What did the Year 1 reveal actually promise?
Sony’s February 12, 2026 announcement said the Year 1 Characters & Stage Pass would add four characters and one new stage. The announcement listed the pass as part of the Digital Deluxe Edition, alongside Standard and Ultimate editions. The official FAQ adds that the pass also includes battle-result poses for the 20-character base roster.

On July 23, 2026, Arc System Works producer Takeshi Yamanaka identified Phoenix Cyclops as the first Year 1 addition and said the team planned post-launch updates, including characters and stages. The sources available here do not confirm the complete character lineup or the timing of the remaining releases.
A Reddit thread dated October 11 reports Phoenix Cyclops, Thor (Jane Foster), Venom and Jubilee as the four characters. That list remains community-reported rather than confirmed by the primary announcements cited here. The same thread contains differing preferences: some commenters welcome particular picks, while others would rather see different characters. Those comments show a range of reactions, not a representative measure of the player base.

Why might the reveal feel underwhelming?
The character picks are subjective
A reveal can disappoint fans who hoped for different characters or a broader spread of Marvel favorites. But the reported roster is not confirmed in the primary sources cited here, and the Reddit discussion cannot establish how widely any preference is shared. Without representative polling, it is more accurate to describe the reaction as mixed in the sampled discussion than to call it a general backlash.
Four characters and one stage set a finite scope
The announced pass has a defined scope: four additional characters and one stage. Players expecting a larger or more frequent stream of additions may see that as modest. Whether it is good value depends on more than the character count: the actual picks, release timing and what else players value in the pass all matter.

The schedule is still a key unknown
Phoenix Cyclops is confirmed as the first addition, but the sources cited here do not establish the schedule for the other characters or stage. A four-character pass released at a satisfying pace could land differently from the same content delivered with long gaps. Without a confirmed cadence, the reveal does not settle that question.

Not on the evidence available. A limited or divisive DLC reveal could affect expectations, but it does not by itself show that players are leaving, that the game is unprofitable or that support will stop. Those conclusions would require better evidence, such as comparable sales across platforms, player-retention trends or an official statement about future support.

GamesRadar reported two early estimates that should not be treated as directly comparable. It cited a Famitsu estimate of 2,814 physical PS5 copies sold in Japan during the first week, and an Alinea Analytics estimate of 485,000 copies sold globally across Steam and PS5 during that week. The first is a Japan-only physical PS5 figure; the second covers estimated global sales across two platforms. Neither figure establishes ongoing engagement, profitability or the game’s long-term prospects.
The concrete support commitment in the cited official material is the four-character, one-stage Year 1 pass, with Phoenix Cyclops named as its first character. The absence of a confirmed schedule for the other content is a limitation on what can be judged now—not evidence that the content will not arrive.

What the edition details mean for the pass
At announcement, Sony listed the US MSRP as $59.99 for Standard and $84.99 for Digital Deluxe. Those are dated announcement prices, not confirmation of current pricing. The Digital Deluxe Edition includes the Year 1 Characters & Stage Pass; the physical PS5 Standard Edition does not include it. The official FAQ says Standard buyers can purchase an upgrade to Digital Deluxe or Ultimate content through PlayStation Store. Check the current listing before buying, since prices and availability can change.
