Waste plastic can be chemically converted into a porous “molecular sponge” that pulls water vapour from air. In a 2026 University of Vienna demonstration, modified polystyrene, polycarbonate, ABS and a mixed waste-plastic feedstock absorbed almost 60% of their own weight in humid conditions and about 20% in dry, desert-like air. Mild heat—including sunlight—then released most of the captured water in roughly an hour.
What the University of Vienna material does
The team led by Anastasiia Naryshkina, Paul Schweng and Robert Woodward transformed aromatic waste plastics into porous polymer networks. The demonstrated inputs were general-purpose polystyrene packaging, polycarbonate recovered from old CDs, ABS such as that used in LEGO bricks, and a selected mixture of waste plastics.

The process uses sulfuric acid to add sulfonic-acid groups to the plastic network. Those groups attract water molecules, while aromatic rings in the original polymers provide the chemistry needed to connect the chains into a high-surface-area, porous structure. The result is a solid adsorbent: it holds moisture on internal surfaces rather than turning the plastic into a liquid or dissolving it.
How the plastic sponge captures and releases moisture
1. Adsorption from air
When the porous material is exposed to humid air, its hydrophilic sulfonic-acid sites bind water vapour inside the pores. In the University of Vienna tests, uptake approached 60% of the material’s own mass under humid conditions. In dry, desert-like conditions, the sponge still captured about 20% of its mass.

2. Regeneration with mild heat
Heating weakens the water-surface interactions and drives the moisture back out as liquid or vapour that can be collected. Most adsorption and desorption occurred within about one hour when the material was regenerated with mild heat such as sunlight. That low-temperature regeneration is important for off-grid use because it could reduce the need for powered heaters.
3. Repeated cycling
The release reports that the sponges withstand repeated capture-and-release cycles well. However, detailed long-term durability measurements and the full resource requirements of manufacture and operation are still being assessed.

These percentages are material-level laboratory results, not a guaranteed daily water yield for a complete machine. A practical device would also depend on airflow, humidity, temperature, bed thickness, collection efficiency and the energy used to move and heat air.
Can it produce drinking water?
Not yet as a certified appliance. The study establishes a route to capture atmospheric moisture, but the reported work does not certify the collected water for drinking, demonstrate a packaged consumer system or prove commercial deployment. Any real installation would need testing for residual sulfuric-acid-derived chemicals, plastic additives, trace contaminants, microbial growth and the quality of the condensate after repeated cycles. Filtration, disinfection and materials containment would be essential before potable use could be claimed.

The technology is better described today as a promising adsorbent platform for supplementary or off-grid water harvesting. It could potentially operate where grid electricity is limited, provided the full system can supply clean air, collect the released moisture and meet water-quality regulations.
Why using waste plastic is significant
Atmospheric-water harvesting normally requires a sorbent that attracts water at a chosen humidity and can release it without excessive energy. Converting discarded aromatic plastics into that sorbent addresses two problems at once: persistent plastic waste and limited access to water. The ability to process several feedstocks, including a selected mixed-plastic stream, could make sorting less restrictive than approaches that require one highly purified polymer.

That advantage must be balanced against the chemical inputs. Sulfuric-acid treatment, washing, neutralisation, worker protection and waste handling all contribute to the material’s environmental footprint. A complete life-cycle assessment has not yet been reported in the release, so the recycled feedstock alone does not prove that the system uses fewer resources than alternative sorbents.

A separate 2025 peer-reviewed study made porous sponges from recycled PET for oil-water separation. Those sponges absorbed up to 22 grams of oil per gram of sponge, separated oil-water emulsions at more than 97% efficiency and reached about 726.7 litres per square metre per hour by gravity. Those figures describe liquid-oil cleanup, not water-vapour capture, and cannot be used as atmospheric-water performance figures.
For a meaningful comparison with other atmospheric-water technologies, the relevant measures are water uptake at a stated humidity, regeneration temperature and energy, cycle durability, feedstock and chemical requirements, water-treatment needs and life-cycle cost. The University of Vienna release does not provide enough data for a numerical head-to-head comparison with commercial atmospheric-water generators.
Is the technology ready to buy?
No current consumer product is identified as using this exact waste-plastic sponge. The reported work remains a laboratory demonstration, and no certification, licensing program or commercial deployment is established in the available announcement. Products marketed simply as atmospheric-water generators, generic desiccants or laboratory sponges should not be treated as equivalent to this material.
The next technical milestones are clear:
- Measure capacity and output across a wide humidity and temperature range.
- Quantify energy use for air movement, heating and water collection.
- Verify performance after many more cycles and determine when capacity declines.
- Test chemical leaching and establish a treatment train for potable water.
- Assess sulfuric-acid consumption, wastewater, manufacturing scale and total life-cycle impact.
- Build and independently certify a sealed prototype rather than relying on material-level uptake alone.
What readers should take away
The University of Vienna work shows that several common aromatic waste plastics can be redesigned into hydrophilic, porous adsorbents that capture meaningful amounts of water vapour—even in dry air—and regenerate with mild heat. It is a credible materials advance, but it is not evidence that a household can yet make safe drinking water from desert air with discarded plastic. Performance, cost, durability, environmental burden and water safety all still require system-level validation.
