You can watch some Dutch TV abroad, but access depends on the service, your location and the programme or event. NPO Start has no single worldwide catalogue; NPO Plus is for Netherlands residents travelling temporarily within the European Economic Area (EEA); and KIJK says much of its content is unavailable outside the Netherlands. For selected Dutch-language programming, BVN is an international option, not a full replacement.
Can you watch Dutch TV abroad?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer for all Dutch channels and programmes. Broadcast rights are often licensed by territory, so a stream may work in one country but be blocked in another. Availability can also differ between live TV, catch-up programmes and a specific sports or other live event.

What works with NPO Start and NPO Plus?
NPO Start: availability varies by programme
NPO Start offers live NPO channels and on-demand programmes, but NPO says access abroad depends on the rights for each title. Some content may play outside the Netherlands while other streams are restricted. Check the individual programme page rather than assuming the full catalogue travels with you. NPO’s help page explains its availability rules.

NPO Plus: Netherlands residents travelling in the EEA
NPO says NPO Plus is available only to people resident in the Netherlands. An eligible subscriber can use it temporarily while travelling in the EEA, which includes EU countries as well as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. NPO says Plus cannot be used outside the EEA. Living abroad is not the same as temporarily travelling with an eligible Dutch subscription. NPO’s help page lists the price as €3.49 per month; check the current listing before subscribing because prices can change. See NPO’s current help information.
Live events may have different restrictions
Do not assume that the NPO Plus travel allowance guarantees access to every live sports event or major broadcast. NPO notes that rights for particular events can restrict streams to the Netherlands. Verify the event’s own page and test the official stream before it begins. NPO’s guidance covers these event-specific limits.

If NPO thinks you are abroad while you are in the Netherlands
NPO says an IP address can be classified as belonging to another country, including after changing internet providers. If you are physically in the Netherlands but see a foreign-location error, ask your internet provider to check the country code associated with your IP address. NPO does not support VPN or proxy use and says it cannot guarantee how its player will work with them. Read NPO’s troubleshooting guidance.

KIJK carries programmes from SBS6, NET5, Veronica and SBS9. Its ordinary programming is free and ad-supported, and its FAQ says an account is not required for regular viewing. KIJK also says a large part of its content is unavailable abroad because it lacks international rights. Check KIJK’s FAQ for its current access guidance.

Special streams and sports events can have different territorial terms. KIJK’s help information includes cases where viewers abroad are directed to an event organizer’s international distribution, while an individual event page may list a different set of permitted countries. Use the exact event page for its territory, ticket and account requirements; one event’s availability does not mean KIJK generally works abroad. KIJK’s FAQ and its event listings are the places to verify those details.

BVN is an official option for selected Dutch-language programming outside the Netherlands. NPO describes its schedule as a curated mix of news, information, entertainment, sport and children’s programmes. Its livestream is available through the BVN website and app worldwide, and satellite reception is possible in many regions. BVN does not reproduce the complete NPO Start or KIJK catalogue, so check its schedule to see whether it carries the programmes you want. NPO’s help page describes BVN’s international offering.
Choose the right option for your situation
| Option | Who may be able to watch abroad | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| NPO Start | Depends on the programme’s rights and the viewer’s location. | Whether the individual live channel or on-demand programme is available from your country. |
| NPO Plus | An eligible Netherlands resident travelling temporarily in the EEA; NPO says it cannot be used outside the EEA. | Residency eligibility, travel location and any separate restrictions on a live event. |
| KIJK | Much of the catalogue is restricted abroad; an individual event may have different terms. | The programme or event page, including territory, ticket and account requirements. |
| BVN | Viewers outside the Netherlands seeking selected Dutch-language programmes. | Its current schedule, or satellite availability in your region. |
Does a TV device or VPN change access?
A supported phone, television or casting setup can change how you play a stream, but it does not change the programme’s territorial rights. NPO documents casting support; that does not make a restricted programme available in another country. NPO also says it does not support VPN or proxy use and cannot guarantee player operation with them. Use the official service and check its location and programme rules instead of relying on a device or network setting to bypass a block. NPO’s help page covers both playback and location restrictions.
