Resume Now’s analysis of U.S. Census Bureau Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS) data puts Washington, D.C. first among the included jurisdictions for reported business AI use in the first half of 2026, at 27.7%. Arizona leads the states at 24.4%, followed by Colorado at 24.0%. These are averages of survey-reported shares, not counts of businesses using AI, and the ranking is Resume Now’s analysis—not an official Census Bureau league table.
Which states report the most business AI use?
Among states in Resume Now’s first-half 2026 analysis, Arizona ranks first, followed by Colorado. Washington State is fourth overall when the District of Columbia is included.
| Place in the reported ranking | State or jurisdiction | Average share of businesses reporting AI use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Washington, D.C. | 27.7% |
| 2 | Arizona | 24.4% |
| 3 | Colorado | 24.0% |
| 4 | Washington State | 23.1% |
| Lowest reported among included states | West Virginia | 13.5% |
Figures and ordering are from Resume Now’s AI Adoption by State: Which State Uses AI the Most at Work? analysis; the fourth-place position for Washington State is also reported in CPA Practice Advisor’s October 1, 2026 republication. The 0.4-percentage-point difference between Arizona and Colorado is small, and the published analysis does not provide state-level sample sizes, margins of error, or statistical tests. The reported order is clear; the available figures do not establish that Arizona’s lead over Colorado is statistically meaningful.
What the percentages measure
Resume Now averaged usable state-level BTOS values for the first half of 2026 and omitted suppressed values. Its reported percentage is the share of businesses reporting AI use, not the total number of AI-using businesses in a state or jurisdiction. A populous state can therefore have a larger number of businesses using AI while showing a lower reported share.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The underlying BTOS concept is business-reported AI use in producing goods or services. A 2024 U.S. Census Bureau methods paper defines “Current AI Use” as a business answering yes to using AI in producing goods or services during the two weeks before data collection. That definition explains the survey measure; the paper’s state panels cover late 2023 to February 2024 and do not support the 2026 ranking. See the Census Bureau paper, Tracking Firm Use of AI in Real Time.
How to interpret the ranking and its categories
It is an analysis of Census survey data
The state comparisons are Resume Now’s calculations using BTOS data, not a state ranking published by the Census Bureau. The Census Bureau provides the survey data; Resume Now describes its averaging and exclusions in its methodology. The Census Bureau’s BTOS Data Downloads portal is the official source for the survey data.

Close differences need uncertainty estimates
The published ranking does not include state-level sample sizes, margins of error, or tests of statistical significance. Treat the values as the reported estimates and avoid interpreting a narrow gap—such as Arizona’s 0.4-point difference over Colorado—as proof of a reliable underlying difference.
“Fever,” “temperate,” and “chill” are report labels
Resume Now calculated an 18.9% baseline from the included locations and uses it for its AI Thermometer categories. “Fever Zones” are at least two percentage points above that baseline; “Temperate Zones” are within two points above or below it; and “Chill Zones” are at least two points below. The report places 13 locations in fever zones, 21 in temperate zones, and 15 in chill zones. These labels are the report’s editorial categories, not Census classifications.
