Warning signs a child is being groomed online

Online grooming is a pattern in which someone builds trust or emotional closeness with a child and then uses that relationship to move toward sexual harm, exploitation, coercion or another harmful act. Warning signs are clues for a calm, supportive conversation—not a diagnostic test. The most concerning pattern combines secrecy, rapidly escalating intimacy, sexualized requests, isolation, pressure or threats, especially when the child’s wellbeing or relationships also change.

What online grooming is and where it happens

Grooming is manipulation. An abuser may present as a stranger, a supposed peer, a romantic interest or someone the child already knows. The goal is to make the child more willing to respond to requests that can lead to sexual harm. Contact can begin in a multiplayer game, social network, messaging service, livestream, group chat or video call, then move between several services. No single app or platform contains the entire risk.

A profile photo, claimed age, friendly tone, mutual contacts or shared interests do not prove that contact is safe. Abusers can use deceptive profiles and cultivate apparent connections. A person may also tell inconsistent stories, appear unexpectedly through multiple accounts or communicate in a way that does not match the identity they claim.

What are some signs of online grooming?

The following patterns are more meaningful than any isolated message or mood change. They are grouped by the stage or tactic they may represent.

Pattern What a child or caregiver might notice Why it matters
Rapid intimacy Unusually intense attention, repeated compliments, romantic language or comments about appearance and body soon after contact begins. Fast closeness can create dependence before the child has had time to assess the person.
Personal probing Questions about the child’s location, routines, device users, family, school or whether anyone can see the screen. These details can help someone monitor access, identify privacy gaps or plan further contact.
Secrecy and channel changes Requests to hide the relationship, leave a public forum, use private messages or video calls, or continue across several accounts. Isolation makes it harder for supportive adults or friends to notice what is happening.
Gifts, favours or money Offers of digital items, gifts, cash, help or special treatment followed by a request or a sense that the child owes something. Indebtedness can be used to weaken a child’s ability to refuse.
Sexual escalation Sexual jokes, role-play, body comments, sexual messages or images, requests for sexual pictures, or pressure for a sexual live chat. Introducing sexual content and testing reactions can precede exploitation.
Isolation, coercion and threats Disparaging trusted adults, making disclosure feel dangerous, demanding compliance, threatening exposure or harm, or pushing for an in-person meeting. Fear and loss of support are common ways to control a child.

Fast, intense connection

An online contact may flood a child with attention, praise or romantic language and quickly claim that the relationship is unique. Compliments focused on the child’s body or appearance can be part of that escalation. The concern is not ordinary friendliness; it is the speed, intensity and pressure to treat a new contact as a deeply trusted person.

Questions that map the child’s privacy

Be alert when someone repeatedly asks where the child is, who is nearby, who else uses the device, whether a parent can see the screen or when the child is alone. Looking up public information about the child can accompany these questions. Such probing may be an attempt to find private access or identify the safest time to make a request.

Secrecy and movement into private spaces

“Don’t tell your family,” “this is just between us” or pressure to leave a moderated group for private messages are important cues. Moving to private video calls, disappearing messages or a sequence of different accounts can remove witnesses and make the interaction harder to report. A request for secrecy is especially concerning when it is paired with gifts, romance or sexual content.

Gifts, favours and money

Grooming can involve game credits, presents, money, practical help or promises of opportunities. The offer may appear generous and harmless at first, then become a reason the child feels obligated to reply, keep a secret or comply with a later demand. Ask about unexpected belongings or money without accusing the child of doing anything wrong.

Sexual talk, images and live requests

A person may introduce sexual subjects gradually, use sexual role-play, comment on the child’s body, send sexual messages or images, or ask the child to send images or appear sexually on a live call. Requests can be framed as proof of love, a joke, a secret or a trade. Any sexual request directed at a child is a reason to seek help; the child is not responsible for the other person’s conduct.

Isolation, pressure, threats and meeting demands

Control may become explicit. The person can undermine the child’s trust in parents or friends, insist that disclosure will cause punishment, threaten to share messages or images, threaten harm, or demand an in-person meeting. Pressure can also be subtle: repeated requests after a refusal, guilt, countdowns or claims that the child will lose the relationship unless they comply.

Changes in a child’s behaviour or wellbeing

Caregivers may notice withdrawal, anxiety, sadness, fear of talking, secrecy around a device, changed interactions with friends or family, unexplained money or belongings, or a sudden change in behaviour. These signs have many possible causes, including ordinary stress, conflict, bullying or mental-health difficulties. They become more important when they appear alongside the contact patterns above. Treat them as a reason to check in, not as proof that grooming has occurred.

Why one sign is not a verdict

Children differ in how they communicate and may hide contact because they feel ashamed, frightened or worried that an adult will remove their device or blame them. A single compliment, private message or mood change cannot establish what is happening. Look for a pattern and ask what the child experienced. Avoid interrogating them for a confession or demanding an immediate explanation.

The apparent age of an online contact is not a safety test. A person may claim to be a teenager, use a peer’s photograph or point to mutual contacts. Inconsistent details, unexpected contact from new accounts and a mismatch between the claimed identity and communication style justify caution without requiring the child to prove who is behind the account.

How to talk with a child who may be at risk

  1. Choose a calm, private moment. Put away distractions and avoid starting the conversation while angry about screen use.
  2. Use open questions. Try “How are things going with the people you talk to online?” or “Has anyone asked you to keep a conversation secret or made you uncomfortable?”
  3. Listen before solving. Let the child describe what happened in their own words. Do not blame them for replying, accepting a gift or sending something under pressure.
  4. Reassure them. Say clearly that grooming is never the child’s fault, that they are not in trouble for asking for help and that you will work with them to stay safe.
  5. Ask about immediate safety. Find out whether the person is threatening them, knows where they are, has requested a meeting or can reach them through another account.
  6. Agree on the next step. Explain what you will do together before changing accounts or devices, unless urgent danger requires immediate action.

Julie Inman Grant, eSafety Commissioner, advises: Talk to your child about the signs that show an online friendship isn’t safe. The statement appears in eSafety’s caregiver guidance, published 2 September 2019: Helping your child deal with unwanted contact online.

What to do after a disclosure

Stop unsafe contact where practical

Work with the child to stop replying, block the account and tighten privacy settings. If the person is contacting the child through several services, check each account rather than assuming one block ends the contact. Do not confront the suspected abuser directly; that can increase pressure or destroy information useful to a report.

Preserve useful information safely

Record usernames, profile links, dates, times, messages and the services used. Keep evidence private and do not forward sexual images or messages to friends. If an image involves a child, ask the reporting service or a qualified professional how to preserve and submit evidence lawfully.

Report through the right channels

Use the platform’s reporting function and contact the official child-safety, child-protection or law-enforcement service for your country. Reporting routes and laws differ by jurisdiction, so use local government or recognized child-protection guidance rather than relying on a universal number. A school safeguarding lead, pediatrician, counselor or specialist child-advocacy service can help coordinate support.

Act immediately when danger is imminent

If a meeting is planned, the person knows the child’s location, threats are being made or the child may be in immediate physical danger, contact local emergency services. Keep the child with a trusted adult and do not send them to meet the contact.

How common is online grooming?

One figure cited by the eSafety Commissioner comes from the Australian Child Maltreatment Study conducted in 2024: one in four girls had been groomed by an adult. This is an Australian study finding about that population and definition; it is not a global rate, a rate for all children or a measure of every form of online grooming. The reviewed authorities do not provide a comparable worldwide prevalence figure, so differently defined surveys should not be combined into one statistic.

Supporting a child after the immediate risk

Continue checking in without making every conversation about surveillance. Help the child rebuild contact with trusted friends and adults, and ask what would make online spaces feel safer. A counselor or child-advocacy professional can help with fear, shame, sleep problems, anxiety or family conflict. Keep safety rules clear—such as not meeting an online contact alone and telling an adult about secret or sexual requests—while making it equally clear that seeking help will not lead to punishment.

Grooming is a tactic used by another person; responsibility rests with that person, not with the child who was targeted. Calm listening, pattern recognition, prompt reporting and local professional support give a child the best chance of safety.
