To unlock a supported Western Digital external drive, connect it directly, open WD Security or the drive’s WD Unlocker virtual CD, select the locked drive, enter its existing password, and choose Unlock Drive. WD Drive Unlock cannot bypass or recover a forgotten password. If the password is lost, Western Digital’s documented way to reuse the drive is to erase it, which destroys accessible data.
What WD Drive Unlock does
WD Drive Unlock is Western Digital’s password-entry utility for supported direct-attached drives. You normally reach it in one of two ways: through the WD Security application, or through a WD Unlocker virtual CD that appears in Windows Explorer or macOS Finder when a locked drive is connected and WD Security is not installed.

The password protects the drive rather than a particular computer account. A drive that is locked on one computer remains locked when moved to another computer until the correct password is entered. Western Digital documentation describes the utility for several product families, including:
- My Passport variants
- My Book models
- WD Drive Plus
- Selected easystore products
- WD Elements SE
- WD Backup Drive Desktop
Support differs by exact model, firmware and operating system. Check the label on the drive and the current Western Digital or SanDisk support page before installing software or choosing an erase command.
#1 Best Overall

- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Unlock the drive with the official procedure
1. Connect the drive directly
- Connect the WD drive to the computer with its USB cable and allow it to power up.
- For the most reliable detection, connect it directly to the computer rather than through a hub or dock.
- If more than one supported WD drive is connected, identify the one that is locked before entering a password.
2. Use WD Security
- Open WD Security.
- If the application shows multiple supported drives, select the locked drive.
- Enter the password that was created for that drive. Passwords are case-sensitive if the original setup treated uppercase and lowercase as different characters.
- Choose Unlock Drive.
- Wait for the unlock confirmation, then open the drive in File Explorer or Finder and verify that your folders and files are available.
Do not guess repeatedly if the data is important. The unlock utility accepts the existing password; it is not a password-reset or bypass tool.
3. Use the WD Unlocker virtual CD when WD Security is unavailable
- Open File Explorer in Windows or Finder in macOS.
- Look for a virtual CD named WD Unlocker associated with the connected drive.
- Open that virtual CD and launch the unlock utility.
- If more than one supported drive is attached, select the locked one.
- Enter the existing password and choose Unlock Drive.
The virtual CD is a fallback path documented for a locked drive when WD Security is not installed. It will not help if the drive’s built-in unlocker is not appearing, the model is unsupported, or the password is unknown.
4. Decide whether to enable auto-unlock
After a successful unlock, WD Security may offer an auto-unlock option for the current computer. Enable it only after confirming that the password works and that you understand the security trade-off: anyone who can use that computer may be able to access the drive while it is connected. Auto-unlock is stored for the selected computer, not as a replacement password on the drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy the drive locks again
Relocking is expected behavior for a password-protected WD drive. The My Passport manual says the drive locks after shutdown or disconnection and, in some configurations, when the computer enters sleep. If it becomes inaccessible after one of those events, reconnect it or wake the computer and repeat the normal unlock procedure.
Rank #2
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Auto-unlock can remember the password on the computer where it was enabled, but it does not remove the drive’s password protection. Moving the drive to another computer, changing computers, or using a computer where auto-unlock was not configured still requires the password.
When WD Unlocker appears but the files remain inaccessible
Confirm that you unlocked the correct device
Multiple WD drives can be attached at once. Compare the model or capacity shown in WD Security with the physical label before selecting Unlock Drive. Unlocking a different drive will not make the intended one accessible.
Check that the password is the original drive password
WD Drive Unlock does not accept a Windows account password, a cloud-service password or a newly created password unless that password was also set on the WD drive. If the existing password is not known, stop before any erase or reset command.
Try the alternate official access path
If WD Security is installed but does not show the drive, check whether the WD Unlocker virtual CD appears in File Explorer or Finder. Conversely, if the virtual CD is visible but its utility does not open, use the current software guidance for the exact model. Availability can vary as WD changes application distribution and operating-system support.

Verify model and software compatibility
WD’s supported list covers particular My Passport, My Book, WD Drive Plus, easystore, WD Elements SE and WD Backup Drive Desktop products, not every external drive carrying the WD name. Read the exact model number from the enclosure and confirm that the installed application supports it. A product that is physically detected can still lack a compatible unlock application.
Separate an unlock problem from a hardware problem
If the drive does not power on, repeatedly disconnects, makes unusual sounds or is absent from both the operating system and the unlock utility, treat that as a possible connection or hardware fault rather than a password failure. Preserve the drive and its cable, avoid initializing or formatting prompts, and consider a specialist assessment if the data matters.
What to do if you forgot the WD password
Western Digital states that technical support cannot recover a lost or forgotten password. WD Drive Unlock cannot reveal, bypass or reset it while preserving the protected data. The documented outcome is an erase of the drive before it can be used again.
First, decide whether the data is worth preserving
Do not start Drive Erase merely to test whether it fixes the problem. Erasing is data-destructive, so the files that are currently inaccessible should be treated as potentially unrecoverable after the operation. Make a written decision about the value of the data before proceeding.

For irreplaceable files, seek a professional data-recovery assessment before paying for a service or authorizing an erase. Ask the provider whether it has experience with the exact WD model and password-encrypted external drives, what diagnostic work is included, the total cost if recovery is impossible, and whether the assessment itself changes the drive. No provider can be assumed to recover a forgotten WD password.
Erase the drive only when reuse is the priority
When the data is no longer needed, follow the current Western Digital instructions for your exact model and use the documented erase or reset function. The operation removes the protection state so the drive can be set up again, but it permanently destroys accessible data. Confirm the target drive several times before accepting an erase prompt.
After the reset completes, initialize or format the drive only as directed for that model, then create a new password and record it in a secure password manager. If you enable auto-unlock, remember that it applies to the computer where it was configured and does not serve as a portable copy of the password.

Western Digital published a separate encryption-security advisory for some older My Book and My Passport models. Its procedure requires copying all data to another drive before using Drive Erase to reset the encryption keys. The advisory labels the process “Data Destructive” and says it cannot be undone.
Best Value
- World’s First 6TB 2.5” Portable Hard Drive
- Slim durable design to help take your important files with you
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- Back up smarter with included device management software[2] with defense against ransomware
- Help secure your important files with password protection and hardware encryption
That warning changes the order of operations: back up the complete contents first, verify that the backup opens, and only then perform the key-reset procedure if you have decided that reuse is necessary. If you cannot access the data because the password is forgotten, the backup step is not possible; in that case, stop and obtain a recovery assessment rather than assuming the older-drive procedure will preserve files.

SanDisk’s WD Security end-of-support notice says the application was removed from the Software Downloads area on July 31, 2025. The notice directs users toward the SANDISK App for supported password and encryption functions. This does not mean every WD product is supported by that app. Application availability, operating-system support and model compatibility can change, so use the current official support page for the exact drive before downloading replacement software.
If an old installation of WD Security still runs, it may provide the expected unlock screen for a compatible drive, but an unsupported operating system or model can produce missing-device or failed-launch behavior. Do not download an unlock utility from an unofficial mirror when the official support page does not list your model.

Practical checks before you erase anything
- Write down the exact model and serial information from the enclosure.
- Search all of your password-manager entries and secure records for the drive password, including older entries created when the drive was first configured.
- Check whether another computer already has auto-unlock enabled; that can restore access without revealing the stored password, but it does not transfer protection to a new computer.
- Do not accept Windows prompts to initialize, format or repair the disk while you are still deciding whether the files need recovery.
- For an older encrypted model, follow the advisory’s backup-first order and treat Drive Erase as irreversible.
If WD Security, File Explorer or another Windows component is malfunctioning around an otherwise known password, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for addressing more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, along with settings, temporary-file, privacy and vulnerability checks. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, cannot recover a forgotten WD password or repair every crash, and offers a category-based free trial of at least two days before a subscription.
