Yes, but only selectively. A PS5 can play certain original PS2 classics through PlayStation Plus Premium in supported markets. If the exact game is not in your local catalog, look for an official PS4 or PS5 remaster or remake, or use an original PS2 console. Sony’s current documentation covers catalog streaming and modern re-releases; it does not establish that a PS5 can read original PS2 discs directly.
The practical order is simple: check the title and region first, identify whether the listing offers streaming or downloading, then choose a remaster or original hardware if the catalog does not meet your needs.

What “playing PS2 games on PS5” actually means
There are three different ways people describe playing a PS2 game today, and they should not be treated as interchangeable:
- An original PS2 classic in PlayStation Plus: Sony includes selected original PS2 games among the Classics Catalog titles available through PlayStation Plus Premium in select markets. Availability depends on the specific title, membership plan and country, and can change.
- An official remaster or remake: A publisher may release a PS2-era game as a separate PS4 or PS5 product. You download that modern release from its PlayStation Store listing; it is not the original PS2 disc running in the PS5.
- Original PS2 hardware: You use a PS2 console and a compatible game copy. This is the fallback when a title is absent from current PS5 services or when preserving the original experience matters more than convenience.
Sony’s 2022 PlayStation Plus guide describes original PS2 games being available to stream through Premium in select markets and distinguishes them from PS2 remasters and remakes downloadable on PS4 and PS5. That explanation remains useful, but the live catalog is the authority for what you can access now.

Route 1: Play a selected PS2 classic through PlayStation Plus Premium
PlayStation Plus Premium is the only official PS5 route in the supplied Sony material that specifically covers original PS2 games. It is a subscription service, not a complete PS2 library. A Premium membership does not make every PS2 release available, and a title listed in one country may be absent in another.
Check the exact game before subscribing
Use Sony’s PlayStation Plus games catalog and search for the exact title while signed in to the account and region you will use. Check the product card carefully:
- Confirm that the listing is available in your country.
- Confirm that the listing is included with the Premium benefit rather than requiring a separate purchase.
- Look for whether the title offers Download, Stream or both.
- Read the edition and platform details so you do not confuse an original-style classic with a separately sold remaster or remake.
Sony says catalog availability varies by title, plan and market and may change over time. Do not rely on an old list of “all PS2 games on PS5”; verify the individual listing immediately before you commit to a subscription.

Open the catalog on your PS5
Sony’s support instructions provide this path on the console:

- From the PS5 Games home screen, select PlayStation Plus.
- Open Benefits.
- Select Game Catalog.
- Choose the eligible game you want.
- Select Download or Stream when that option is shown for the title.
The same procedure is documented in Sony’s PlayStation Plus game catalog support guide. If a title cannot be found, or the page shows a purchase price instead of a Premium entitlement, it is not available to you through that catalog at that moment.
Understand the streaming requirements
Streaming runs the game on Sony’s service and sends the video and audio to your PS5, so your network connection affects the experience. Sony’s support guide specifies at least 5 Mbps broadband for PlayStation Plus game streaming. Sony’s US catalog page lists 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those figures are service guidance, not a guarantee that every PS2 title is streamable in every territory.
A wired Ethernet connection or a strong, uncrowded Wi-Fi network generally gives streaming a better chance of staying responsive than a congested connection. If the title offers a download option, downloading avoids the continuous bandwidth requirement during play, although you still need the required membership and an eligible listing.

Premium is a recurring subscription, and Sony’s prices and plan terms are territory-specific and subject to change. Check the plan page for your country instead of relying on a price quoted elsewhere. The bigger issue for a PS2 fan is catalog continuity: a title can be removed or become unavailable in a market even though the service itself continues.

Route 2: Buy an official PS4 or PS5 remaster or remake
Many PS2-era games have been reissued for newer consoles, but a remaster or remake is a distinct release. It may use higher-resolution assets, revised controls, altered difficulty, new voice work, different licensing, or substantial changes to levels and story presentation. It may also omit features from the original.
Find the correct modern release
- Search the game’s exact name in the PlayStation Store on your PS5 or on the official PlayStation website for your region.
- Check the product page for PS4, PS5 or cross-generation compatibility.
- Read the description and edition name to determine whether it is a remaster, remake, collection or a direct classic release.
- Check screenshots, included titles and save-data notes before buying a collection that contains several games.
Sony’s PS Plus guide states that PS2 remasters and remakes can be downloaded on PS4 and PS5. That does not mean every PS2 game received one, nor does it mean your original PS2 disc license transfers to the modern version. Treat the Store listing as a separate product with its own availability and purchase terms.
When a remaster is the better choice
- You want a local download instead of depending on streaming latency.
- You need modern display output, accessibility options or a controller layout designed for current hardware.
- The original game is not in your local Classics Catalog.
- You are comfortable with changes that distinguish the new release from the PS2 version.
If preserving the exact original presentation is important, compare the Store description with documentation or footage of the PS2 edition before deciding. Do not assume that a similarly titled product is a frame-for-frame replacement.
Route 3: Use an original PS2 console
An original PS2 remains the straightforward physical option for a game that is unavailable on PS5 services or has never received a modern release. You will need the console, a compatible game copy, a controller and a way to connect the console to your display.

Used-console checklist
- Console condition: Ask whether the system powers on, reads discs and keeps a stable picture. Disc drives, laser assemblies and ports can be worn on older units.
- Game condition: Inspect the disc for deep scratches and verify that it is the correct release for the console’s region.
- Region compatibility: A game from another regional format may not work on an unmodified console. Confirm the console and disc region before purchasing.
- Included hardware: Check that the listing includes a compatible controller, power cable and the video cable or adapter you need.
- Display connection: Modern televisions may not have the same inputs as older sets. Confirm how the PS2’s video output will connect to your screen and whether the required adapter is included.
Sony’s PlayStation history page identifies the PS2 as part of the PlayStation platform history; it is not a buying guide or a guarantee about the condition of any used listing. Treat second-hand hardware as a condition-and-compatibility purchase, not as a plug-and-play service equivalent to a PS5 download.

A decision process that avoids wasted money
- Write down the exact title and edition. Sequels, collections and similarly named remakes can appear as separate products.
- Check the local Premium catalog. Search while signed in to the account and region that will actually be used.
- Inspect the access method. If the card offers Stream, confirm your broadband meets Sony’s guidance; if it offers Download, check free storage and the required membership.
- Search the PlayStation Store for a modern release. Verify whether the result is a remaster, remake or collection rather than the original-style classic you wanted.
- Move to original hardware only when needed. Compare the cost and condition of a used PS2, game disc, controller, cables and display adapter against the value of owning that particular game.
Common problems and fixes
The game does not appear in Game Catalog
Confirm that you are viewing the catalog for the correct account region and that your membership is Premium. Search the title in the live catalog rather than relying on a screenshot or an old article. Availability can change by market and over time.
Only a purchase listing appears
A purchase page does not prove that the title is included with Premium. Check the membership label and the available buttons. The game may be sold separately, may be a different remaster or remake, or may not be part of the catalog in your market.

Measure the connection used by the PS5 and compare it with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and the 15 Mbps figure Sony lists for 1080p streaming in the US catalog guidance. Reduce competing traffic, use Ethernet where practical and restart the network equipment. If the title offers Download, use that option to remove the continuous streaming dependency.

The Store result is not the same game
Read the edition name and description. A remake can change mechanics, visuals and content; a remaster can alter resolution, controls or presentation. If the original version is essential, return to the Premium listing or consider original PS2 hardware.
A used PS2 picture does not appear on a modern television
Check that the console is set to the correct input, the video cable is fully seated and the adapter supports the PS2’s output. Verify the television’s available inputs before buying replacement hardware. A console that powers on but has no compatible display path is not yet a usable setup.
What a non-jailbroken PS5 cannot be assumed to do
Do not assume that inserting an original PS2 disc into a PS5 will launch the game. The Sony material for this topic documents selected Classics Catalog streaming and downloadable PS4/PS5 remasters or remakes; it does not establish direct original-PS2-disc support on PS5.
Do not assume that PlayStation Plus includes every PS2 release, that a title available in one country is available in yours, or that a subscription listing will remain permanently. Check the exact game, local catalog and access method each time you make the decision.
Bottom line
For a PS5 owner who will not jailbreak the console, start with the exact title in the local PlayStation Plus Premium Classics Catalog. Use Download or Stream only when the listing offers it and your connection meets Sony’s guidance. If the game is absent, choose an official PS4/PS5 remaster or remake when you accept a distinct modern version; otherwise, an original PS2 with a compatible disc remains the dependable physical alternative.
