Install it on a firm, level stand with a filter, close-fitting lid and accessible tap; link more butts if demand exceeds one container. “Rain barrel” is the usual North American name for the same basic roof-runoff system.
Water butt and rain barrel mean almost the same thing
A water butt is the common UK term for a container that stores rainwater diverted from a roof gutter. Rain barrel is the term used more often in North America. Both describe the same basic idea: collect roof runoff, store it safely and use it later for garden watering.

The better choice is therefore not decided by the name. It depends on the roof area feeding the container, local rainfall, how much water the garden uses, available floor space, appearance, maintenance and whether the water will touch edible crops.

What to buy for a typical garden
Choose a covered container that can be connected to a reasonably clean, pitched roof downpipe. A 240-litre capacity is a practical reference point for many small and medium gardens because it provides useful reserve without requiring the footprint of a large tank.
- Container: a covered 240-litre water butt with a durable, UV-resistant body.
- Inlet protection: a filter or diverter that keeps leaves and coarse debris out.
- Safety: a close-fitting lid to reduce debris, algae and rain-borne disease spores.
- Base: a firm, level stand that raises the tap high enough for a watering can.
- Outlet: a tap that can be reached without moving the container, plus a suitable overflow route.
- Expansion: compatible connector fittings if you may add another butt later.
Inspect replacement-tap availability and the compatibility of connectors before buying. For a visible front garden, a decorative form may be worth choosing; for a narrow side passage, a slimline shape can make installation possible where a round container would not fit.
How much capacity do you need?
Size storage against three things: the roof catchment available, the rainfall pattern and the garden’s watering demand. A small roof may refill a large container slowly, while a large roof can overflow a small one during a wet spell. A garden with containers, a greenhouse or many beds may use stored water faster than a lawn-only garden.
| Capacity or arrangement | Where it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 100–160 litres | Very small gardens, balconies with suitable drainage, or locations with little floor space | Whether the reserve lasts between rain events and whether the tap can be used comfortably |
| 240 litres | Practical baseline for many small and medium gardens | A level stand, filtered inlet, lid and enough clearance to operate the tap |
| Several linked butts | Larger roofs or gardens that outgrow one container | Connector compatibility, a stable base for each unit and a safe overflow path |
| Large tank or cistern | Multiple downpipes, substantial gardens or wider non-potable property use | Engineered sizing, installation, maintenance and drainage objectives |
Linking containers is often more practical than replacing one medium-sized butt with a single very large unit. It spreads the load between stable bases and lets you add capacity as the garden develops. Check that the connector kit is intended for the container design and that all units remain accessible for cleaning.
Round containers generally provide more volume for their floor area. Slimline models sacrifice some of that efficiency to fit narrow passages. Decorative models can be useful where the container is prominent, but appearance should not take priority over a secure lid, reliable tap and serviceable fittings.
What roof runoff can provide
Available water varies with roof size, rainfall and the proportion of runoff that reaches the diverter. The Royal Horticultural Society gives a useful illustration: a small shed roof in dry south-east England can yield about 2,500–3,500 litres of rainwater per year. The same guidance notes that this is equivalent to roughly 10–15 standard 240-litre water butts over a year, not a promise that one butt will remain full.

Defra reported a different example in 2011: a 7 ft × 5 ft shed collected 636 litres during an average English and Welsh summer. That figure used 195.8 mm of average summer rainfall for England and Wales over 1971–2000. It demonstrates why a container can empty during a dry period even when annual rainfall appears generous.

Installation: a dependable setup in seven steps
- Select the catchment. Choose a roof downpipe serving a reasonably clean, pitched roof. Avoid directing heavily contaminated runoff into the container.
- Fit a diverter or filter. Use a connector that diverts water from the downpipe while screening leaves and coarse debris. Follow the fitting instructions so the downpipe still has a route for excess water.
- Prepare the base. Put the butt on a firm, level stand or stable masonry base. A raised position lets a watering can sit beneath the tap; an unstable base can tilt or fail as the container fills.
- Connect the inlet. Keep the hose or connector run short, supported and free of kinks. Confirm that the inlet seals without forcing the container out of level.
- Secure the lid. Fit the close-fitting cover before the first collection. The lid limits debris, algae growth and exposure to rain-borne disease spores, and helps prevent access by children and animals.
- Check dispensing and overflow. Open and close the tap while the container is empty, then verify that the overflow cannot undermine the base or flood a wall. Leave enough room to remove the lid for cleaning.
- Test after rain. Inspect the diverter, joints, stand and overflow after the first significant rainfall. Correct leaks or movement before the container reaches full weight.
A pump is needed when you want useful hose pressure from stored water. Gravity from a raised butt is normally adequate for a watering can, but not for a long hose or a fine spray attachment.
Features that matter more than the label
Lid and contamination control
A close-fitting lid is essential rather than decorative. It keeps leaves and insects out, limits light that encourages algae and reduces exposure to airborne contamination. Keep the gutter and filter clear so the lid is not asked to do all the work.
Tap height and access
Check the position of the tap against the watering cans you actually use. A stand can make the difference between filling a can comfortably and having to lift it from ground level. Leave working space around the outlet so it can be replaced if it begins to leak.

Footprint and appearance
Measure the width, depth and height available, including clearance for the lid and connector. Slimline units suit side passages; round units usually store more water per unit of floor area; decorative units can be less visually intrusive in a front garden.

Durability and parts
Look for UV-resistant construction, a robust tap and replacement parts that can be obtained separately. No independent head-to-head trial establishes that one material, brand or shape universally saves more water. Compare capacity, siting, lid and filter design, durability and expandability instead.
Using collected water on plants
Rainwater is generally soft and is well suited to garden watering. The RHS describes rainwater as “the best option for garden watering.” Stored water is particularly useful where mains water is hard or where a gardener wants to reduce treated-water use.
Established plants
Use water from a maintained, covered butt on established ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and many mature vegetables. Apply it to the soil rather than creating a cloud of spray.

The RHS advises avoiding stored butt water on seedlings because damping-off diseases may be present. Use a clean, reliable water source for germinating seeds and vulnerable young plants until they are established.
Edible crops
Roof surfaces can add organic debris, bacteria, bird or animal waste and chemicals from roofing materials. EPA guidance warns that this runoff may contaminate collected water. If water will touch vegetables, fruit or herbs, keep the catchment clean, prevent debris entering the butt and follow local public-health or water-authority advice. Do not present collected roof water as drinking water.
Spraying and hoses
For hoses, use a coarse spray rather than a fine aerosol, and disconnect and drain the hose when it is not in use. Avoiding fine droplets reduces the chance of inhaling contaminated water.

Maintenance that keeps the water usable
- Inspect regularly: remove leaves from the gutter, inlet filter and lid before they decompose.
- Use the stored water: regular turnover reduces stagnant conditions and creates room for the next rainfall.
- Clean annually: empty the container, rinse it and wash the inside with warm water and a small amount of washing-up liquid.
- Deal with smells correctly: if the water smells, empty and clean the butt rather than adding chemicals to the stored water.
- Check fittings: examine the tap, connector, stand and overflow for leaks, cracks or movement, especially after freezing weather.
- Keep the cover fitted: replace a damaged lid promptly so debris and light do not enter.
Do not improvise a chemical treatment for an odour. Cleaning the container and clearing the catchment addresses the underlying source without introducing substances that could harm plants or soil.

Legal and regional considerations
United Kingdom
The RHS says collecting roof rainwater for garden use is legal and encouraged in the UK. Local drought restrictions, hosepipe bans and council subsidy schemes can change by location and date, so check current notices from your water company or council before relying on stored water during restrictions.
United States
Rules differ by state. EPA guidance notes that some states may restrict rainwater collection, so US readers should check their state water-resource agency before installing a system or expanding it beyond ordinary garden use.
Drainage and planning objectives
A garden butt is not automatically evidence of compliant sustainable drainage. GOV.UK’s SuDS standard says ordinary butts limited to garden use in dry periods do not guarantee that storage will be available when compliance depends on it. Projects intended to manage stormwater or serve a whole property need calculations and a system designed to appropriate BS EN 16941 principles.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a tank or cistern is the better solution
Move beyond standalone butts when the requirement is larger than occasional garden watering. Relevant signs include several roof downpipes, a large greenhouse or growing area, a need to supply multiple non-potable outlets, or a project with formal drainage targets.
- Linked above-ground butts: a practical intermediate step when you need more garden reserve but can still manage visible containers.
- Engineered tank: appropriate when storage volume, pump controls, filtration and overflow behaviour must be designed together.
- Whole-property harvesting: requires professional assessment of demand, catchment, pipework, maintenance and back-up supply.
Do not assume that simply joining more domestic butts delivers the performance or compliance of a designed cistern. The larger system should be sized for its actual purpose and maintained as a system, not treated as an oversized garden accessory.

Troubleshooting common problems
The butt stays empty
Check that the selected downpipe serves the roof you intended, that the diverter is aligned and that the filter is not blocked. A small catchment or a dry spell may simply be providing less inflow than the garden uses.
The container overflows
Confirm that the overflow is connected or directed safely and that the inlet is not feeding faster than the outlet route can handle. If the roof supplies more water than one container can store, add a compatible linked unit or increase capacity.
Water smells or becomes heavily contaminated
Empty and clean the container, clear the gutter and filter, and refit the lid. Do not add chemicals to mask the smell. Review whether the catchment includes a dirty roof surface or a source of animal waste.
The tap is too low for a watering can
Raise the container on a purpose-built, stable stand rather than balancing it on loose objects. Recheck that the full container remains level and supported.
A hose produces little pressure
Gravity-fed outlets are intended mainly for filling cans. Use a pump for useful hose pressure, and keep the hose drained and disconnected when stored.
A purchase checklist
- Does the capacity match the roof catchment and watering demand?
- Will the footprint fit while leaving access to the lid, tap and overflow?
- Is the lid close-fitting and the inlet filtered?
- Is a firm, level stand included or available for that model?
- Can you obtain replacement taps, seals and connector parts?
- Will the container accept a compatible diverter or connector kit?
- Is the water intended only for established plants, or will edible crops require additional precautions?
- Are local drought, collection or drainage rules relevant to the installation?
Bottom line
For an ordinary small or medium UK garden, start with a covered 240-litre water butt on a firm stand, fed through a filtered diverter from a clean roof downpipe. Choose a slimline or decorative form when space or appearance demands it, link additional units when demand grows, and move to an engineered tank only when storage, whole-property use or stormwater objectives justify the extra design.
