Waste Connections vs. Republic Services: Which Waste Stock Fits Your Portfolio?

Neither Waste Connections (NYSE/TSX: WCN) nor Republic Services (NYSE: RSG) is an automatic portfolio winner. Both reported growth and adjusted EBITDA margins around 32% in Q2 2026, but they differ in operating mix, geographic footprint, reported pricing and volume measures, and capital-allocation details. Which waste stock fits your portfolio depends on which business exposures you want, your view of each company’s growth and risks, and—critically—current valuation and your own portfolio needs.

How Waste Connections and Republic Services differ as businesses

Both companies combine recurring waste collection with disposal and related services, but their disclosed portfolios are not identical. Their customer and location figures are issuer-reported, and the companies do not present them as directly harmonized measures.

Company Business and footprint disclosed by the issuer
Waste Connections (WCN) Its services include collection, transfer, disposal, recycling, renewable fuels, non-hazardous oilfield waste and Pacific Northwest intermodal services. Its FY2025 annual report says it served approximately 9 million residential, commercial and industrial customers across 46 U.S. states and six Canadian provinces.
Republic Services (RSG) Its investor profile describes recycling, solid, special and hazardous waste services, field and industrial services, emergency response, and equipment rental and cleaning. The profile reports 13 million customers and more than 1,000 North American locations.

For an investor, that distinction is more useful than treating either company as a pure-play collection business. WCN’s disclosed mix includes Canadian operations, oilfield waste and intermodal services; RSG’s includes hazardous and special waste and a broader set of field and industrial services.

What the latest Q2 2026 results show

The latest results covered here are for the quarter ended June 30, 2026—not Q3. Waste Connections released its results on July 22, 2026; Republic Services released its results on August 6, 2026. The following figures come from each issuer, and adjusted EBITDA is a non-GAAP measure that each company defines for itself.

Measure Waste Connections Republic Services
Q2 2026 revenue $2.562 billion, up 6.4% year over year. Total revenue growth of 4.6%; the cited Q2 release summary does not state the total revenue dollar amount here.
Q2 2026 adjusted EBITDA $840.1 million, up 6.8% year over year. $1.423 billion.
Q2 2026 adjusted EBITDA margin 32.8%. 32.1%.
Six-month result reported in the Q2 release Revenue of $4.932 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $1.610 billion for the six months ended June 30, 2026. Cash flow from operations of $2.38 billion and adjusted free cash flow of $1.58 billion for the six months ended June 30, 2026.

These figures suggest similar Q2 adjusted EBITDA margins, but they do not make the businesses interchangeable. RSG has the larger revenue and adjusted EBITDA totals in the figures above; those dollar totals reflect different company scales and business scopes, not a direct measure of which stock is more attractive. Compare each company’s growth, margins and cash generation within its own definitions rather than treating non-GAAP figures as standardized.

Pricing and volume: growth has more than one source

Pricing measures and volume trends help distinguish organic operating performance from growth driven by acquisitions or other factors. The reported scopes differ, so the percentages below should not be read as a like-for-like ranking.

Q2 2026 measure Waste Connections Republic Services
Price or yield For solid-waste collection, transfer and disposal, reported yield was 4.6%; reported core price was 5.6%. Reported 5.3% core price growth on total revenue and 3.4% revenue growth from average yield on total revenue.
Volume Unit volume for solid-waste collection, transfer and disposal declined 1.9%. Reported volume declined 1.6%; the release’s associated measures refer to total and related-business revenue.

WCN also cited lower commodity values as a factor in its results. That matters when interpreting reported growth: pricing, volume, acquisitions and commodity-related effects can move in different directions. RSG’s reported price and yield gains alongside lower volume likewise show why a single headline growth rate cannot explain the operating picture.

Rank #2

Cash generation and capital allocation

Both companies use cash for a combination of business investment and shareholder returns. The periods and categories below are as reported by the companies; they are not a measure of future returns to shareholders.

Disclosure Waste Connections Republic Services
First-half 2026 acquisitions Not stated in the cited Q2 figures. $860 million invested in acquisitions during the first half of 2026.
First-half 2026 share repurchases $614.5 million. $651 million.
First-half 2026 cash dividends $177.1 million. $385 million.
Total shareholder returns reported The cited Q2 figures report repurchases and cash dividends separately, not a combined total. $1.04 billion returned to shareholders in the first half of 2026, including the repurchases and dividends shown above.

WCN’s FY2025 annual report described year-end debt-to-EBITDA leverage of 2.75 times. Its Q2 2026 release instead reported debt to book capitalization of 54% at June 30, 2026. Those are different measures and should not be compared as if they were a single leverage ratio. RSG’s FY2025 Form 10-K reported senior-debt ratings of A- from S&P, A- from Fitch and A3 from Moody’s. Credit ratings are assessments, not guarantees against loss or changes in credit quality.

Dividend records are historical, not promises

WCN reported a quarterly dividend of $0.35 per share in Q2 2026. Its FY2025 annual report calculated a 13.9% compound annual growth rate in its regular quarterly per-share dividend through 15 consecutive double-digit annual increases since the dividend was initiated. That history does not establish a future growth rate.

RSG announced a quarterly dividend of $0.67 per share for October 2026, following a 4.5-cent increase. Its FY2025 Form 10-K reported a five-year dividend compound annual growth rate of 6.3% through FY2025 and 22 consecutive annual increases. This, too, is historical. The per-share amounts alone do not show which stock has the higher dividend yield: yield depends on share price, and the prices needed for a comparison are not established here.

What management expects for 2026

The ranges below are company guidance from the latest Q2 releases, not guaranteed outcomes. Revenue and adjusted EBITDA guidance are not valuation measures, and adjusted free cash flow is non-GAAP.

2026 outlook item Waste Connections, July 22 release Republic Services, August 6 release
Revenue $10.02–$10.05 billion. $17.20–$17.30 billion.
Adjusted EBITDA $3.33–$3.34 billion. $5.525–$5.550 billion.
Adjusted diluted EPS Not stated in the cited outlook. $7.23–$7.28.
Adjusted free cash flow $1.40–$1.45 billion. $2.540–$2.575 billion.

The size of an outlook range does not by itself tell an investor which company has better prospects. These forecasts depend on assumptions and can differ materially from actual results. WCN specifically noted rapidly rising fuel-related costs, lower commodity values and landfill closure/post-closure adjustments among the matters affecting its outlook, in addition to risks described in its securities filings. RSG said its 2026 guidance reflects current economic conditions and may be affected by changes.

A practical framework for deciding which stock fits

Operating results can help narrow the questions to investigate, but they cannot determine portfolio fit without valuation and personal context. Use the comparison as a checklist rather than as a buy signal.

  • Choose the business exposure you understand. Consider whether WCN’s disclosed oilfield-waste, intermodal and Canadian exposure is a better match for your thesis than RSG’s hazardous and special waste, environmental, field and industrial services.
  • Assess the quality of growth. Look at price or yield, volume, acquisition contributions and commodity effects together. Keep the companies’ differing definitions in mind when comparing reported percentages.
  • Examine cash conversion and investment needs. Adjusted EBITDA and adjusted free cash flow are non-GAAP; compare definitions and review operating cash flow and capital spending in the filings before drawing conclusions from a single headline measure.
  • Evaluate capital allocation against your priorities. Acquisitions, dividends and buybacks serve different purposes. Repurchases do not guarantee share-price appreciation, and the amounts spent in one period do not establish what management will do next.
  • Put leverage and credit evidence in context. Use dated, consistently defined measures where available. Do not treat WCN’s debt-to-EBITDA figure and debt-to-book-capitalization percentage as interchangeable, or interpret RSG’s ratings as eliminating risk.
  • Check valuation and portfolio exposure. Current share prices, valuation multiples, forward market expectations, tax circumstances and your existing holdings are essential to an investment decision, but are not established by the operating disclosures summarized here. Avoid calling either stock cheap, overvalued, safer or a buy based on these results alone.

Risks that operating metrics cannot settle

Both businesses face risks that can affect results, cash needs and investor returns. The cited disclosures do not provide a matched estimate of the likelihood or relative size of each risk, so these points do not establish which company is riskier overall.

  • Economic conditions and changes in demand can affect volumes and the assumptions behind company guidance.
  • Fuel-cost increases and commodity-value changes can affect WCN’s costs and results; WCN also identified landfill closure and post-closure adjustments.
  • Acquisition activity can change business mix and growth, while requiring capital and integration effort. RSG reported substantial acquisition investment in the first half of 2026.
  • Environmental-services operations and capital structure are matters for investors to examine in RSG’s FY2025 Form 10-K. Both companies also identify risks in their securities filings.

On July 22, 2026, WCN CEO Ronald J. Mittelstaedt described the company’s outperformance as reflecting its strategy and culture. On August 6, 2026, RSG CEO Jon Vander Ark said its results reflected the strength and resilience of its business model. These are management characterizations, not independent assessments of future performance.

So, which waste stock fits your portfolio?

WCN may warrant closer study if its particular mix of U.S. and Canadian operations, oilfield waste and intermodal services fits your investment thesis. RSG may warrant closer study if its disclosed mix of recycling, hazardous and special waste, environmental solutions and field services better matches what you want to own. Their Q2 margins were close, but the operating measures, scales and business mixes are not identical.

No defensible valuation-based winner follows from the operating figures alone. Before deciding, compare current prices and valuation with your return expectations, portfolio concentration, income needs and tolerance for business and market risk. Revisit guidance and dividend information at the time you make the decision because both can change.
