Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If you see an account, charge, withdrawal or government notice you did not authorize, treat it as identity theft until you can verify otherwise. In the first 24 hours, contain the known fraud, preserve evidence, alert the credit bureaus, check all three credit reports and file an FTC report. A police report and a credit freeze can follow when they fit the situation. This checklist is for U.S. consumers.
First, contain the account or transaction you know about
Call every company where you see or suspect fraud and ask for its fraud department. Tell the representative that you believe your identity or account was used without authorization. Ask the company to close or freeze the affected account so additional charges cannot be added without your agreement. Change the account login, password and PIN immediately. Change any other account that reused the same password or PIN, and use new credentials that are not shared across services.

Ask for a case number, the account status, the representative’s name and the company’s next step. Do not assume that closing one account protects other accounts; repeat the process anywhere else you find suspicious activity.
Preserve evidence before deleting or shredding anything
Save statements, emails, text messages, screenshots, transaction IDs, shipping details and notices. Keep a dated incident log. For each call or online report, record:

- The company, representative and case number
- Which account or transaction was involved
- What the company closed, froze or promised to do
- What documents you sent and when
- The date of any promised follow-up
Keep originals or secure scans. Evidence may be needed for a billing dispute, creditor request, police report or FTC Identity Theft Report. After documents are no longer needed, use a cross-cut paper shredder for sensitive receipts, applications and copies; the Federal Trade Commission advises shredding such papers.
Place a fraud alert with one credit bureau
A fraud alert is free and initially lasts one year. Contact any one of Equifax, Experian or TransUnion; the bureau you contact must notify the other two. The alert tells businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit in your name. You do not need to contact all three to start the initial alert.
If you have a confirmed identity-theft incident and an FTC Identity Theft Report or other qualifying documentation, you may request a free seven-year extended fraud alert. Keep the confirmation for your records and note its expiration date.

Decide whether to place a credit freeze
A credit freeze, also called a security freeze, restricts access to your credit file for most new-credit checks. It is free to place and lift, and it remains until you remove it. Because a freeze is bureau-specific, you must place it separately with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. When you later apply for credit, you can temporarily lift the freeze or remove it, then restore it afterward.
| Protection | What it does | Duration | Where you act |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fraud alert | Asks businesses to verify your identity before issuing new credit | One year initially; seven years for an eligible confirmed victim | One bureau notifies the other two for the initial alert |
| Credit freeze | Blocks access to the credit file for most new-credit checks, making fraudulent new accounts less likely | Until you lift or remove it | Set up separately at all three nationwide bureaus |
A fraud alert is useful when you want verification at applications without managing three freezes. A freeze is broader for new-account fraud but can require a lift when you legitimately seek credit. Neither measure closes an already compromised bank, card, utility or online account; handle those accounts directly.

When to call police—and what to bring
Contact local law enforcement when a report would help a creditor, lender, landlord, employer or other institution process your dispute, or when the circumstances involve a crime that needs investigation. Calling the bank or affected company comes first for stopping ongoing transactions; a police report is supporting documentation, not a substitute for account containment.
Bring your FTC Identity Theft Report, government photo ID, proof of address and the evidence you preserved. Ask for a copy of the completed report and keep the report number in your incident log. Some institutions may request a specific report format or additional documents.

Use the specialized path for government and sensitive records
IRS or Social Security number misuse
If an IRS notice says someone used your Social Security number to claim a refund, follow the instructions in that notice and use the FTC recovery plan. Do not respond through a phone number or web address supplied in an unsolicited message; type the official agency address yourself.

Medical, child, employment or benefits identity theft
IdentityTheft.gov provides specialized recovery steps for medical records, a child’s identity, employment-related misuse and benefits fraud. The records and agencies involved differ from ordinary credit-card fraud, so follow the relevant path instead of treating every case as a credit dispute.
Look for signs that the theft is wider than the first incident
Review bank statements and bills for withdrawals or charges you did not make. Check for unfamiliar credit-report accounts, inquiries, balances, addresses or collections. Unexpected calls from debt collectors, changes to government benefits or mail you did not request are also warning signs. Add each discovery to the same log and repeat the containment, evidence and dispute steps for the affected organization.
Security rules for the first day
- Type IdentityTheft.gov and AnnualCreditReport.com directly into the browser; avoid links in suspicious emails or texts.
- Use a unique password and PIN for every affected account, and change credentials that were reused elsewhere.
- Keep copies of every submission and confirmation before closing a browser tab.
- Do not pay a company merely to place a fraud alert or freeze; those actions are free through the bureaus.
Are paid monitoring or recovery services necessary?
The FTC lists credit monitoring, identity monitoring, identity recovery services and identity-theft insurance as optional categories. They do not replace contacting affected companies, placing a fraud alert or freeze, obtaining all three credit reports or filing an FTC report. No single official statistic establishes a specific dollar saving or recovery time from acting within exactly 24 hours, so judge these services by the features and cost you can verify rather than by promises of guaranteed prevention.
What the first 24 hours should leave you with
By the end of the day, you should have stopped or frozen known fraudulent accounts, changed reused credentials, preserved a dated evidence file, placed an alert, reviewed all three credit reports and saved an FTC recovery plan. Add a freeze when new-credit applications are a concern, and obtain a police report when an institution or the circumstances make it useful. Continue checking statements, mail and reports after the initial response; identity theft recovery is a series of documented follow-ups, not a single call.
