The WD SES Device USB Device driver is a management driver for some Western Digital external USB enclosures. SES stands for SCSI Enclosure Services. It can provide drive-volume information, password-protection controls and LED control, but it is not the basic storage driver: Windows can normally recognize the disk and let you read and write files without it. If Windows repeatedly asks for the driver, install it through Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog, or install the WD software for the exact drive family. If an old SES driver blocks Windows Memory Integrity, remove that legacy package rather than assuming the disk itself is failing.
What the WD SES Device USB Device driver does
External WD drives expose more than one USB function. The mass-storage function handles ordinary disk access. The SES function handles enclosure-level features. SanDisk and Western Digital describe SES as the interface used to obtain external-drive volume information, enable password protection and control drive LEDs.

That distinction explains why a drive can appear in File Explorer even when Device Manager shows “WD SES Device USB Device” as unknown or requests a driver. The official support wording is explicit: “The WD SES Driver is not required for the drive to be recognized by Windows.” A missing SES package usually affects management features or the recurring hardware-wizard prompt, not the disk’s ability to store files.

What SES is not
- It is not the primary Windows mass-storage driver.
- It is not evidence that the hard disk has failed.
- It is not automatically required just because the enclosure appears in Device Manager.
Western Digital manuals also state: “The SES Driver is installed automatically when you install the WD software.” If you do not install that software, you can install the SES component separately when you want the enclosure features or want to stop Windows from asking for it.

When you need the driver—and when you do not
| Situation | Recommended action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The drive appears in File Explorer and files open normally | Leave the SES driver alone unless you need its enclosure features or Windows keeps prompting | Basic recognition does not depend on SES |
| Windows shows an unknown WD SES device after you connect the drive | Try Windows Update first, then the Microsoft Update Catalog | Those are the preferred sources for current Windows packages |
| You use WD software for the drive | Install or repair the software for the exact drive family | The SES driver is installed automatically with WD software |
| An older SES driver is listed as incompatible with Memory Integrity | Uninstall the old SES device and remove its driver software, then restart | Legacy SES packages can prevent the Windows security feature from being enabled |
| The drive is still an unknown device after installation | Check the exact enclosure model’s manual and support package | SES behavior differs among product generations |
Before changing anything
Confirm the symptom
Connect the WD drive directly to the computer, not through a USB hub or dock. Confirm whether you can browse the drive and copy a small test file. In Windows, open Device Manager (right-click Start, then choose Device Manager) and look under Other devices or Universal Serial Bus controllers for “WD SES Device USB Device,” an unknown device, or a warning icon.
Write down the drive’s model name and the Windows edition and architecture. The exact model matters because older and newer enclosures use different SES packages. Do not select a package solely because its name contains “WD”; match the enclosure and Windows generation.
Protect your data first
A driver change should not erase files, but any hardware troubleshooting can expose an already unstable connection. Eject the drive normally before disconnecting it, and keep a backup of important data. If Windows reports read errors, unusual noises or repeated disconnects, treat those as a separate storage-health issue rather than trying to solve them by forcing an SES installation.
Install the WD SES driver through Windows Update
Windows Update is the safest first choice for a supported system because it can select a package for the installed Windows generation and architecture.

- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
- Connect the WD external drive directly to the PC and wait for Windows to finish detecting USB devices.
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update. On Windows 11, check Advanced options and Optional updates if a driver update is not shown on the main page. On Windows 10, the equivalent optional-driver area may appear under View optional updates.
- Install a WD SES or WDC_SAM driver update if Windows offers one. Allow the installation to complete without unplugging the drive.
- Restart when Windows requests it, then reconnect the drive and check Device Manager again.
If Windows Update reports that the best driver is already installed but the warning remains, continue with the Microsoft Update Catalog method rather than repeatedly selecting the same automatic search.
Use the Microsoft Update Catalog
The Microsoft Update Catalog contains WD SES Device packages for Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10 and later. Catalog records include releases dated 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2020, so the newest entry is not automatically correct for every enclosure. One catalog record identifies Western Digital’s WDC_SAM driver as version 4.55.25.661, released 2020-07-06.
- Open the Microsoft Update Catalog and search for
WD SES DeviceorWDC_SAM. - Compare the result’s Windows coverage, processor architecture and release date with your system and the drive’s model manual.
- Download the package that matches those details. Avoid installing an x86 package on a 64-bit Windows installation or choosing an older package merely because it appears first.
- Run the downloaded installer, or follow the package’s installation instructions if it is supplied as a driver archive. Keep the drive connected during setup.
- Restart Windows if prompted. In Device Manager, open the WD SES device’s properties and confirm that the warning icon has cleared.
Catalog entries are a source of driver packages, not a guarantee that every package supports every WD enclosure. If the installation fails or the device remains unknown, stop trying unrelated versions and move to the exact model documentation.
Install the driver with WD software
If your drive family has compatible WD software, installing that software is the normal bundled route. The WD manual wording is direct: “The SES Driver is installed automatically when you install the WD software.” Use the installer intended for the exact product generation, allow it to finish, restart if requested, and then reconnect the drive.

This route is useful when you need password-protection controls, volume information or LED management in addition to file access. If you only need the disk to appear in File Explorer, the extra management software is optional; Windows can generally use the drive without SES.
Legacy systems and older enclosures
For legacy Windows installations or older WD enclosures, SanDisk support documents separate x86 and x64 SES setup packages. Choose the package that matches the Windows architecture, run setup with the drive attached, and restart after installation. Do not assume that a package for a newer product family will work with an older enclosure.
Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 are represented in the catalog, but current Windows security features and driver policies differ from those systems. If a package is listed for Windows 10 and later, verify the exact model and operating-system wording before installing it on an older edition.

Windows Memory Integrity can identify an older WD SES component as incompatible. SanDisk support provides a removal procedure that uninstalls the device and deletes its driver software. Removing SES can disable enclosure-management functions, but it should not normally remove the mass-storage function that lets Windows access the disk.

- Open Windows Security, choose Device security, then open Core isolation details and check Memory integrity. If Windows lists an incompatible driver, note the driver or device name before changing it.
- Close WD utilities and safely eject the external drive. If the incompatible entry identifies the WD SES device, open Device Manager and locate that entry under Other devices or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the WD SES device, choose Uninstall device, and select the option to remove or delete the driver software when Windows presents it. Do not remove an unrelated storage-controller entry.
- Restart Windows. Recheck the Core isolation page and test ordinary file access after reconnecting the drive.
- If you still need SES features, install a package intended for the exact enclosure and Windows version. If the warning returns, leave the legacy package removed and use the drive as a standard USB storage device.
Do not repeatedly reinstall an old package simply to clear a Device Manager label. The security objective is to remove the incompatible component; the disk’s basic recognition is a separate function.

Windows asks for the driver every time you plug in the drive
First install the SES package through Windows Update. If the prompt continues, install the correct package from the Microsoft Update Catalog or the drive’s model-specific WD software. A recurring prompt can also mean that the enclosure is an older generation for which the current package is not appropriate.
The drive works, but the SES device has a yellow warning icon
That symptom is consistent with a missing management driver, not necessarily a bad disk. Verify that files open and copy normally. Install SES only if you need its management functions or want to clear the warning; otherwise, basic use can continue without it.

The installer says the driver is incompatible
Stop and check Windows architecture, edition and the exact enclosure model. Older x86 and x64 setup packages are not interchangeable. Prefer Windows Update or a catalog entry that explicitly covers your Windows generation. If Memory Integrity identifies the old package, remove it instead of forcing installation.

The drive disappears after a driver change
Disconnect and reconnect it directly to another USB port, then check Disk Management and Device Manager. If the disk is still absent, undo the last driver change through Device Manager or System Restore and consult the model manual. Do not format the disk as a first response; formatting can destroy data and does not repair an SES mismatch.
Windows recognizes the drive but WD features do not work
SES supplies enclosure-management functions such as password protection and LED control. Confirm that the installed software and driver belong to the same product family. A generic storage connection can remain functional even when those management features are unavailable.
Driver choices at a glance
| Source or package | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Supported current Windows installations | Try this before manually downloading a package |
| Microsoft Update Catalog | Manual selection or systems where Windows Update does not offer SES | WD entries cover Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10 and later; match architecture and model |
| WD software installer | Users who need WD enclosure-management features | The SES driver installs automatically with the WD software |
| Legacy x86/x64 setup packages | Older enclosures and legacy Windows systems | Use the architecture-specific package and restart after setup |
| No SES installation | Drives that already provide reliable file access | Basic Windows recognition generally continues without SES |
Is the WD SES driver safe?
The SES function itself is a legitimate Western Digital enclosure component. The practical safety issue is source and compatibility: obtain it from Windows Update, the Microsoft Update Catalog or official WD/SanDisk support documentation, and match it to the exact model and Windows version. Avoid unidentified driver-download sites and do not disable Memory Integrity to keep an old package installed. A prompt for SES, by itself, is not proof of malware or a failing hard disk.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- SES means SCSI Enclosure Services and manages enclosure features rather than ordinary disk I/O.
- Windows can generally recognize and use a WD external drive without the SES driver.
- Windows Update is the first manual installation choice; the Microsoft Update Catalog is the next option when automatic search does not help.
- WD software installs SES automatically, while older enclosures may require separate x86 or x64 packages and a restart.
- Legacy SES drivers can block Windows Memory Integrity; remove the incompatible package when Windows identifies it.
- Compatibility depends on the enclosure model, Windows generation and system architecture.
