South East Water’s Sussex guidance distinguishes household hosepipe restrictions from a separate, possible Non-Essential Use Ban (NEUB) for businesses and other non-household customers. The two measures have different scopes, and the business ban described by the utility would require government approval.
What the official information confirms—and what it does not
South East Water’s FAQ describes household restrictions in Sussex as tightened from 17 October 2025, after most exemptions were removed on 10 October 2025. It presents a further business restriction as a possible next step if conditions worsen—not as a confirmed ban currently in force. The FAQ does not verify the headline’s “in days” deadline, identify its source, or establish a household count.
The guidance is specific to Sussex, or the relevant part of Sussex where South East Water is the wholesale supplier. It cannot establish the rules for other parts of the UK. Check the current notice from the water company responsible for the property before acting.
How a household hosepipe ban differs from a business ban
| Measure | Who it targets | What it covers | Status described by South East Water |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary Use Ban (TUB), commonly called a hosepipe ban | Domestic customers | Hosepipe use, subject to the restrictions and exemptions in force | Household restrictions in Sussex were tightened from 17 October 2025, according to the FAQ. |
| Non-Essential Use Ban (NEUB) | Non-household and business customers | Specified non-essential uses of mains water | Described as a possible further measure if conditions worsen. It requires a Drought Order and approval by the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. |
South East Water describes a NEUB as a restriction it can apply for under a Drought Order when there is a threat of serious water shortages. That is a broader and separate measure from a household TUB; one does not automatically mean the other has been imposed.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which business activities could be restricted?
The utility says a NEUB may apply to specified uses of mains water, including:
- Watering plants outdoors on commercial premises.
- Filling or maintaining non-domestic swimming pools, paddling pools, hot tubs or ponds.
- Mechanical washing of vehicles.
- Cleaning vehicles, boats, aircraft, railway rolling stock, non-domestic premises, windows or industrial plant.
- Dust suppression.
- Using cisterns in unoccupied buildings.
These are potential restrictions in South East Water’s description, not proof that every activity is prohibited under a current order. The terms of an active order, including any health-and-safety exclusions or concessions, determine what a business may do. The utility says concessions depend on the severity of the drought.

Water sources and methods the utility says may be allowed
South East Water says its described NEUB does not affect private supplies such as boreholes or reservoirs, or harvested rainwater. It also identifies water-efficient drip or trickle irrigation as permitted. These details are specific to the supplier’s guidance and the applicable order; they should not be treated as a blanket exemption for every location or use. The FAQ says mains water cannot be used to top up a borehole or reservoir.
The utility names Water Direct as one service through which businesses may buy borehole or untreated water. Whether an alternative source is suitable or permitted depends on the activity and the rules in force.

What households and businesses should check
- Confirm your water supplier and supply area. The cited guidance concerns South East Water’s relevant Sussex wholesale area, not every UK water customer.
- Check whether a restriction is proposed, approved or active. A possible NEUB is not the same as an implemented Drought Order.
- Read the exact rules and exemptions. Household hosepipe restrictions and business-use restrictions apply to different customers and activities.
- Verify the source of any deadline or household figure. The official FAQ does not substantiate the headline’s “in days” wording or a number of households affected.
- For business use, check alternatives and conditions with the supplier. Private water, rainwater and efficient irrigation may be treated differently, but the active order controls.
