Yes—the WD_BLACK SN850 is compatible with PS5 when you choose a suitable model and install it correctly. WD’s PS5-specific materials cover the SN850 with a heatsink, and its 1TB model is rated for sequential reads up to 7,000 MB/s, above Sony’s 5,500 MB/s recommendation. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of game load times or performance identical to the console’s built-in SSD.
Which SN850 model fits a PS5?
Check the product name, capacity, and exact model identifier before buying. The SN850 is a PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD, and WD’s PS5-specific data sheet identifies the heatsink-equipped SN850 for PS5 use. WD also sells bare SN850 variants. The separate SN850P is a related but distinct product family, with its own specifications and model identifiers; the names are not interchangeable.

For a simpler installation, the SN850 with a built-in heatsink avoids choosing and fitting a separate cooling structure. A bare SN850 can also be considered, but its heatsink must fit within Sony’s size limits. Check the drive and cooling hardware together, rather than assuming any heatsink will fit a 2280 SSD. Sony’s current online support guidance lists these requirements for an M.2 SSD added to a PS5. Confirm that the exact drive and any cooling hardware meet them before installation.

These figures are Sony’s compatibility guidance, not a claim that every drive meeting them is guaranteed to work. Sony says it cannot guarantee that every third-party M.2 SSD will function. Its full guidance is available in How to add an M.2 SSD to a PS5 console.
What does the SN850’s speed rating mean?
WD rates the 1TB SN850 at up to 7,000 MB/s sequential read and 5,300 MB/s sequential write, according to its 2022 product data sheet. The read rating exceeds Sony’s recommended 5,500 MB/s threshold. These are WD’s advertised maximums for that capacity—not measurements of the drive inside a PS5, nor a promise of faster loading in a particular game.

Sony cautions that even M.2 SSDs with sequential read speeds above 5,500 MB/s may not deliver the same performance in every game as the PS5’s internal SSD. No independent SN850-in-PS5 benchmark or direct comparison is established here, so specific load-time improvements or performance parity should not be inferred from the specification alone.

Once installed and formatted, compatible M.2 storage can be used to download, copy, update, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, and to use media apps. PS5 games can be played directly from M.2 storage. By contrast, PS5 games stored on USB extended storage must be copied back to console storage or M.2 storage before they can be played. Sony also says all data for one game must be stored in one place.

Cooling and installation points to check
Sony requires effective heat dissipation for an M.2 SSD, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. A single-sided cooling structure is easier to fit. If the SN850 variant already has a built-in heatsink, Sony recommends against adding another one; stacking cooling hardware may reduce effectiveness.
- Update the PS5 system software before adding the drive, as Sony advises.
- Confirm the SN850’s capacity and exact variant, and check that the SSD plus its cooling hardware fit Sony’s interface, length, width, and thickness requirements.
- Follow Sony’s installation instructions for your console. After installation, the PS5 will prompt you to format the M.2 SSD; formatting erases data on that drive.
If a game stored on M.2 storage has problems, Sony advises moving it to the console’s internal storage.

Will installing an M.2 SSD affect the PS5 warranty?
Sony’s general guidance says manufacturer warranty coverage should not be affected when the M.2 drive meets the required specifications and installation instructions are followed properly. Sony also says damage caused by failing to follow those instructions may not be covered. This is general guidance, not a guarantee for every regional warranty term or every type of damage.

The heatsink-equipped WD_BLACK SN850 is a credible PS5-compatible choice on specifications: WD identifies it for PS5 use, and the 1TB model’s rated sequential read speed is above Sony’s recommendation. Verify the exact model and physical fit, install it with effective cooling, and treat the speed figures as manufacturer ratings rather than a promise of specific in-game results.
