In Owlcat Games’ upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy, you can accuse a suspect after logging even thin evidence, keep investigating in case new clues change your view, or knowingly pin blame on the wrong person or group. The accusation carries authority in the story, but it does not prove you discovered the truth. Owlcat says choices can affect story branches, rewards, NPC attitudes and potentially endings, though the interview does not promise the same consequences in every case.
Can you accuse someone before you have proof?
Yes. In an interview with PC Gamer published October 6, 2026, Owlcat senior narrative designer Veronika Larionova said players may accuse a suspect once evidence against them has been logged—even if the case rests on a hunch. You can stop investigating and make that call, or pursue more evidence that may strengthen the accusation or clear the suspect.

The distinction is between an official verdict and what actually happened. The Inquisition’s chosen verdict is treated as truth in-world; that does not mean the player has uncovered the real culprit. Deliberately blaming an innocent person or group is also possible. Larionova said, “Moments like that will definitely happen.” Whether a false accusation benefits you depends on the case and your choices, not on a guaranteed reward for framing someone.

Early accusation or continued investigation?
| Approach | What it means | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Accuse early | Make a verdict after logging evidence, even if it is thin. | You may act on a hunch, but the interview gives no success rate or assurance that the accusation is factually correct. |
| Investigate further | Gather more clues before deciding. | Additional evidence can add detail or clear a suspect; the interview does not say that every case requires complete evidence. |
Owlcat says consequences may include different story branches, rewards, changes in NPC attitudes and additional endings. These are possibilities, not a promise that each accusation changes all four. The interview does not identify a universally optimal approach.

How investigations work
Owlcat describes a case-solving loop built around crime-scene examination, evidence, deductions, conversations and reconstruction of events. The game uses familiar detective conventions such as clue cards and a detective board, but the narrative and the player’s judgement remain central.
Evidence and deductions
Your acolyte’s detective journal gathers, sorts and stores evidence. Some cases call for a chain of deductions; Larionova also said luck can sometimes help. That is not a guarantee that random guesses will solve every mystery: the world’s and NPCs’ reactions may depend on which evidence you collected.
Devices and companions
A rare device called a Servo-Ossuarium—made up of servo-skull assistants—can track suspicious trails, intercept signals and analyse data. Other inquisitors may share devices. Companions bring their own experience and knowledge: they can help gather evidence in suspect conversations and offer alternative interpretations or solutions. They do not solve mysteries independently, and their suggestions are opinions for you to weigh.
Is this a chance to play like Gregor Eisenhorn?
Eisenhorn is an inspiration, not the character you play. Larionova said Owlcat’s approach leans more toward the classic Dark Heresy tabletop RPG rulebooks, while drawing inspiration from the story of the iconic inquisitor. She also described the CRPG’s roleplaying freedom as a way for fans of the Eisenhorn trilogy to make choices with comparable weight—not as an adaptation of those novels or a promise to reproduce Eisenhorn’s specific decisions.
Rank #3
- Illustations
The contrast is a roleplaying choice, not a test with one right answer. You can try to follow a personal code associated with Eisenhorn, or make decisions shaped by your own convictions or those of your patrons. Larionova put the game’s moral framing this way: “Just remember that there are no right or wrong choices, only choices whose consequences the inhabitants of the Scintilla system will have to live with.”
