacturer’s recovery procedure, or boot from Windows installation media and choose Repair your computer. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
WinRE can assign a different letter to the Windows volume. Do not assume it is C:. At the prompt, use commands such as dir C:Windows, dir D:Windows, and so on until you find the installation containing the Windows directory. Substitute that letter in the offline command:

For example, if the Windows directory is on D:, use /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:Windows. Let SFC finish, record its final message, and restart. If the disk shows signs of corruption, Microsoft also recommends checking it with:
chkdsk /f /r
chkdsk /f /r can take a long time, especially on a large or failing drive. Keep the computer connected to power and do not interrupt it. Repeated disk errors, disappearing files, or repairs that work only briefly are reasons to stop normal troubleshooting and arrange storage diagnostics and a backup.

Step 5: investigate drivers and devices
If the message started after installing hardware or a driver, disconnect nonessential peripherals and test again. Then open Device Manager and look for warning icons. Expand the categories related to the device named in the error, such as USB controllers, display adapters, sound, network adapters, or storage controllers.
Update from the correct source
Use the PC maker’s or device maker’s official support page for the exact model and installed Windows edition. Install the recommended driver, restart, and test. Avoid substituting a generic package when the manufacturer supplies a model-specific driver.
Roll back a newly changed driver
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties in Device Manager, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when Windows makes that option available. Restart and verify whether the device initializes normally. A rollback is a diagnostic step, not proof that WDFLDR.SYS itself was defective.
Reinstall a damaged device entry
For a device that remains flagged, record its model and driver details first. In Device Manager, choose Uninstall device, restart, and then install the verified driver from the manufacturer if Windows does not reinstall it automatically. Do not uninstall a critical storage or boot device casually; if you are unsure which entry controls the system, obtain manufacturer guidance first.

A common related entry is a WUDFRd warning with Event ID 219. Microsoft explains that this can occur because the User-Mode Driver Framework has not started yet; Windows retries the load. If the device works and the event is a one-time or occasional startup warning, Microsoft’s guidance says there is no need to do anything unless the events are logged continuously.
Continuous Event ID 219 entries, a device that disappears, repeated reconnects, or a crash at the same time require investigation. Correlate the event timestamp with Device Manager warnings, recent driver changes, USB power or cable changes, and the original symptom. Repairing WDFLDR.SYS will not correct a defective peripheral, unstable firmware, or a third-party driver that keeps failing.
When the error keeps coming back
Persistent failures after online DISM/SFC, a matching repair source, offline repair, and driver checks point beyond a simple missing-file message. Possible causes include storage degradation, memory corruption, firmware problems, or a faulty third-party driver.
- Preserve the CBS log from SFC, any minidumps, and the relevant Event Viewer entries.
- Record the exact stop code, device name, Windows edition, and the time the failure occurs.
- Run the PC manufacturer’s storage and memory diagnostics if available, and back up data before a suspected drive failure worsens.
- Give the collected records to the PC manufacturer or Microsoft support. Do not copy WDFLDR.SYS from another PC as a workaround.
Windows 10 support timing matters
Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 after October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 installation can still be repaired with the procedures above, but the absence of ongoing free servicing affects what updates and repair payloads are available. Confirm the Windows edition and support options for the specific PC before planning a long-term fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
What to conclude from a wdfldr.sys message
The filename is a clue that Windows Driver Framework loading is involved, not a diagnosis and not an invitation to download a replacement. Complete Windows Update, use DISM followed by SFC, supply a matching repair source when necessary, switch to offline SFC if Windows cannot boot, and then isolate the device or driver implicated by the timing. If corruption returns, treat storage, memory, firmware, and third-party drivers as possible root causes and preserve the logs needed for escalation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I copy wdfldr.sys from another Windows computer?
No. The other computer may have a different Windows build, edition, architecture, signature, dependencies, or servicing state. Use DISM, SFC, and a matching Windows repair source instead.
Does a one-time WUDFRd Event ID 219 warning mean Windows is broken?
Not necessarily. Microsoft says the warning can occur before the User-Mode Driver Framework starts and can be safely ignored when it is not continuous and the device works normally. Repeated events or a malfunctioning device require driver and hardware investigation.
Why does DISM say it cannot find source files?
DISM normally uses Windows Update. If the required payload is unavailable there, provide a running Windows installation, network share, or removable installation source that matches the installed version, edition, architecture, and language as closely as possible.
What if SFC finds files it cannot repair?
Save the CBS log, run DISM with a suitable repair source, and run SFC again. If Windows will not boot, use offline SFC from WinRE with the correct Windows-volume letter.
Is a Windows 11 installation USB always required?
No. Online DISM and SFC are the least invasive first steps when Windows runs and Windows Update is available. Installation media is conditional: use it when DISM cannot obtain the required files and ensure it matches the installed Windows image.
