Are washing machine cleaner tablets safe?
They are a practical option when both the washer manual and the tablet label allow them. Directions differ by brand and model: Whirlpool says to put its tablet at the bottom of the tub, while LG says its tub-cleaning tablets go directly into the drum and recommends the washer’s TUB CLEAN cycle. A Whirlpool manual for one covered model says not to put the tablet in the detergent dispenser. Follow the instructions for your exact washer and product rather than assuming all tablets or machines use the same placement.

- Empty the washer. Remove clothing and other items before starting. affresh’s product directions say to use the tablet monthly or as needed.
- Check the manual and label for placement. Put the tablet where those instructions specify; do not assume it belongs in the detergent drawer.
- Select the recommended cleaning cycle. Use the washer’s dedicated tub-clean cycle if the manual or cleaner label directs you to. If your machine has no such cycle, use the manual and label rather than guessing at a substitute setting.
- Deal with any residue as directed. affresh says to wipe away residual tablet after the cycle. Whirlpool says an additional rinse and spin may clear excess cleanser.
How household cleaners compare

What a tub-clean cycle does not clean
A tablet cycle does not replace wiping residue-prone surfaces. Whirlpool advises cleaning the dispenser drawer, door seal, and interior surfaces, then leaving the door or lid open so the washer can dry. LG’s monthly-maintenance overview also names the drain pump filter, dispenser, inlet filters, and door gaskets. Check your model manual before removing or cleaning filters.

LG’s support page, dated 09/10/2026, says: “For the best results, LG recommends using a washing machine tub cleaner and following the instructions on the package:” That recommendation applies to LG’s guidance; your own washer’s manual remains the relevant authority for your model.
