Western Digital lists the current product-page model, WD8005FFBX, as a 3.5-inch, 7200 RPM CMR SATA drive with a five-year limited warranty. Its stated performance and workload figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
Which 8TB WD Red Pro is this review about?
“WD Red Pro 8TB” can refer to two model numbers in Western Digital’s materials: WD8005FFBX on the current product page and WD8003FFBX in the Red Pro datasheet. They share several listed specifications, but do not assume every figure applies identically to both. Check the model number on the listing or drive label before you buy.

| Specification | WD’s listing for WD8005FFBX |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 8TB |
| Form factor and interface | 3.5-inch SATA |
| Recording technology | CMR |
| Spindle speed | 7200 RPM |
| Cache | 256MB |
| Transfer rate | Up to 235MB/s on the product page |
| Workload rate | Up to 550TB per year |
| Operating temperature | 0°C to 65°C |
| Limited warranty | Five years; confirm the terms for your region and seller |
These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. The datasheet uses a different transfer-rate label: it lists 267MB/s as the WD8005FFBX internal transfer rate, while its WD8003FFBX entry lists a 235MB/s maximum internal transfer rate. The current product page gives up to 235MB/s for WD8005FFBX. Those terms and figures are not interchangeable, so avoid treating them as a single independently verified speed result.
#1 Best Overall
- Available in capacities ranging from 2 to 24TB(1) | (1) 1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.
- For RAID-optimized NAS systems with unlimited number of bays
- Rated for 550TB/yr workload rate(2) | (2) Annualized Workload Rate = TB transferred x (8760 / recorded power-on hours). The maximum rated workload is specified for operating at typical temperature of 40C. Workload Rate will vary depending on your hardware and software components and configurations.
- Designed to handle the demands of high-intensity 24x7 multi-user NAS environments
- Western Digital partners with a wide range of NAS system vendors for extensive testing to ensure compatibility with most NAS enclosures
Is it suitable for a demanding NAS?
WD positions Red Pro drives for high-intensity, 24×7, multi-user NAS environments and RAID-optimized NAS systems. The 550TB-per-year workload rating is WD’s stated limit for the WD8005FFBX, not a guarantee of a particular speed, uptime, or lifespan. It can help you assess whether the drive’s intended workload category matches your needs, but it does not establish compatibility with every NAS, RAID controller, or operating system.
Check your NAS before ordering
- Look up WD8005FFBX on the NAS manufacturer’s compatibility list. Support for another Red Pro model does not automatically confirm support for this one.
- Confirm the enclosure supports 8TB drives and has a compatible 3.5-inch SATA bay.
- Consider your expected annual data transfers and whether the workload fits WD’s stated 550TB-per-year rating.
- Check the warranty terms that apply in your region and through your chosen seller.
WD8005FFBX versus WD8003FFBX
Both are listed as 8TB WD Red Pro drives, and the datasheet shows CMR recording, SATA, a 3.5-inch form factor, 7200 RPM, 256MB cache, a 550TB-per-year workload rate, and a five-year limited warranty for WD8003FFBX. The datasheet lists a 235MB/s maximum internal transfer rate for WD8003FFBX. For WD8005FFBX, the datasheet instead lists 267MB/s internal transfer rate; the current product page states up to 235MB/s transfer rate.

Because the sources use different transfer-rate labels and do not explain the difference, compare the exact model numbers and source wording rather than assuming the figures are directly comparable. Confirm the model being sold and its fit with your NAS before choosing between listings.
What WD’s reliability figures do—and don’t—tell you
WD’s current product-page copy describes the Red Pro range as rated up to 2.5 million hours MTBF, while its datasheet gives 2,000,000 hours for the listed Red Pro models. The published materials therefore do not establish one unambiguous MTBF figure for WD8005FFBX. MTBF is a population-level statistical estimate under stated operating assumptions, not a prediction of how long an individual drive will last and not a warranty period.

- Enterprise-class reliability and performance
- 5-year limited warranty (5) |See Official Western Digital website for warranty details
- 550TB per year workload rating (3) | Workload Rate is defined as the amount of user data transferred to/from the hard drive.
- Up to 2.5 million hours Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF)
Noise, value, and the limits of this review
The cited manufacturer material does not establish how loud WD8005FFBX is in a particular NAS, how it performs in independent benchmarks, or whether it is good value at a given price. Noise and real-world results can depend on the NAS chassis and the rest of the system; make any comparison using consistent independent testing rather than inferring it from the specifications here.
To decide whether it is worth buying, weigh the exact model’s specifications and warranty against your required capacity, expected workload, NAS compatibility, and the price available to you. Compare alternatives only at the same capacity and with model-specific evidence; the available specifications alone do not support a performance ranking.
