Creating a convincing 3D fan-art Tempestus Scion is less about adding maximum detail and more about solving the right problems in order. Start by checking the lore and silhouette, block the large forms in Blender, sculpt material distinctions in ZBrush, reserve flexible wear for Substance 3D Painter, and validate every mesh before baking. This workflow follows 3D character artist Hakan Kamar’s documented process for an original Imperial soldier interpretation published in an 80 Level interview on 9 October 2026. The result is fan art based on the Warhammer 40,000 setting, not an official Games Workshop asset.
What makes an Imperial soldier fan-art project convincing?
A recognisable Tempestus Scion has to pass two tests at once. The first is visual: the character must read clearly at the intended camera distance, with a strong silhouette and believable armor construction. The second is contextual: equipment and proportions should make sense inside the setting. Kamar used lore research as a design check rather than as decoration. His target features included Hot-shot Lasguns, Hellpistols, Carapace Armour and Omnishield Helms.

Use a concept image to establish composition, stance and broad shape, but do not treat one image as the only authority. Check several references for the relative size of the helmet, shoulder armor, weapon, backpack, gloves and boots. This prevents a design that looks attractive in isolation but no longer reads as the specialist Imperial soldier it is meant to represent.

The project is an original digital interpretation owned by its creator. It is not a Games Workshop production, licensed model or official game asset. That distinction matters when you publish images, distribute files or discuss commercial use.

Choose the pipeline before you detail anything
Different applications solve different parts of the job. Kamar’s choices are an individual professional workflow, not a controlled performance comparison, but they provide a practical division of labor.
| Stage | Documented tool | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Blockout and assembly | Blender | Fast box modeling, scene assembly, lighting checks and material integration |
| Cloth | Marvelous Designer | Creates garments that can be returned to Blender for assembly |
| High-poly sculpt | ZBrush | Expressive forms and surface cues that distinguish hard and soft metals |
| Retopology and UVs | Maya and RizomUV | Maya for straightforward UV work; RizomUV for many texture sets or UDIMs |
| Baking | Marmoset Toolbag | Separate bake groups and a broad set of diagnostic maps |
| Texturing | Substance 3D Painter | Layered color, height and controllable wear masks |
| Hair | Maya/XGen | Hair cap and limited cards for brows and lashes |
| Posing | Blender Auto-Rig Pro | Still-image posing |
| Real-time presentation | Unreal Engine 5 | Scenes, turntables, animation tests and physics checks |
| Technical and high-poly renders | Marmoset Toolbag; Maya/Arnold | Technical previews in Marmoset and high-poly output in Arnold |
Software versions, subscription prices and plugin compatibility change over time, and the interview reports no render-time or performance benchmark. Choose alternatives when they better match your own hardware, license situation or delivery target.
Step 1: Turn lore into a design checklist
- Write down the non-negotiable identifiers. List the weapons, armor class, helmet style and any unit-specific accessories that must survive the final image.
- Separate identity from surface decoration. A Hot-shot Lasgun, Carapace Armour and Omnishield Helm define the character more strongly than scratches or tiny bolts.
- Collect orthographic and functional references. Look for front, side and rear information, and note how straps, pouches, cables and weapon attachments connect.
- Mark camera-critical features. If the final render is a portrait, prioritize the helm, face opening, chest armor and weapon. If it is a full-body turntable, include boots, knees and the rear equipment layout.
Keep the checklist visible while modeling. It gives you objective checks when a blockout becomes visually appealing but drifts away from the intended unit.

Begin with simple boxes, cylinders and planes. The goal is not a finished mesh; it is a reliable answer to where the large shapes sit and how the body balances under armor. Establish the head, rib cage, pelvis, limbs, shoulder width, weapon length and backpack volume before adding panel seams.
Kamar keeps making large changes until major errors disappear, then refines smaller elements. Use the same discipline. View the model in a flat clay material, from the final camera and from a neutral three-quarter view. Check whether the helmet is too large, whether the weapon overwhelms the torso, and whether the shoulder plates interrupt the arm’s range of motion.
Blender also acts as the assembly hub. Bring in garments from Marvelous Designer and decimated ZBrush meshes, then test rough lighting and material separation in the same scene. Early lighting reveals proportion problems that a sculpting viewport can hide.
Step 3: Build a high-poly sculpt that explains materials
Once the blockout works, refine the high-poly version in ZBrush. The useful target is not uniform smoothness; it is readable material behavior. Kamar wanted hard metal and softer metal to look different even before textures were applied. A rigid plate should carry controlled planes, edge compression and sharper transitions, while a softer component can show broader dents, stretched folds or less exact edges.

Brush choices for armor definition
- hPolish: Clarifies planes and gives armor a manufactured, flattened quality.
- Dam Standard: Cuts seams, panel breaks and narrow damage lines.
- Standard: Builds and refines forms where broader control is needed.
Use these brushes to describe construction: where one plate overlaps another, where a fastener compresses a panel, and where a cable enters a housing. Do not rely on random noise to imply detail. A surface that is mechanically legible will bake and light more convincingly.
Step 4: Decide what belongs in the sculpt and what belongs in textures
Keep forms that change the silhouette or cast a meaningful shadow in the high-poly mesh. Move fine paint chips, shallow pitting and much of the armor damage into Substance 3D Painter height and texture layers. Kamar uses this split because Painter-based wear is easier to revise for a real-time asset than sculpting every mark into geometry.
A practical rule is to model depth that must exist from every angle, sculpt medium forms that affect highlights, and texture details that depend on the shot. Reassess at the smallest delivery resolution. If a mark disappears in the final camera, it does not deserve expensive geometry.
Step 5: Retopologize in separate, manageable assets
Retopology is easier to control when the character is divided into logical pieces: body, armor plates, helmet, weapons, pouches, cables and cloth. Separate assets let you rebake one problem area without invalidating the entire character and make material assignments clearer.
Before baking, run a validation pass:
- Remove double vertices and accidental internal faces.
- Check normals and correct flipped shells.
- Find non-manifold edges, open borders and hidden self-intersections.
- Confirm smoothing groups or equivalent hard-edge rules.
- Triangulate deliberately and inspect the triangulated result, especially around armor corners and weapon silhouettes.
- Verify that the low-poly mesh encloses the intended high-poly projection without exploding cages.
Fixing these issues before a bake is faster than trying to paint around wavering normals, gradients or missing details later.
Step 6: Unwrap for the project’s texture complexity
Kamar preferred Maya for straightforward UV work and RizomUV when a project contained many texture sets or UDIM tiles. That is an artist preference rather than a universal ranking. Use the simplest tool that gives you clean shells, sensible texel density and enough space for the camera-critical parts.
Place seams where armor breaks naturally, hide them on undersides and keep long, visible panels as straight as practical. Give the face, helmet markings, weapon receiver and front chest plates more resolution than concealed interior surfaces. If the asset needs UDIMs, label tiles and material groups before baking so the naming remains stable through texturing and export.

Step 7: Bake organized maps in Marmoset Toolbag
Set up separate bake groups for independent assets. A helmet, lasgun and chest plate should not unintentionally project detail onto one another. Kamar’s listed output includes tangent-space normal, curvature, ambient occlusion at close and far distances, world-space normal, vertex-color or ID, convex and concave maps.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallUse the maps diagnostically as well as artistically. Tangent normals carry sculpted form, curvature helps identify edges, close and far AO provide different contact scales, world-space normals support directional masks, and ID colors make material selection predictable. Convex and concave information can separate exposed edges from recesses when building wear generators.
Step 8: Texture from broad color blocks to controlled wear
In Substance 3D Painter, establish the large color families first: armor paint, bare or dark metal, cloth, rubber, leather, lenses and weapon components. Confirm that the character reads at a distance before adding damage. Then work across materials to introduce rust, edge wear, grime and controlled variation.
A repeatable paint-wear mask
- Create a curvature-and-noise mask so wear follows both geometry and irregular variation.
- Use a Levels adjustment to tighten the mask and produce a crisper break between intact paint and exposed material.
- Reduce opacity or alter roughness so every edge is not equally bright or equally damaged.
- Inspect the result under neutral light and in the final real-time scene.
Keep the wear subordinate to the forms. A perfectly uniform chipped-edge treatment makes every plate look procedurally identical; varied scale, direction and density make the armor feel handled rather than decorated.
Step 9: Groom only the hair the camera can see
For a military buzz cut, Kamar uses a Maya/XGen hair cap and limits hair cards mainly to eyebrows and eyelashes. The helmet or balaclava hides most of the scalp, so building a full hairstyle would consume production time without improving the shot.
Match grooming effort to visibility. A close facial portrait may need brows, lashes and a clean hairline; a helmeted full-body turntable usually needs only the visible edges. Test the cap under the same lighting and exposure used for the final render because dark hair can disappear into a helmet shadow.
Step 10: Rig, pose and test moving parts
Blender Auto-Rig Pro is used for still poses. Keep the pose functional: armor should allow believable elbow and shoulder movement, the weapon should sit naturally in the hands, and straps should not pass through plates.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For Unreal Engine 5 tests, Kamar uses a separate rig with physics assets and a gun cable. Physics spheres placed along the cable bones provide collision points for the simulated line. Treat this as a presentation test rather than proof that the still-image rig is production-ready for every animation. Check joints, cable anchors and weapon constraints in motion before committing to a shot.
Step 11: Render according to the deliverable
| Deliverable | Preferred environment in the documented workflow | Useful check |
|---|---|---|
| Main scene and real-time look | Unreal Engine 5 | Material response, lighting, camera distance and frame rate |
| Character turntable, gun renders and animation tests | Unreal Engine 5 | Silhouette consistency and moving-part behavior |
| Technical renders | Marmoset Toolbag | Bake quality, normals and material separation |
| High-poly presentation | Maya/Arnold | Sculpt quality and close-up surface response |
Use Unreal’s Movie Render Queue for queued output. For a portfolio presentation, Kamar prefers an eight-image turntable with 45-degree increments over a continuously spinning clip. The stepped views make it easier to inspect the front, sides, rear and three-quarter transitions without motion blur hiding construction flaws.
How to choose a simpler or more elaborate workflow
- Still portrait: Spend the most time on face, helm, chest armor and the camera-facing weapon. A full animation rig and exhaustive hidden geometry are unnecessary.
- Eight-view turntable: Build every visible side, validate seams and cable routing, and give rear equipment enough texture resolution.
- Animation test: Prioritize clean deformation, collision bodies, weapon constraints and cable behavior before micro-surface wear.
- Game-ready asset: Push flexible damage into Painter, keep bake groups separate, and validate triangulation and normals at the target engine’s shading settings.
- High-poly art study: Spend more time on ZBrush material cues and Maya/Arnold lighting, while accepting that the mesh may not be optimized for real-time use.
The final camera distance is the deciding constraint. Detail that cannot survive that distance is a poor use of modeling, sculpting or texture time.
Copyright, fan-art publication and commercial boundaries
Games Workshop guidance reproduced by 40k Fan says individuals may create their own artwork, drawings and designs based on its characters and settings, subject to conditions. The guidance states that fan artwork must not copy official artwork or imagery, must be non-commercial, must be clearly unofficial and must not use Games Workshop logos. Games Workshop retains the underlying rights.
Those statements are practical publication guidance, not a substitute for legal advice. Policies and laws can vary by country and can change. Before publishing, label the work as unofficial fan art, avoid logos and copied promotional imagery, and do not imply endorsement or a license.
Practices to avoid
- Do not present the render as an official Games Workshop asset.
- Do not sell copied meshes, scans or digital files derived from a miniature.
- Do not illegally recast, scan or distribute copied designs.
- Do not use a physical miniature as a shortcut to reproduce its geometry. Study armor, equipment and proportions, then create original meshes.
A physical Warhammer 40,000 miniature can be useful as a visual reference for construction and color language. If you also paint miniatures, Games Workshop’s Citadel Colour guidance describes “Battle Ready” as a model with its main areas colored and a simple base finish, using either a Classic Base, Shade and Technical approach or a Contrast and Technical approach. Those painting methods are optional references, not requirements for digital modeling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat to remember from the process
The sequence prevents expensive rework: lore and reference checks establish identity; Blender blockout solves proportion; ZBrush separates material behavior; Painter keeps wear flexible; separate assets and bake groups protect iteration; and each render application serves a defined purpose. Kamar’s own summary is that “The process matters far more than the final piece.” For an Imperial soldier, that means a disciplined chain of checks is more valuable than adding another layer of scratches.

Frequently asked questions
Is this workflow an official Warhammer 40,000 production method?
No. It is a documented individual workflow for an original Tempestus Scion fan-art character. It should not be described as a Games Workshop-approved pipeline.
Do I need every application listed?
No. The applications divide tasks, but a smaller project can remain in Blender with one sculpting, texturing and rendering solution. Add specialized tools when UV complexity, cloth simulation, bake organization or real-time testing justifies them.
Can I sell a render made with this workflow?
The cited Games Workshop guidance says fan artwork must be non-commercial and clearly unofficial. Do not assume that original modeling makes a commercial Warhammer-branded product permissible; obtain qualified legal advice for your jurisdiction and intended use.
