Waze Problems Explained: 5 Common Issues and Step-by-Step Fixes

Most Waze failures come from one of four layers: the phone’s GPS and permissions, the internet connection used for route calculation, map data, or the connection to your car display. Fix the layer that is actually failing instead of immediately reinstalling the app. Start with the quick diagnosis below, then follow the matching procedure while parked.

Quick diagnosis: which part is failing?

What you see Most likely layer First check
“No GPS,” drifting position, or a frozen location Phone location, GPS reception, or Waze permission Enable location, verify Waze permission, then test GPS outdoors
“No route” or “Routing server” error Mobile data, Wi-Fi-to-cellular transition, or route settings Confirm a strong connection and reopen Waze
The destination pin is in the wrong place Address or place data supplied by a third party Check the pin and identify the provider of the result
The route is legal but unexpectedly different Map connections, traffic/speed data, or route preference Review route settings and compare the available alternatives
No spoken directions Waze sound mode, guidance volume, or voice data Turn sound on and raise guidance volume
Waze works on the phone but not on the car screen Android Auto, CarPlay, cable, head unit, or vehicle integration Disconnect the phone and test Waze directly on it

Exact menu names differ by phone manufacturer, operating-system version, Waze version, and vehicle. Android location instructions can also differ between Android 11 and Android 12 or later. Change settings only when the vehicle is parked.

1. Waze says “No GPS” or shows an inaccurate location

A GPS warning is usually a phone-location problem before it is a Waze problem. Waze needs the phone’s location service enabled and permission to use it. A car display does not create a separate GPS receiver for Waze: the app normally receives location from the phone.

Check location and Waze permission

  1. Park the vehicle and open the phone’s system Settings.
  2. Make sure the main Location service is enabled.
  3. Open the app-permission page for Waze and allow location access. On phones that offer a choice, select the option that lets Waze use location while you use the app; if your device provides an “always” option and you need background navigation, review that setting as well.
  4. Return to Waze and wait in an open area for the position to settle.

Manufacturers label these controls differently, so use your phone’s Settings search for “Location” or “App permissions” if the path is not identical. Do not confuse location permission with microphone permission: the latter is used for voice search or voice reporting, not for receiving spoken navigation.

Use Waze’s outdoor GPS test

Waze’s GPS troubleshooting guidance recommends a hard reboot of the phone, followed by a GPS test outdoors with a GPS-status application. Hold the phone where it has a clear view of the sky rather than inside a building, underground garage, or a heavily shielded dashboard compartment.

That guide treats an indicated GPS accuracy below 35 metres as working GPS. An accuracy reading of 0 metres or a reading above 35 metres is treated as evidence that the receiver is not working properly, and Waze advises contacting the phone manufacturer in that situation. The 35-metre figure is an operational troubleshooting threshold from Waze, not a guarantee that every navigation position will always be within 35 metres.

Separate a phone-wide fault from a Waze-only fault

  • Open another navigation or GPS-status app outdoors. If several apps cannot obtain a position, continue with the phone maker’s support path rather than changing Waze settings repeatedly.
  • If other apps locate you normally but Waze does not, restart Waze and then reinstall it if necessary. Reinstallation removes local app data, so make sure you know any account details or settings you need to restore.
  • Move the phone to a position with a less obstructed view of the sky. Waze’s community FAQ says the device needs an unobstructed view of the sky to operate properly. A secure mount can help position the phone, but it cannot repair a disabled permission, a failing receiver, or absent mobile data.

If the phone fails the outdoor test across applications, record the accuracy reading and contact the phone manufacturer. If only Waze fails after permissions and a restart, use Waze Help for app-specific support.

2. “No route” or “Routing server” errors

Waze calculates routes through an online connection. A weak signal, slow data, or a handoff from Wi-Fi to mobile data can leave the app unable to contact the routing service even when other phone functions appear normal.

Restore a usable connection

  1. Confirm that the phone shows a working Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. If the signal is weak, move to a location with better coverage before starting navigation.
  2. If you have just left Wi-Fi, wait a few seconds for mobile data to take over. A route error immediately after that transition is specifically noted in Waze Help.
  3. Close Waze completely, reopen it, and request the route again.
  4. If the error remains, check GPS using the procedure in the previous section. A route request can fail when the app also cannot establish a reliable position.

Do not assume that a route error means the destination is invalid. The server may simply be unreachable at that moment.

Review route restrictions

Waze’s community FAQ notes that a restrictive preference such as Avoid toll roads can contribute to a routing-server error when toll roads are the only routes the server knows for an area. Treat this as community guidance rather than a universal explanation: road availability and map data vary by region.

Open Waze’s route settings, review toll and other avoidance options, and temporarily remove an option that could eliminate every available route. Request the route again, then restore your preferred setting after you have identified whether it was involved. Changing an avoidance preference does not fix a lost data connection; it only tests whether your constraints leave the server with no usable alternative.

When the error is intermittent

  • Note whether it occurs only in a particular coverage dead zone or immediately after leaving Wi-Fi.
  • Try the same destination after the phone has a stable cellular signal.
  • If other apps also report that they are offline, troubleshoot the carrier, Wi-Fi network, or phone data setting.
  • If Waze alone repeatedly fails while the phone is online, restart the app and then contact Waze Help with the exact error wording.

3. The destination pin is wrong, or the route looks wrong

“Wrong destination” and “surprising route” are different problems. First verify that Waze is navigating to the place you intended; only then judge the route it selected.

Correct a misplaced destination

  1. Look closely at the destination pin before starting navigation. Zoom in far enough to see which entrance, road, or neighboring property it marks.
  2. Check the address or place-result details and identify the source of the listing when Waze displays that information.
  3. If the coordinate is wrong, report the error to the provider that supplied the address or place data. Waze’s community FAQ says coordinates can come from third-party content providers. For address lookups in the United States and Canada, it identifies Google; providers can differ in other countries and for place-search results.
  4. Until the listing is corrected, search for a nearby street address, intersection, or entrance that places the pin where you actually need to arrive.

A correction to a third-party listing may not appear immediately. Confirm the pin each time you navigate to a location where an incorrect entrance could matter, such as a hospital campus, shopping complex, or multi-building business park.

Understand why a correct pin can produce an unexpected route

When the destination is correct, Waze chooses among connected road segments using its map connections, speed and traffic information, and your fastest-or-shortest preference. A route that looks indirect may reflect current traffic, a one-way connection, a turn restriction, or a different optimization goal rather than a GPS failure.

  1. Before driving, compare the route alternatives shown by Waze.
  2. Open route preferences and verify whether you selected the fastest or shortest option, along with any toll, highway, ferry, or unpaved-road avoidance settings available on your device.
  3. Inspect the map around the odd turn. A missing connection, incorrect restriction, or closed road can make the chosen path appear unreasonable.
  4. If the same map or routing error persists when conditions are normal, submit a map or routing report through Waze rather than assuming the app will learn your preferred path simply because you repeatedly drive another road.

Traffic and speed data can change throughout the day, so a route that differs from yesterday’s route is not automatically incorrect. The useful distinction is whether the destination pin is misplaced, the route preferences exclude a road, or the underlying map connection is wrong.

4. Waze gives no spoken directions or sound

Waze can display a route correctly while its audio is muted. Check the app’s sound mode and guidance volume separately from the phone’s general media volume.

  • Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks

Check sound mode and guidance volume

  1. In Waze, open the sound control and verify that it is set to sound on, not alerts-only or off.
  2. Raise the guidance volume while a route is active or from Waze’s sound settings.
  3. If you are using a car display, check whether the setting must be changed on the phone or in the in-car Waze interface. The available controls depend on Android Auto, CarPlay, and the vehicle system.
  4. Confirm that the car stereo is on the correct audio source and that another audio app can play through the same connection.

Microphone access is unrelated to playback. Waze may request a microphone for voice search or voice reports, but granting microphone permission will not unmute spoken turn-by-turn directions.

Reset a damaged voice cache

If sound mode and volume are correct but voices remain silent, Waze’s published troubleshooting sequence for iOS includes clearing the voice cache. Android’s published steps also include this command:

  1. Open Waze’s search field.
  2. Enter ##@cctts.
  3. Run the command, then return to the voice-selection setting.
  4. Select the desired voice again and test a route while parked.

Waze can change interface details over time, so confirm the current on-screen instructions in the app before using the command. If the voice list does not reload or audio still fails, close and reopen Waze, test the phone speaker without the car connection, and then test the car audio separately. This isolates a voice-data problem from a Bluetooth, USB, or vehicle-audio problem.

5. Waze fails only on Android Auto or CarPlay

The fastest isolation test is to disconnect the phone from the car system and run Waze directly on the phone while parked. This tells you whether the fault follows Waze and the phone or appears only when the vehicle integration is involved.

Android Auto

  1. Disconnect the phone from Android Auto and open Waze on the phone.
  2. Check whether the phone obtains a location and an internet connection and whether Waze can calculate a route.
  3. If Waze also fails on the phone, follow the phone GPS and network procedures above. Waze Help states that “Waze on Android Auto depends on your phone’s GPS and internet connection.”
  4. If Waze works normally on the phone but the car display shows a GPS error, reconnect after stopping the app, then escalate the issue through Waze support. The remaining fault may be Android Auto, the vehicle head unit, the cable, or the integration itself.

CarPlay

  1. Disconnect CarPlay and test Waze on the phone.
  2. If the phone app cannot locate you or calculate a route, use the phone-side GPS and network checks rather than changing CarPlay settings.
  3. If the phone app works but the dashboard does not, restart the phone and vehicle connection while parked and verify the current CarPlay connection requirements.
  4. For a persistent display-only failure, distinguish a factory-installed head unit from a separately installed CarPlay system when contacting support; the responsible manufacturer and troubleshooting path can differ.

Do not troubleshoot a cable, head unit, or dashboard screen while driving. If the phone works and the car display does not, report the exact symptom, phone model, operating-system version, vehicle system, and connection type to the appropriate support team.

Prevent repeat failures

  • Enable phone location before starting a trip and keep Waze’s location permission intact after operating-system updates.
  • Start route calculation where the phone has a reliable data signal, especially after leaving Wi-Fi.
  • Keep the phone in a secure position with as clear a view of the sky as practical; avoid enclosing it inside a shielded console compartment.
  • Check the destination pin and route preferences before moving, particularly for unfamiliar campuses and locations with multiple entrances.
  • Test audio on the phone and through the car system while parked before relying on spoken directions.
  • When a problem appears only on the dashboard, disconnect the integration first. That single test prevents you from changing phone GPS settings when the actual fault is in the vehicle connection.
